Not sure why, but everytime I think about German music, I think of this song, 99 Luftballoons. What is the most famous German song in your European country?

Funny trivia about that song; The English version was #1 in Germany and the German version was #1 in the US.

In the Netherlands we have/like several popular German artists, for instance this one by Falco was a big hit.

Falco - Der Kommissar

Falco was Austrian.

Not the time I've encountered such a confusion.

kindenough@kbin.earth · 3 pts · 336d

My bad. Certainly he was.

zout@fedia.io · 5 pts · 336d (1 reply)

I'd say Jeanny or Rock me Amadeus were a lot bigger. There was also Matthias Reim - Verdammt ich lieb dich.

kindenough@kbin.earth · 2 pts · 336d

True.

Der Kommissar was his first hit in the Netherlands though. Jeanny and Rock Me Amadeus produced by Bolland & Bolland (Dutch producer duo but you probably know).

Other German songs from what I remember as a teenager… Halt Mich, Völlig Losgelöst, Da Da Da, Skandal in Sperrbezirk.

Idk most famous but to me "German music" contains:

  • Kraftwerk
  • Amon Duul II
  • Can
  • KMFDM
  • Rammstein
  • Dolls United's version of Eine Insel Mit Zwei Bergen
  • 99 Luftballoons
  • Mo-Do Eins Zwei Polezei
  • Heidevolk, oddly
  • That one Alestorm EP with Weiber Und Wein
  • Blumchen Heut' ist Mein Tag
  • Bubbles Bidibodi Bidibu
  • Centhron
  • Falkenbach
  • Atari Teenage Riot
  • Neu!
  • Neun Welten

Uhhhh fuck I know I'm forgetting some..

AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space · 5 pts · 335d

Alphaville were German, IIRC. Their song Forever Young was huge in Europe

johnydoe666@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 335d (2 replies)

Heidevolk, AFAIK, doesn’t have a song in German though. They sing in Dutch and sometimes English

ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 335d (1 reply)

Which is the odd part lol. Idk why I associate them with Germany, but I'm sure my brain has a reason.

johnydoe666@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 334d

I do believe they are more popular and do more shows outside of the Netherlands, so probably in Germany as well. That could be it

AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 335d

Wasn't Scorpion also German?

Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 336d (1 reply)

No! Not that one!

Don't! Don't do it!

sad Beethoven noises

Tuuktuuk@piefed.ee · 8 pts · 336d

Cannot speak for all if us Finns, but at least for me the first association was: "Rammstein", and when I continued pondering which song specifically, my brain popped an answer as if it was a self clarity: "Du hast".

Hello_there@fedia.io · 8 pts · 336d (2 replies)

German? Is Rammstein still big?

Ephera@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 335d (1 reply)

I think, they're bigger outside of Germany than inside. 😅

groet@feddit.org · 4 pts · 335d

If you are into rock/metal they are huge. Station tours sold out in seconds.

However in the last year or so the lead singer came under fire for sexual misconduct with fans by inviting them backstage to party (and have sex) and then using date rape drugs on them.

Die Woodys - Fichtl's Lied

Seriously: I'm Dutch, so we know a lot of them. Maybe Nicole - Ein bisschen Frieden?

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 7 pts · 335d

I think about AmeriKa by Rammstein.

Jakylla@jlai.lu · 6 pts · 336d (3 replies)

Yeah... Asking me (French) about German music, I'll tell you either Nena or Tokyo Hotel. I Think Nena is most known

Bourff@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 336d (1 reply)

Is Tokyo Hotel still a thing?

Jakylla@jlai.lu · 1 pts · 335d

Don't think so, but I never actually listened to them so I may be wrong

fibojoly@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 335d

We... we don't talk about Tokyo Hotel.

fibojoly@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 335d

I reckon Scorpions was my first contact, in France. Everybody knows the Winds of Change here. Rammstein came later for me, with Du Riechst So Gut. I love them, they're still on my daily commute music.

I’m guessing; # Er gehört zu mir

I'm a great fan of 80s pop songs. In my opinion Alphaville's Big In Japan is absolute best
