For the record (because I just looked it up, as I also have this problem): it's ctrl+tab, but only if you enable "Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order" in Settings first.

daq@lemmy.sdf.org · 22 pts · 1y

Default behavior is for psychopaths.

I'm so confused every time I use a new browser.

ivanovsky@lemmy.sdf.org · 15 pts · 1y

Also, usually, ctrl + shift + tab goes the opposite way

silasmariner@programming.dev · 9 pts · 1y

Ok that's incredible. I'm gonna get so lost now I've changed that setting. Magnificent

joelfromaus@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 1y (3 replies)

It’s so odd to me that this isn’t the default behaviour for all browsers especially Edge. It’s literally alt+tab behaviour but for some reason browser designers decided it wouldn’t work that way.

Itsamelemmy@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1y (2 replies)

This works in edge. Alt+tab also cycles between 2 tabs in edge if a previos tab was selected, or between windows if not. Which annoys the hell out of me, going from email to edge, switching to the tab I need to copy from and expecting alt+tab to bring me back to email and instead just goes back to the tab I didn't want.

joelfromaus@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Alt+tab also cycles between 2 tabs in edge if a previos tab was selected

Alt+tab? What about ctrl+tab? What we were talking about…

To answer my own question, I did a bit of searching and it looks like ctrl+tab still only cycles to the next tab in Edge. There’s a few requests for it to cycle to previous tab like alt+tab but looking through the settings and stuff it still doesn’t look like an option.

Always happy to be proven wrong but it looks like it’s still not an option.

Itsamelemmy@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 1y

I replied too quick, and missed the recent used order of the op. Edge just cycles left to right with ctrl+tab I think. However, alt+tab actually would have been the solution for the oop at least in edge. Because it does go to your last used tab.

merde@sh.itjust.works · 42 pts · 1y (3 replies)

i know that you're suffering but, still, thanks for the laughter ! @interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml

Million@lemmy.zip · 19 pts · 1y

Dude answered his own question. Click random tab -> drag current tab off the window -> window returns to previous tab without any tabs being closed.

Unhinged behavior nonetheless

Ziglin@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

Control+Shift+T restores the last closed tab. That solution works lol (but it really feels like it shouldn't)

Cruxifux@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 1y

Is there a command that closes all tabs because I would 100% recommend that one to the guy

someguy3@lemmy.world · 33 pts · 1y

Best start a new tab and Google whatever you were looking at.

DoGeeseSeeGod@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 23 pts · 1y (8 replies)

Crtl + L to go to address bar, type % then a space, then the tab you looking for. Will search open tabs

Glytch@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Helpful, but only works if I remember the name of the tab.

hansolo@lemmy.today · 7 pts · 1y (3 replies)

It's either Facebook or Facebook.

Glytch@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Or TvTropes

Glytch@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

My point exactly

slampisko@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

In this I wish Firefox was more like Chromium. I use tab search a lot and Ctrl + Shift + A is much more efficient than this 3-step combo

DoGeeseSeeGod@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 1y
  • will let you search your bookmark. I think there might be one for history as well.

Plus there might be a similar macro in Firefox I just don't know about

sundray@lemmus.org · 18 pts · 1y (1 reply)

This is why tab search is a thing 😭

notabot@piefed.social · 17 pts · 1y

But all I remember is that it was a possibly interesting page about the problem I'm dealing with. I have 42 tabs open on the same site, and none of them have useful names. If I google it I'll end up with about 52 uselessly names tabs.

It is cathartic closing an entire window fullof tabs when the problem is dealt with though. You can almost hear the machine sigh as it releases a big chunk of memory.

shalafi@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1y (8 replies)

My brain can't handle more than a dozen open tabs. If I need more than 8 or so, I'll sling some in another browser instance. I honestly don't know if this is because I'm dumb or smart, but at my last jobs the smarter people always had about 2 dozen tabs open. LOL, no one ever rebooted.

I had a user that did this with outlook emails all the time. Since she was in leadership, we had to put up with it. At one point we even had to escalate it to Microsoft and they came back saying that Outlook is simply not designed to be used in such a fashion. That did not dissuade the user at all. After maxing out the computer specs, she ended up exceeding the actual limitation of the software for resources used.

I think eventually she got fired for incompetence for other things. It was quite a relief.

Firefox tabs survive reboots and waste about as much resources as a bookmark. Those people should really migrate.

xylol@leminal.space · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

You can set Firefox to purge everything when you close it, not sure why its not set as default

Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Closing all tabs is default behavior.

jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 1y

clearly they need more RAM

msantossilva@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 1y (8 replies)

That seems perfectly reasonable. That is little more than 100 tabs per window. I routinely have more than 500 tabs per window. Currently, I have 3 windows open with a rough total of 15000 tabs

Firefox only actually allocates memory for loaded tabs. I have >400 open at the moment but the 700MiB of memory are shared between three bloated websites and Firefox itself.

Meanwhile when I was looking for a new browser a bit back I tried finding one without a tab feature at all lol

Ephera@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I believe, you can basically turn it off in Firefox, by telling it to open new windows instead of tabs.

Might need to hide the tab bar via userChrome.css, though...

TabbsTheBat@pawb.social · 1 pts · 1y

Oh I have it figured out now :3

But ye, I have my browser set to launch a new window. Not on firefox tho, I switched off of it cause I didn't care to mess with files just to get the tab bar off of my screen lol

@aard@kyu.de is that an actual issue for you?

aard@kyu.de · 3 pts · 1y (6 replies)

treestyle tabs helps a lot with tab organization. Reasonably amount of tabs can't really be managed with the default tab interface of any browser (haven't tried the recently added native vertical tabs yet - they also added in tab groups, which I was heavily relying on before they ripped it out a bit over a decade ago. Not sure if I'll find back to my old workflow after all that time, though)

Ziglin@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

I love the new vertical tabs. I just wish I could select which side of the window the sidebar is placed on per window since I have a browser on each monitor.

I also sort my tabs by entertainment or manuals in the one window, active reading or similar in the main window. That helps sort my 400+ tabs enough and if that's not enough I can always search.

piccolo@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1y (4 replies)

People really reinvent things like a bookmark manager.

aard@kyu.de · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I haven't really used bookmarks for probably close to two decades, for various reasons.

Keeping them synchronized always was a pain, and that was before you got into multiple browsers. That part at least is better now.

Then the interfaces to manage them sucked - I did try a bit back then to manage them externally, but the storage formats also were stupid.

And then I seemed to have reached the number of bookmarks the browsers no longer were able to handle (presumably due to the shitty way they were storing them), and adding or editing bookmarks always included several seconds between clicks to wait for the browser to react.

Pretty much everything apart from the first point is still true for the built in bookmark managers.

piccolo@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

And tabs management is somehow better? I dont even wrap my head around that you'd have more bookmarks that it slows the browser but yet think that many tabs wouldnt?

aard@kyu.de · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Well, one thing is that I have significantly less tabs than I had bookmarks. My bookmarks where somewhere high in the 5-figure range, maybe even 6 figure.

My heaviest used system has less than 10k tabs open.

It's not ideal, but the tab trees in treestyle tabs mean I usually can just scroll a short bit and click to find what I need.

Ideal would be a fully external bookmark manager - but browsers don't have APIs for that, so you'd have to end up writing an extension just to talk to your external management solution, and since they gimped the firefox plugin system about a decade ago you don't really have any useful APIs for doing that. (I'm current maintainer of the emacs keybindings extension for firefox, it's a hot mess to get a fraction of the functionality that was possible with the old extension system working. No idea why they don't offer the ability to do custom keybindings)

piccolo@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1y

I still cant fathom having that many bookmarks... generally if i dont use a website often enough, i dont even bookmark it because i will just forget the website even exists. So no point in bookmarking it to begin with. I rely on the history search. Just type the first two-three letters in the server address and it recalls every website i visited or have bookmarked, and includes web searches. Vastly more convenient.

markovs_gun@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (12 replies)

What do browsers even let you do this? I feel like it should cap out at like 200 max. Nobody even needs 200 but there's got to be some kind of limit somewhere.

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1y (2 replies)

200 is newbie numbers.

Ebber@lemmings.world · 11 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Damn, I start getting overwhelmed at 10

MehBlah@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y

I had fifty open one day after working a tech related bug. I wasn't getting anywhere so I closed it out and switched search engines. Less than thirty minutes later I and found a solution.

Too many tabs is a huge distraction. Its also a common thing to see if you are working tech support for a organization. I've seen well over a hundred tabs open on some users browsers.

grrgyle@slrpnk.net · 6 pts · 1y (8 replies)

If you can bg inactive tabs they just become another type of bookmark, because they don't the up any memory

markovs_gun@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y (7 replies)

Then use bookmarks. We shouldn't design around people using products completely incorrectly.

Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Tabs are part checklist. If I use bookmarks, they go out of siht, out of mind. As tabs there's a reminder to resolve the topic.

markovs_gun@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Homie if you have over 200 items on a checklist you aren't doing half that shit.

Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

No, some items have a dozen tabs associated, and others are recurring tasks.

I only have maybe 15 topics in my tabs, half are waiting on something else to be resolved, and a sixth are videos to be watched.

markovs_gun@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Realistically- how often do you actually go through and take care of these items, and how important was it really if it could sit on the list while hundreds of other things pile up?

Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1y

Hundreds of other things? I just said 15 things!

There's definitely tab rot though, and coming back to an area often sees half of the tabs cleared before continuing. I can't imagine that kind of turnover with bookmarks though, especially with how comparatively clunky removing bookmarks is.

Boockmarks don't updated themselves either, so keeping my place in a story or post list is way harder. Tabs also maintain physical correlations, with a parent tab closing all children when closed, and staying near where you use them. Bookmarks need to be explicitly organized and updated, taking several clicks for each, instead of being organized and updated just by using them.

How often are tabs processed? Most tabs get closed before they're a week old, some groups are reused every week --TTRPG references mostly-- currently using ~15 tabs: 5 indexes, 2 character sheets, 5 common references, and whatever weird stuff was relevant last session

Other groups are used or closed as projects are worked on: 6 tabs for Factorio calculators, ~10 tabs for exoplanet research for worldbuilding, ~20 game tutorials (these could probably be bookmarks), ~15 wikis for the various games I've played in the last few months (half could be bookmarks), ~10 tabs for setting up my new phone (these will be closed soon), 5 tabs I just closed because I stopped needing them, ~5 youtube series I listen to while I work, as the topic strikes me, ~15 individual videos I'll probably watch in the next few weeks (several are 2+ hours long), ~15 music tabs of either specific songs or topics I listen to as the fancy strikes me, ~20 tabs of bugs and issues I've been having (which will get cleared when I resolve them or stop caring), ~20 tabs of research for a work project (15 will probably be closed immediately)(should probably not be in my personal browser), ~10 tabs of stuff I just looked up in the last couple of days and haven't closed yet, And probably 10 aspirational tabs of stuff I'd like to get to in the future, but probably won't (definitely won't if they're bookmarks).

I've touched ~80% in the last 3 months, and ~50% this month, although my phone has a lot more old aspirational tabs.

When it comes to a list building up, what's the difference between old tabs and old bookmarks anyway? Neither are using any resources. A link wouldn't be and more or less important as a bookmark than a tab.

There are search in tab title extensions around, if your herding extension for the thousands of tabs not already supports that.

lemmyknow@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Pretty sure Firefox can search for open tabs directly from the Awesome Bar out of the box. Can't remember the specific character that activates that filter on the bar. Maybe ^ or ~

Ziglin@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Somebody else mentioned '%' but even without that if the URL matches completely it will default to switching to an open tab with it already open.

MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 1y

Not sure. It seems it does or maybe not and it should, but i can't find how.

hsdkfr734r@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 1y

Ctrl + tab if LRU is set.
It's like alt + tab for windows, but for tabs. :)

Also: Ctrl + h.... What?! A searchable history of all URLs ever clicked? Tomfoolery!
