Sooo... I'm guessing the complaints are coming from people who didn't watch it? Because I can't put my finger on anything that was horrible or false or anything.
I'm confident they were just looking for a reason after Colbert. Seth Meyers better use his last few weeks before he gets pinched to come up with a contingency plan, cus this is a fucking crackdown.
My guess is that the right wing propaganda machine to hide the epstein connections, doesn't want it shown that trump takes kirk lightly and doesn't give a shit about his death. It's hard to keep it going if dear leader doesn't even care.
his mocking of Trump's grieving of that dude's death was low and distasteful regardless, to say the least.
Edit (and keep downvoting me if you want):
Trump is a narcissistic psycopath who is incapbable of symapthy that's why he is expressing his grief through emotionless shock. This is the way all psycopaths sincerely express their condolences. It does not mean you make fun of them or make fun of death of someone who is already dead.
Charlie Kirk is meeting up with god in front of all the maimed kids of Gaza which he advocated for their slaughter and genocide. He deserves that and it's ironic how he was killed and the world is better without him.
I want to say a million thing but I can't bring myself to make fun of his death or make fun of the grieving of his supporters or family.
That is not in me regardless of how much I disagree, hate and wish harm upon these people.
Trump isn't grieving Trump didn't know who the fuck he was. His team is using it for political reasons. In what religion would Charlie be in Heaven? Ah yes the American Christian religion which doesn't listen to anything in the Bible.
But I mean, he didn't even compare Kirk's neck to fountain of Kool Aid, or make fun of the look on his face, mention how he was just about to lie yet again about gun violence before he died by gun violence, or anything.
And it's clear you didn't even watch this anyway if you mention Trump grieving.
I've been saying that the billionaires and oligarchs — who own the majority of the S&P500 and political class — WANT fascism for the last 2 decades. They are behind it's political resurgence, globally; most have already publicly stated things that prove they are authoritarian sociopaths (Musk, Thiel, the Koch's, Ellison, Zuck, etc).
This explains why Trump has never seen the invite or a prison cell, despite 100 clear as day felonies, why the Dem establishment has never done more than performative resistance, etc.
They always do. When capitalism starts to falter and the public opinion starts to turn on the system the ownership class goes right to fascism to crush the population.
I'd argue that for at least half of them, capitalism is just a stepping stone to their true goals. They didn't opportunistically become fascist; they've always been that way
The decision by Nexstar comes as the broadcast station is seeking FCC approval for its $6.2 billion mega deal to acquire Tegna, a deal that would make Nexstar by far the largest owner of local TV stations in the country.
The FCC would have to raise the 40 percent ownership cap in order to let the deal advance.
Quote from The Hollywood Reporter. Just like CBS with Colbert.
I’d argue you could’ve trusted them MORE before the Fairness Doctrine was murdered
Red Scare politics would suggest they've always been untrustworthy. "Fairness" Doctrine only ever included two liberalized perspectives. Meet The Press wasn't bringing on Michael Parenti and Murray Bookchin to debate David Duke and Ayn Rand.
Out of curiosity, I went and checked the front page of r/all. Of the current top 25 posts, these are the ones which pertain to the Kimmel situation followed by their respective subreddit:
The post on r/politics pertains to before the show was pulled, but it was posted after it was officially pulled. Some subreddits do delete repeat posts that are about the same story to keep the discussion all in one thread, so maybe that has happened with that subreddit?
[Edit: added slashes to prevent auto-formatting from changing the numbers]
Spez got invited to talk to Congress about radicalism on social media. I bet that has something to do with it. Steve "Bugeyes" Huffman will not turn down an opportunity to help Trump out.
How we monetize might need to change. Maybe less ads, more donations? Budgets will have to go down, but that's not so bad if the leash finally comes off.
We just found out when someone does something that all the top supposedly leftist commentators immediately capitulate and actually cry about it like a bunch of bitch-baby neoliberals
Even this framing is dishonest - he didn't make comments about Charlie Kirk, he was mocking MAGA for rushing to weaponize his death. ABC shut down his show for a valid criticism of MAGA.
Because they are institutions that are trying to provide comprehensive discussion since the world is grey. We don’t have to like it, but that’s probably why they allow it. Plus, yes, they make money.
"I understand your point, well ok, I don't really understand it, but that doesn't matter. Mercury is in retrograde so that explains everything. No need to bring numbers into this, unless we're consulting numerology, then we need them of course."
I've seen this before. It would really be a lot nicer if these quotes all had sources. Just showing someone a list of quotes with no context doesn't really scream "credible" to this target audience.
They're just getting started. Colbert was fired as a demand to allow the sale of CBS' to Larry Ellison, 2nd richest man, and a vicious MAGA. With Colbert out, the decks were cleared for the sale.
CBS used to have the reputation of being the gold standard of broadcast news. Now it's just going to be one more mouthpiece in the Conservative Propaganda Machine.
"Why can't we put all the people that disagree with our speech in jail? Why?!"
Free speech absolutist means they want to be able to say the horrible things they believe out loud so they can encourage others to act on those beliefs. At the same time, they believe its their "right" to continue to hold everyone in their life hostage and force them to tolerate their lies and hate speech.
Canceled my D+ and Hulu subscriptions and wrote in other:
“Capitulating to Trump’s version of fascist America and knee jerk reaction to Kimmel made me rethink why I should give you my money. I don’t even like or watch Kimmel, but you are allowing free speech to be violated. I don’t support free speech abolitionists.“
Nice! Good on you! Don’t worry about not saying why, if everyone is canceling today then they probably know why. Hulu didn’t have a spot to leave a why but Disney did. 🤷♂️
Absolutely! I've been an ABC News viewer for many years, but I've been concerned lately. This cements it. I'll be switching my news to NBC for the time being.
Okay I know we're all pretty deep into the nerdweb here, but let's not lose the thread of reality here. ABC still pulls close to 5 million individual viewers every night, JUST on broadcast and cable rebroadcast. That ain't fuckin nothing; TV is still an important and influential medium.
Kinda. It's sorta like anonymous where pretty much anyone can hack a system and claim they're part of anonymous. The shooter could have killed Kirk and said he's antifa, but there is no actual group.
"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,”
No, they should not only stay on the air, but lean into this and talk about the situation even more. Being silent on the issue is exactly what those in power want.
Great idea. I didn’t mean to imply that a protest wouldn’t also include them being vocal about why they are protesting and what they would do during that time frame. I would assume it would be covered by media along with interviews, etc.
Seems like a great recipe for unrest. Destroy economy and even take away any relief valves like Colbert and Kimmel.
Cannot imagine that will make anyone happier with Taco. The dumbfucks that hate Kimmel and Colbert don't watch their shows anyway, so the only way they will be "happy" is that they will sit there with dark little hearts and a smug grin about "owning the libs". But that won't improve their life one iota and these broken people definitely will not be happier for it.
So he's on paid vacation. Getting an eight figure salary to do nothing ain't so bad for a guy who got into comedy selling "Women jumping on trampolines" as his main gimmick.
Excited to see what kind of mindless AI slop they get replaced with.
I'm not pointing that out to crap on him. In fact the opposite. I'm sure back in those days he never envisioned that he'd become one of the most famous people in the US.
My favorite era of his is watching him awkwardly read disgusting trivia question category names on Win Ben Stein's Money.
Shortly before ABC announced the suspension, Nexstar, an owner of ABC affiliate stations around the country, said that it would pre-empt Mr. Kimmel’s program “for the foreseeable future” because of his remarks.
Any creative ideas to turn cancel culture against these bitchass media companies & their dickhead affiliates?
It needs to make the impact on their pocketbook to comply with fascism higher than the cost to oppose.

Well what are the remarks? What a shit article. It's barely longer than a sentence.
Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 321d
"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,”
https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/jimmy-kimmel-pulled-abc-charlie-kirk-nexstar-rcna232036
Also, every headline I've seen portrays it as a comment on Kirk or on the shooting. But it's entirely about the MAGA reaction.
RagingRobot@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 321d
Yeah all the articles are trying to leave out the actual remarks because there isn't anything bad about what he said. Maga just didn't like it.

All late night shows and their crews should walk out in protest.
lividweasel@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 321d
No, they should not only stay on the air, but lean into this and talk about the situation even more. Being silent on the issue is exactly what those in power want.
santa@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 321d
Great idea. I didn’t mean to imply that a protest wouldn’t also include them being vocal about why they are protesting and what they would do during that time frame. I would assume it would be covered by media along with interviews, etc.
Either way, good point.

I expected nothing and yet I'm still let down.

Reminder to everyone to cancel their Hulu/Disney+ subscriptions if they still have them.

Taco has always been a whiny little bitch about both of them.

Time to use your millions to set up a home shop, Jimmy. Keep doing the thing, but indie style
Professorozone@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 320d
That's just fucking outrageous. Taking about lunatics.

But I thought that "cancel culture" was anathema to the GOP and MAGA?
Is this something I'm too Canadian to understand?
Treczoks@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 321d
Instead of shitting their pants, they should fight against the system Trump and Murdoch.
CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 321d

Excited to see what kind of mindless AI slop they get replaced with.
mctoasterson@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 321d
Even worse than that. He started off working a shitty job at a radio station, fetching coffee for coworkers and whatnot.
hdnsmbt@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 321d
What, he didn't start as a TV show host right away? What a loser!
mctoasterson@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 321d
I'm not pointing that out to crap on him. In fact the opposite. I'm sure back in those days he never envisioned that he'd become one of the most famous people in the US.
My favorite era of his is watching him awkwardly read disgusting trivia question category names on Win Ben Stein's Money.

Any creative ideas to turn cancel culture against these bitchass media companies & their dickhead affiliates? It needs to make the impact on their pocketbook to comply with fascism higher than the cost to oppose.
