My ex once took me to see some small band I can't even remember the name of because it turned out Robert Plant was the opening act. He was secretly opening so he could test out some new material he was working on (Saving Grace) without precolouring people's perceptions, but he was also Robert Plant so he blew the crowd away. I felt genuinely bad that a bunch of young twenty something's had been put in the position of having to follow up on one of the greatest singers of all time. I remember them being fine, I might have enjoyed them in another context, but the contrast in skill and experience was just insurmountable.
What a crazy 24 hours to follow this. I have no interest in any of these artists but respect to all of them for standing up. I only wish everyone would go one step further and refuse to ever play at Krafts Gillette stadium going forward to really stick it to him.

I hate this view, itâs not true, at all. The majority of great musicians are normal people. This is a concept people made up to justify liking shitty people. Iâve personally interacted with a ton of my favorite bands and outside of a few assholes they are all cool normal people. Music is a rational thing, there are formulas for what does and does not work, you donât need to be insane to do cool and innovative shit with music. I'm a massive Nick Cave fan and had to look this up. I found this, which is a pair of letters from him.
It struck me while writing this how much more powerful a statement you could make if you were to go to Israel and tell the press and the Israeli people how you feel about their current regime, then do a concert on the understanding that the purpose of your music was to speak to the Israeli peopleâs better angels. That would have a much greater effect than a boycott.
I dunno. I can see his point but I'm also disappointed? It's definitely not "staunchly pro-Israel". He's just made a decision to play there and is using that to justify it. I don't know if showing up and telling people in person is better than boycotting and showing them what they're missing. If I were in his position I'd boycott.
