Hey Reddit, how's it going? Reddit:

Lol nothing says we are afraid of the working class like banning subreddits on suppressed news they don’t want us to see. I came here bc I got a warning on my account for liking a comment that said “Luigi”. My alt account got banned for sharing the DOGE email list that is public info. Fuck Reddit. I’m done.

Man the censorship is just vile too. It's not like "Oh this incites violence" it's "anything and everything that we and our shareholders don't agree on is gone".

Worst part is if any other countries went after them then they would just restrict it to US news.

formulaBonk@lemm.ee · 66 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Classic capitalist gotcha. Turns out that prioritizing shareholders (a 3rd party leech entity unrelated to the operations or customers) is always going to lead to censorship. Like the generic “shareholder” needs stable status quo to figure out how to exploit the poors in most efficient way and violent revolt doesn’t guarantee a higher than inflation result. Modern capitalism in America is straight up a mental disorder similar to hoarding. You don’t need the money nor the stock but you’re willing to fuck over literally thousands of people for a minor gain. It should be studied … but studying this doesn’t help the bottom line so fuck any progress it’s death and destruction for %% daily return. Fuck all this

NKBTN@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1y

Is it really down to shareholder demand though? I've a suspicion that it goes a bit higher than that.

glepswizardhat@lemmy.world · 50 pts · 1y (3 replies)

They are Streisand effecting the information though because the more they censor, the more people will talk about it. There’s already been a news article published by The Verge. It’s going to backfire so badly lmao.

AloneYogurt@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Seeing that non-right sided medias are picking this up is good. Hopefully it builds more traction and if they can even say something as simple as "Lemmy is an alternative" we can see healthy growth. I know r/conservative is probably loving it but in the last month I've seen them advocate for more violence than any other subreddits. Yet they remain free and open. Gotta love how contradicting reddit has become since the blackout.

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 16 pts · 1y (1 reply)

not contradicting at all if you consider them as part of the putin/musk propaganda apparatus

Ledericas@lemm.ee · 7 pts · 1y

putins trolls control the sub, and the mods. not an accident why they are constantly on the front page all the time. and then theres the subs that "pretend to be both sides"

Reddit has been compromised for a while now. 2016 opened them up. The API fiasco blew the door down. r/place exposed it and exploited Reddit for what it is. And we're now seeing the new course of direction continue.

After 12 years and over 900K Karma, I got permanently banned for repeating an opinion that I've posted many times over the past decade. Then Trump gets elected, and the exact same opinion gets me a permaban.

Now I'm hearing that they are banning people for UPVOTES! I wondered why Reddit had decided to throw in with the Nazis, and I this week I see in the news that Ohanion wants to buy TikTok. The new owner of TikTok will be personally chosen by HitlerPig, so Zuckerfuck has been kissing up, and now Ohanion wants in on it. HitlerPig will award it to whomever kisses his ass and pays him the most.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 62 pts · 1y

Reddit doesn't want users participating in the site. They want eyes looking at ads and that's it. Look, don't touch. We've got bots for touching.

Lurkers are more lucrative than posters.

Cocopanda@lemmy.world · 51 pts · 1y

14 year old account for me. Mod of a million plus sub. 700k karma. Built fucking subreddits into real communities. Banned over a joke I made for a decade. Reddit is dying and we now have a new federated home.

henfredemars@infosec.pub · 33 pts · 1y

That’s the problem with these corporations — the foundation is rotten, and they have no principles beyond more money. It has been this way for some time.

Now, we have an economy where the arbitrary whims of billionaires and our king is the main determinant of their share price. This is how Reddit kisses the boot.

They would exhume my grandmother if it increased share price by one tenth of one percent.

OrloNorppa@sopuli.xyz · 15 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Somehow the complexity of using Lemmy compared to other social media sites and the decentralized nature of it has really gotten rid of the trollfarms and bot spam to a pretty good extent. I realize now that Reddit has such an insane amount of bad-faith actors that cause the site to be so toxic, same with all other mainstream social media.

parmesan@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1y

I saw someone in a reddit thread about Lemmy earlier complaining that it wasn't "user friendly" enough because someone posted an infograph on how the Fediverse works. Even though all the infograph was explaining was that you log into one instance and can freely interact with the rest from there...

I've always thought the internet should be more decentralized and being able to log in without seeing tons of bots, reposts and propaganda is literally the best aspect of Lemmy for me. This feels like what social media was meant to be. I wish there was an easier way to get people to understand that.

henfredemars@infosec.pub · 9 pts · 1y

We definitely have our own bots and spam problems. Instance admins work diligently to keep the situation under control, and so far, they’ve been pretty successful. I’ve seen a few waves of it in my almost 2 years here.

I don’t think there’s a way to make the problem go away completely, but I think this model has proven more resilient so far. I believe in it.

henfredemars@infosec.pub · 16 pts · 1y

I came here with the API changes, but I knew there would be future waves. It’s so nice. I believe in Lemmy and the promise of federated media to help technology work for humans.

SausageWallet@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y

I first joined reddit in 2011 and Lemmy definitely reminds me of early reddit. Except back then I probably lurked for about a year before I even made my first comment or post. I joined Lemmy about a month ago and I'm slowly starting to participate already.

funkmastertech@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 1y

/r/conservative and /r/conspiracy are still open... What a fucking shit-ass website. I don't get why they don't just # rm -rf the whole fucking thing already.

Clearly they're pissed that people are still using the site. They've made efforts to stop it by making shit redesigns, releasing a shitty app, user profiles, shutting off the API and trying to force people to use their shit app.

They must be seething that people are still using it and they've found a new way to try to get people to stop. Of course, they could shut the site down, but these are execs we're talking about - their forté is ignoring every elephant in the room and then creating "solutions" that completely miss the problem.

gamer@lemm.ee · 45 pts · 1y (9 replies)

They're in the business of selling "organic" content to AI companies, but those AI companies don't want advertiser-unfriendly language in their datasets.

brax@sh.itjust.works · 25 pts · 1y (8 replies)

Advertisors are dumb as fuck. Like, clearly if their datasets contain language that is not "advertisor friendly" then who the fuck are they trying to advertise to?

"Wow, all of society is doing this stuff. But this isn't very friendly. The people doing that stuff certainly wouldn't like if we advertised the stuff they're doing!"

Zahille7@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 1y (7 replies)

I honestly think it's some weird plot to take humanity back to a puritanical society.

Think about it.

All major websites are censoring language and content that could even remotely be construed as adult-friendly or "harmful"; the fact so many US states are outright banning porn sites (I know it's like a hydra, but the point still stands); the entire world is sliding right back into fascism; I even feel like Hollywood is stepping away from things like violence and vulgarity.

It's all a fucking sham and I fucking hate it. Let us swear; let us jack off to the weird shit we want to jack off too; just let people be people.

Why does there have to be a small but extremely powerful subset of people who can run the entire world and dictate what the rest of us can and can't do?

b_tr3e@feddit.org · 10 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I honestly think it’s some weird plot to take humanity back to a puritanical society.

When would that have been? Humanity never was puritan and it never will be. The UK were and some hicks in their former colonies think they still are but humanity or civilisation are not limited to the area between Texas and Alaska. Actually It has barely arrived there.

KillerSpacePotatoes@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

They have some warped idea of what the past was like and want to drag us back to a time that never was. A time when you couldn't even show married couples in the same bed on TV.

fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 1y

We have to be the counterculture to overtake and replace the rotten mainstream. No compromise

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

The thing about the puritans were that they had harsh rules that existed to try to keep their flock from sinning. They failed as such things always fail.
A good example of a common practice from the time was that part of the pay of a young man working on another mans farm was the bed of their eldest daughter at night. It made identifying the father of the child easier.

This one practice alone made the puritans a lot more rational than this current cancer on society.

I think maybe the problem is that places like Reddit were essentially a “third place.” It just happens to be a virtual one. You can’t monetize a place, unless you also provide a good or a service. a restaurant at least provides food and drinks. bowling alleys provide games and food and drink. What does reddit provide aside from the place? Other than annoyances such as Ads, 1984 level moderation, etc.

brax@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Well, they used to provide a convenient way to find information on niche shit.

But they've done all they can to make sure that all they are now is just some place.

ghostrider2112@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

They didn’t do shit. Our words, and google did that. lol Edit: sorry, I didn’t mean that to sound as harsh as it might.

Aksumite@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (6 replies)

Attention Extraction modeling. Thats how social media platforms monetize. I started working what the same kind of technologies but it was to predict how clients should customize their products to tailor behavior input. These corpations trade in behavior modifaction and RTD auction with political clients. A good example when it goes wrong is the Myanmar /Facebook masssacre.

ghostrider2112@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (5 replies)

Yes, that provides some value. But, not to the people that use it. That actually provides extreme evidence on why not to use it.

Aksumite@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Agree. You wont find any one working in the tech industry that allows their family or friends use social media platforms. You will find that almost every day to day apps, (linkedin, whatsapp, instagram, Facebook, snapchat, reddit, pinterest, etcetera), contributes to the polarization that we see more and more of today. Some of these work together but often it is a big competition of who can get your attention. And their are addictive. Alternatives would have to be completly opposite and decentralized....unfortunely we will be stuck with these for a real long time.

ghostrider2112@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

lol..yup. we also highly discourage it in cybersecurity.

Basically every region of the world you will find division among the populations due to different perceptions of reality. For instance, when you search for the same keywords as me, we will get different either suggestions in the auto complete or different search results, even though we both could be in the same city. You can see this patterns where ever they are allowed, (China for instance banned many of them because of this), its called microtargeting.

Reddit may actually be doing a lot of people a big favor.

Today Trump's DHS went out and arrested a Palestinian student at Columbia for participating at a protest a year prior. Our federal agents are becoming like the KGB- hunting down political dissidents.

I believe that is just a start. I think people would be wise to be careful about the things they post online. If you do post content you believe the administration may not like, I suggest making an anonymous account with an email not linked to your personal name.

I have a hunch that people will be arrested in the near future for posting things online.

krashmo@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 1y (2 replies)

That may be true. Still, don't let them make you afraid. That's the goal. They can't arrest all of us.

LOL no they are not. 97% of the users don't give a fuck about any of this and will never leave. Reddit can ride it out just fine. For example, look at the cesspool FB turned into.

Reddit doesn't have the internet infrastructure FB has where they were able to monopolise the internet of whole countries in certain parts of the world.

And the wider they cast this dragnet the more users will be caught up in it, the more will slowly leave, the less content will be created, the worse the platform will get.

I think for the future of reddit you only need to look at digg.

Ledericas@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

they are allowing open AI and google to scrape reddits data for themselves, and google is giving them some privileges, and i assume REDDITS AI monitoring system for banning is using google or open AIs tech.

other_cat@lemmy.zip · 14 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Yep, users and communities can shift away to a new instance if they want. While the fact that there might be 3+ communities on different instances all covering the same topic is a weak point, it's also a strength in this regard, so it kind of evens out. And if you really want to, you can make your own instance.

moakley@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

You don't consume one bean at a time though. The existence of a lazy or boring post doesn't ruin the good posts next to it. You can't scroll through the beans from the crappy batch to only eat the good ones.

Besides, that's still a solvable problem. I'm talking about a front-end solution, something that could be customized. Like a multi-reddit on reddit, but easily shareable like a starter pack on Bluesky. And if the multi-pack isn't to your liking, you just edit it for yourself.

I attempted to post an original comic on Lemmy to what is basically the only comic strip sub. It was probably the only comic that had been posted that week that wasn't on reddit first. It got removed for profanity. The profanity in question? "Balls".

I posted it to reddit after that, and it hit the front page of r/all. Not to toot my own horn, but that's some good fucking original content that the comic strip sub on Lemmy could have used.

Syrc@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

That does suck, it's kinda sad that the most popular Comic-oriented community is that uptight about profanity.

Although, if that happens again I suggest trying on a different community, even if it's not fully comic-oriented or if it's smaller (c/comics@programming.dev for example, it's mostly inactive but it's not uncommon at all for posts from near-dead communities to gain traction anyway).

I love how in r/conservative and r/antiSemitismInReddit (Ignore the name, they mean anti-neozionists and are willing to shame Jews who protest against Israels actions as well, they even have a tag for them), they always complain about reddit being biased against them when it is quite the opposite. Take Jibrish, bringing his Eve Online gaslighting and trolling from the r/eve community to the r/conservative community, also running around shamelessly in r/RedditSafety. Reddit is effectively Silicon Valley psyop, meant to gather data and keep an eye on the tendency of the more educated lot on the Internet (as well as keep them in pro-neozionist bubbles by pushing them in major subreddits like r/worldnews).

Hell, read or search about maxwellhill on YouTube. Some have taken that the fact that the account has logged in for private chats as having disproved that claim when all it proves is that someone, albeit lawyer, family member, or otherwise, has logged into the account. What can't be disputed as a conspiracy theory and can be easily confirmed is that Ellen Pao, former Reddit CEO, revealed Ghislaine Maxwell who along with Epstein essentially ran that, a Silicon Valley psyops, was present at the same Silicon Valley Christmas celebrations as her and other influentials. This is the level of manipulation, where there is money there will be a will to manipulate.

Reddit has absolutely no problem complying or letting US federal authorities and intelligence agencies access to all of the information they gather on your account on their backend. There used to be subreddits where you could report moderators, "karmawhores", who trolled and abused their power. They were banned from the platform even after complying far more than other subreddits that got to remain. Forget pointing out the genocide of Palestinians, there was a time where you would even get banned from worldnews for calling cryptoscams confidence games. After Trump's first term and the T_D disaster, the conversation seemed to shift from that failed insurgency (at the time) to a reddit spearled meme stock economic destabilization attempts. Reddit is subjecting yourself to be manipulated for the opportunity to participate in some communities, and they know it.

I've stopped fighting for my shadow-banned account on Reddit. It's a month old now, they've been ignoring it. And for weeks I've only checked reddit but never bothered logging in and never bother trying to fight anymore. I've been on Reddit as far back as, I want to say, 2012? And I've been banned over 30+ times under many alts, getting into fights with some of the dumbest fuckers on Reddit possible. But there also were times where I had tried partaking in positive manners, but the Reddit ecosystem just wasn't having it with people like that.

I've been seeing so many honest people make innocent posts and just getting fucked with. And those people are finding themselves banned as well, not just me. So it's just simply not worth it anymore trying with a system like that, that's been building itself into it's own authoritarian atmosphere.

Don’t worry, they’ll be on the chopping block. But the good thing is the group is everywhere. They are on Substack, as well as here on this app. But they are a very small group, and they are aware that they’ll be next so they posted on Reddit to everyone that they exist on Lemmy which is how I got introduced to this app.

Ledericas@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

they are probably flagged, on thin ice. but conservative probably wont even touch the sub, because the cons will just flood other subs and cry about it.

xye@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y (9 replies)

Why would they? Ineffectual protests with disparate, unclear goals. More useful to keep them so there’s at least a harmless resistance to redirect energy toward.

aceshigh@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 1y (8 replies)

What do you mean? Their goals are clear.

xye@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y (7 replies)

I couldn’t find that immediately on their site but Wikipedia told me it’s:

Which imo is an unrealistic bucket of goals, not a unified call to action

krashmo@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1y (2 replies)

They may be unrealistic but that says more about this administration than it does about the protests. That's pretty basic shit imo

xye@lemm.ee · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Agreed. And I want groups like this to succeed. But we need a single, easily digestible message that can encompass all of these issues under one roof. That issue, imo, is wealth inequality. But now it all comes down to phrasing. It’s an issue that isn’t hard to get people on board with if, and only if, we are careful with messaging and branding. I wish I was joking, but that’s the world we live in. Not the one where I demand everything, get nothing, and keep being frustrated that it never changes. It’s time to adapt or continue the cycle of losing.

krashmo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

I don't think phrasing is the problem. I think the problem is a lack of leaders willing to stand behind it. Democrats are trying to pander to rich people while simultaneously tapping into the anger at rich people and that just comes off as disingenuous at best. I think voters will turn out if we give them a reason to. I think Democrats know that too and that's why they fight harder to stop progressives from gaining influence than they do to curb the existing influence of the rich.

aceshigh@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

It sounds like they are against the current administration. These are all of the things that were negative impacted by them.

xye@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Ok but this is the problem I think occupy wall street had. They were protesting the right people, getting attention, but consistently the messaging was vaguely gestures the system, Wall Street, bankers. We can speculate why that messaging wasn’t clear or didn’t get out, but we have an opportunity right now to correct that mistake.

aceshigh@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

So what do you suggest the correct message should be for 50501?

xye@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 1y

Income inequality in whatever the most palatable form is for the target audience who needs to hear it. That’s it. But I’m clearly not convincing you here - I’m just some rando idiot who sees a problem. I would gladly have an adult in the room give a better answer. In lieu of that, this is the best I’ve got for you. I’d love to have a space to discuss these things, I think actionable items like this are missing from current discourse here. BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Well, no, it's the TLD for Mali

Also are hexbear still around? I don't think I've seen them since the domain issue. Not sure of feddit.uk have defederated, I've been banned or they just don't exist any more.

southsamurai@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1y

They set up a new version. Chapo chat or some such shit

poliverso@feddit.it · 2 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Nothing much better here.

I'm sorry that you, who are a user of mine on feddit.it, make these unfounded statements.

Today they canceled me one comment cause of a “Fuck Putin”, while arguing with a Russian troll.

In here, each instance and each community are autonomous and therefore the sensibilities of moderators and administrators can also be different.

The most important thing is to read the rules of the community and those of the instance that hosts you. But if you believe you have been unfairly banned, you can contact the moderator presenting your arguments without victimism and without rancor.

PotatoLibre@feddit.it · 3 pts · 1y

I mean, you probably understand that being a new user and already getting banned for small arbitrary stuff gives a "Reddit vibe".

I must be honest, I haven't read the rules yet cause I believe I can act like a civil person. A rule that states "do no promote hate", can be streched to any ban if you want and that's what Reddit or people in lemmy.ml are doing imo.

Anyway, it wasn't such a big problem. I like Lemmy and thank you for the effort to make this place working.

Got banned today because I don't think socialism would work in 2025 🤷.

I understand people can "Think different", but a cirkle jerk of US socialists in 2025 sounds like a strabic unicorn with three legs and two horns.

If you go to a UFO believer group and say we have no evidence of UFOs, then it is normal that you will be banned...

PotatoLibre@feddit.it · 2 pts · 1y

Well, you have a point there.

PeterisBacon@lemm.ee · 6 pts · 1y

Just got my ban for saying how Luigi is my favorite super marios brother. Like on the racing ones, how accurate he can dome someone with a turtle shell. And he is insanely fast. Like dude can go from one side of the map to the other in speeds unexplainable.

They banned me for violent comments.

I appealed with a 'eat shit, DDD Spez'

Thesongofroland@lemmy.myserv.one · 6 pts · 1y

My account got banned for saying Erdogan was a Muslim terrorist. Turkey’s long arm of the law.

Confidant6198@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 1y

What was that subreddit about?

zweischeisse@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

It worked fine for me just now...

flightyhobler@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 1y

I've been editing my thousands of comments over the past few days (via a script obviously). Fuck them.

groolthedemon@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

Its pretty preposterous to be banned for saying "kill all Nazi's but six" on a site where the CEO used to moderate r/jailbait and the literally racist eugenics loving subreddits r/spacedicks and r/the_donald used to exist.

WHY DO YOU THINK WE SUPRESSED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE???

3dmvr@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

Lol think its funny how many ppl make the instance signup mistake I made, they fail the captcha by not reading it forced to not be able to use their username on their first instance of choice, we really need an option for captcha retrys

I just deleted all my previous posts on Reddit. Want to erase everything I can before leaving. Any hints on best way to wipe clean to avoid being used by AI?

aceshigh@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Suppressed_news is still around.

InverseNurse@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 1y

Yep… three day ban here.

big_salad@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Suppressed_News is still around.

glowing_hans@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1y

r/SuppressedNews has been banned. Seems like suppressed reddit to me

Evono@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1y

Ye... Reddit is run by one entity , while there's absolutely also foul eggs on lemmy it's way better over here , you can allways leave a badly maintained instance and go to a better one if you want.

Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1y

Oh, that's funny

Drradmyc@thelemmy.club · 2 pts · 167d

I just got perms banned for liking a video of a nerf gun. I’ve been there almost since day one of Reddit and now I’m not allowed to be there anymore. For nothing.

CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 336d

Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrections are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy...the frontier of the rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. The need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks.

  • Red, Red, Reddit, stay far from me-e-e-e-e-e-e
  • Don't let me be the one
  • Being manipulated into being apathetic on social media for fear of being banned

What. The. Fuck. surpressed news subreddit is banned? It is over.

I still think shadow-banning and manipulation of the front-page is worse to be honest.

Blame Murica!

Time's have changed And Trump is getting worse He won't obey the judges He just wants to shart and curse

Should we blame the immigrants? Or blame society? Or should we blame the Billionaires like Thiel?

No! blame Murica, blame Murica With all their MAGA conspiracies And flippin'hats made overseas

Blame Murica, blame Murica We need to form a full boycott It's Murica's fault.

I'm gonna get downvoted to oblivion, but leaked isn't public. I posted a link to leaked Starcraft: Ghost build on Web Archive. This game got removed from there.

kindernacht@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

You'll get downvoted because you're wrong. They're government employees, the fact that they were trying to hide their identities doesn't magically make it not public information.

Hellsfire29@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 1y

r/politics also needs to be banned.
