Video games and by extension all games are predicated on destruction and not on preservation and rebuild.

I am aware there must be exceptions but they must be incredibly few and far between as I can't name one nor anyone I know.

Even Stardew Valley reaches a point where you need to occupy space with all sort of machines and contraptions in order to win the game, so I can't name it as a candidate.

The easiest argument for this is that such a game would be boring. But unless one gets created, we'll never know.

I have a board game where you have to plant a forest and create the conditions to rebuild the ecosystem, while preventing forest fires. It is complex and requires strategy.

I could see something along the lines like this in a computer game, with added challenges.

In my hobby of writting, I make an effort to insert ideas like this. I'm so tired of enshrined violence and destruction of all kinds.

It's easy to view destruction. Disaster movies make excellent pop corn eating time. But when the monsters get killed or go away, the action ends and heroes won someone has to pick up the pieces. And that is a lot more complex afair.

Skabma: snowfall, Caravan Sandwitch, the longing, powerwash simulator, a short hike, Dredge, in other waters

All of these titles are without destroying nature, and without destruction in general. They also have themes of restoration.

I think you're very wrong about that there's no games that fit, which makes me presume you've got a pretty tight definition on what you want 🤷

You do understand that, in many ecosystems, regular forest fires are actually necessary to maintain the balance among undergrowth, detritus, and overstory, right?

Even in the cosmic sense, entropy is assured by the second law of thermodynamics. All order is temporary order, bought with a net increase in entropy outside the ordered system.

All creation inherently requires destruction of something else. So are you just talking about anthropogenic, unsustainable destruction?

Wasn't that clear?

Not to me, at least. For stardew valley, the farm is about as sustainable as possible. Many of the machines literally work based on the magic of the forest through harmony with nature. You can absolutely run it like a factory farm, but I haven't found the need to do that in order to improve my ability to achieve perfection. I'm almost there, and I still have over half of my four-corners farm covered in the original forest. The only machines I found I really needed were the kegs. I'm very confused by your statement about stardew.

Furthermore, I found your statement about the board game where you prevent forest fires to be the main issue. As I said, human prevention of forest brush fires has caused the fires that do occur to be far more damaging.

I just think that the line between "destruction" and "prevention" is not a clear one here. In order to live sustainably, we must act in equilibrium with the natural state, making minor adjustments to guide the overarching systems toward more mutually-advantageous stable points.

ETA: isn't stardew valley literally about going to a podunk town that's already been taken over by Walmart, with a rundown community center and a disused farm, and kicking Walmart the fuck out by rebuilding community?!

maybe the animal crossing series is an exception..? there's no combat, and the focus is generally on building & developing a community while planting different fruit-trees/flowers/crops

although the latest game could be seen to be a bit coloniser-y, since its aim isn't developing an existing community, but to find an island & create a community there.

but back to your point, i think this is a problem with films & tv too, the ones filled with violence & dystopia seem to get the most funding. i feel like people are less & less able to imagine better worlds, the more they're only fed narratives with violence and dystopia.

so in this political climate, it's more important than ever for creative people to go against the grain & show people that there are different ways of doing things, and that creation is more powerful than destruction. fair play to you for doing so! i hope many more people follow suit 🙌

Well, you can't make an omellete without breaking a few eggs. Look at humanity. For everything we create, something else usually gets destroyed. And guess who makes all the games. Hint: It's not dolphins.

What are your thoughts on Planet Crafter?

It's a player(s) terra-forming a dead world into one that has and can sustain life. No combat, no enemies.

Closer, better, but not exactly.

how else do you think a soft, weak furless species that cant run fast or jump high and has no claws or fangs or armor or poison or camouflage, can barely swim and no extra sense might defend itself?

Nature evolved the ultimate killing machine - human history is a STORY of violence, politics is the projection of violence onto one group, while simultaneously preventing violence being done to another.

Ever played a city building game, like Cities: Skylines?

qyron@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1d

Nope.

It might not be quite what you're talking about but I really enjoyed Ultros. It's mainly a normal metroidvania, but there's an aspect of restoration where you plant trees that will grow in the next time-loop, and you can feed the creatures so they stop being hostile.

Would it make more sense if I was to edit my post and add modern to it?
