Nearly half of Europeans see Donald Trump as “an enemy of Europe”, rather more rate the risk of war with Russia as high and more than two-thirds believe their country would not be able to defend itself in the event of such a war, a survey has found.
The nine-country poll for the Paris-based European affairs debate platform Le Grand Continent also found that nearly three-quarters of respondents wanted their country to stay in the EU, with almost as many saying leaving the union had harmed the UK.
Jean-Yves Dormagen, a political science professor and founder of the polling agency Cluster17, said: “Europe is not only facing growing risks, it is also undergoing a transformation of its historical, geopolitical and political environment. The overall picture [of the survey] portrays a Europe that is anxious, that is deeply aware of its vulnerabilities and that is struggling to project itself positively into the future.”
The polling found that an average of 48% of people across the nine countries see Trump as an outright foe – ranging from highs of 62% in Belgium and 57% in France to lows of 37% in Croatia and 19% in Poland.

Did Poland really not learn its lesson in WW2? Why are they still gravitating heavily (vs other countries) towards fascist leaders? Is there a culture thing going on that I never learned? Is there some socio-economic reason that smarter polish people are leaving Poland or dumber people are going to Poland or maybe not able to leave to better conditions?
This needs studying if we don’t have answers.

It's insane, but it should be expected. Fascists have been using social media, traditional media, and surveillance capitalism — big data and analytics — to wage psychological warfare for decades. Most of the major players are American corporations, and all of the world's elite/oligarchs are all invested in them; they're all just as anti-democratic, pro-authoritarianism, mentally ill, criminally corrupt, and depraved as each other.
This is the expected result when fascist state media like News Corp are allowed to exist; spewing disinformation 24/7. When a class of ultra-wealthy are allowed to exist, and the multi-tiered "democratic" and "justice" systems they create. When criminals are allowed to operate behind the liability shield of an LLC.

The whole world is fascist now. The US spread it to every corner of the globe.
Even the countries that are considered progressive still have huge ever growing wealth gaps with the majority of their policies determined by the wealthy's favorite proxy corporate influence.
Instead of protecting our citizens, like you alluded to, they commit to continuous psychological warfare. The President of the US is essentially an abusive partner you can't leave.
The only silver lining is billions more people now have access to fresh water, food, and electricity. Their lives have been improved dramatically in the last twenty years.

Based on policy? Yes. Based on beliefs and values? No. For historical reasons European countries have a stronger welfare state, but that's mostly inertia. Compared to America Europe is still in its Southern Strategy phase, and given the rapid success of the far right I'd say the nationalism is actually worse, in part due to America having never been an ethnostate. Stuff that either doesn't find purchase or remains restricted to the right in America sees a lot more popular acceptance in, say, France and Germany. This is the case for anti-immigration sentiment, for example, and don't get me started on French laicite. The American right being more mature and having had more time to organize* shouldn't be confused for Americans being more rightwing in their values.
*The modern European far right has only really had ammunition since the 2015 immigration crisis, while in America it dates back to the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

These parties are getting big enough to be in the government if the democratic ones do not stay away from them.

I believe it's the same thing in France. People despise and mock the US administration yet love the local versions of Trump. Their minds are taken on by a oligarch media frenzy mixed with massive russian/Chinese social network attacks against western values replacing them with hate towards our own people but different from the historic skin color/religion and a focus on exaggerating the perception of corruption among those we have freely elected.
They lack clarity to the point I hope solar flares soon knock out the internet for a few weeks before elections. The short and long term damage from said solar flares would probably be way lower than what we might otherwise see happen! I can't believe I'm saying this seriously, yet I see it.
