Ooh, ooh...do the Commander in Chief next. He's the fattest one of all.
Shay20@lemmy.world · -76 pts · 330d
You mean civilian leadership vs military leadership?
FDR won WWII from a wheelchair, your comment makes no sense.
Jtotheb@lemmy.world · 38 pts · 329d
Sorry, what’s the purported correlation between FDR’s paralysis and Trump’s general unhealthiness?
Shay20@lemmy.world · -35 pts · 329d
The idea that the CiC needs to be physically fit to do the job.
Jtotheb@lemmy.world · 34 pts · 329d
Well, they obviously do need to be fit for the job, hence Trump’s mental decline being even more concerning than his original mental state. Given the lack of fit Americans interested in enlistment you might also think a bit of leading by example couldn’t hurt. And of course, I’d hate to be a National Guard member in an administrative role sent home for optics when I didn’t need to be physically fit to perform my job.
Shay20@lemmy.world · -36 pts · 329d
“Do need to be fit”
So FDR was fit in his wheelchair when he won WWII?
Seriously, military leadership and civilian are wildly different.
“Optics”
It’s standards and discipline, not optics. Can’t meet the standard, tough shit.
Jtotheb@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 329d
Are you trying to have a “gotcha” moment here? You’re arguing with yourself. You’ve already stated the commander in chief doesn’t need to be physically fit to serve, and I’ve not disagreed, and already stated that their mental state is of much more concern to me.
I don’t think we’re going to have a meaningful conversation on something quite as nuanced as leading by example, so let’s just call that one a mulligan.
Anyone in the National Guard has already met the organization’s standards, and moves by the presidential administration to change those standards as a direct response to bad optics are obviously done to improve the optics
Shay20@lemmy.world · -21 pts · 329d
“Gotcha”
Nope, just wanted to make sure we agree that the folks talking about Trump needing to be in good physical shape as CiC are silly.
“Mental”
Sure but that’s not a military standard. Theres no mental PT test.
“Leading by example”
That’s in the military, like how Milley should have. Civilian leadership physical fitness doesn’t matter.
“NG”
And if they fall out of those standards, or can’t meet the current standards, can be kicked out.
We all know this, it’s not new and it’s entirely appropriate. If anything, this is long overdue.
phutatorius@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 329d
You know the difference, so you're just nagging.
Archangel1313@lemmy.ca · 16 pts · 329d
You didn't listen to Hegseth's speech to the generals? He said, everyone in the chain of command from the bottom to the top, needs to be in prime physical condition.
Shay20@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 329d
Yep, in the military, CiC does not count and never has. FDR with his hot wheels?
LePoisson@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 329d
The grander point is Trump is unfit under a number of metrics.
The even bigger point is he straight up should not be CiC - nobody here is trying to say a fat person can't be CiC but it is super hypocritical with what bullshit is going on right now.
Shay20@lemmy.world · -6 pts · 329d
Cool and the voters disagreed with you.
“Hypocritical”
Not even a little bit, since there’s no requirement for fitness for the CiC. FDR won WWII in a wheelchair, it’s literally irrelevant.
Hegar@fedia.io · 121 pts · 330d
The recruiting crisis in the US military is pretty bad.
The funniest example is 24M$ the national guard spent in 2012 on recruiting at nascar. This generated 24,800 prospective recruits. ~$1000 per interested recruit. Not bad. Of those, 20 were eligible to join. 99.92% unfit for service. Of those 20, all declined to join. There's no evidence that the 88M$ spent on nascar between 2011-2013 generated a single recruit.
This is part of why the exclusion of trans folks, women and others from the military is such an own goal for the fascists. Any potential recruiting pool that's closed hastens the decline of our imperial supremacy.

Also if there was a draft they'd have to put me in jail or I'd leg it to canada. This has come up in conversation before and people are like "Erm nuh uh you'd totally go" like no bro you'll actually die to an IED in something-istan.
kent_eh@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 329d
The largest standing military (outside of an active war) in the world has a recruiting crisis?
yeather@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 329d
Yes, the military is overextended and “undermanned” in critical areas. I know for certain we are short about 2000 pilots and 3500 air traffic controllers in the USAF, but every branch and complex job is hurting for qualified people.
kent_eh@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 329d
I'm sure having a completely unqualified commander in chief and secretary of defense will totally help recruiting...
/s, if it wasn't obvious
yeather@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 329d
This was actually the first time in about 8 years they made recruiting goals. The only issue is they had an abundance for the lower end jobs and much less for the higher intelect enlisted jobs. I think the one exception is the Marines, they usually make their metrics.

Shay20@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 329d
You just made the same rationale that could applied to any of a host of different reasons people aren’t allowed to join the military, like flat feet.
Joining the military isn’t a right.

Shay20@lemmy.world · -14 pts · 329d

Shay20@lemmy.world · -27 pts · 329d

Shay20@lemmy.world · -22 pts · 329d
I don’t care? It just confirms what I think about the modern left.

They need to be held to a higher standard of behavior by the people. So they must be critiqued it is crucial in a functional democracy.

Honestly, I don't think you've been around many military people. One of the great things about most enlisted people is they have to have a sense of humor or they probably wouldn't make it. They're constantly joking on each other. They've heard the "... and their wive's boyfriend" thing hundreds of times probably, including from other military people.

minorkeys@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 329d
Being fat doesn't reduce a leader's ability to manage logistics, define tactics and strategy, build confidence in leadership or use technology. This focus on physical capabilities while we watch drones and robots take over modern warfare is insane. This incompetence will remove highly skilled soldiers and replace them with those less capable of modern warfare, and likely less capable of using new technologies. The people who are removed will go somewhere and bring the value of that skillset with them, empowering someone or something other than the US military. This administration's obsession with loyalty and obedience over competence and independent thinking will weaken America and create opportunities for adversaries to exploit.
Reverting to the values of a former age is a death sentence for the future. The world has changed and if America refuses to keep up with those changes, it will only hasten the fall.
