“I can’t believe this is America”: U.S. Veteran who voted for Trump says ICE arrest of his wife shattered everything he believed

https://wtfdetective.blog/veteran-cant-believe-america-ice-arrest/

All the warnings fell on deaf ears, huh? Must be service-related hearing-loss.

The only belief that's been shattered mildly bruised is that he is in the in-group, and that by association his wife is too. But it's a safe bet that he still believes himself to be in the in-group.

Kichae@lemmy.ca · 54 pts · 213d

Exactly. You vote for the Leopards Eating Peoples' Faces Party because you want to watch the leopards eating someone's face. You just never believe it will be your face.

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 213d (2 replies)

“Why did you vote for him?” a member of Congress asked.

“Because I was an idiot,” the veteran replied.

This was him speaking to congress, seems he learned.

NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 213d (1 reply)

If it took until now for him to ‘learn’ then I don’t trust his ability to actually learn things.

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 212d

Having grown up in the southern US, it can be indoctrinating. Especially in religious areas of which he is a part. Am I going to defend him? No, he made his choices. Am I happy he's willing to go speak in front of congress? Yes.

Supervisor194@lemmy.world · 118 pts · 213d (3 replies)

Evangelical Christian people were lied to, if you really want to know the truth. And that’s exactly what happened.

Evangelical Christians are easy to lie to, if you want to know the truth, because they disdain intelligence, preferring their world in which they cosplay magic in fairyland 24/7 without even a tiny hint of self-awareness (because they have none). Given the same choice he would do it again, because he's too cost-sunk in his dumbass roleplaying to do anything different.

KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 31 pts · 213d

Evangelical Christians just want to hear that they're going to be rewarded for their suffering. Catholics as well. The Rapture, Heaven, Honoring the Son of God...

It's a whole group of miserable people who are desperate for affirmation that their misery has meaning. Then they groom their children into miserable lives, and pressure strangers into being miserable as well. It's incredibly sad.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 213d (2 replies)

I’m now of the opinion that most of the “trump voters” (which, again, not the majority of the country, and I’m not 100% convinced the election wasn’t bought or stolen) are either ignorant but generally well-meaning people who probably thought Reagan was fine and just want this admin to be over with while keeping everything they have and, ideally, “getting more” - OR - are the racist bigoted garbage people we mostly assume them all to be on here.

The difference is enormous, and it is absolutely controlled and maintained by traditional media. (Which now includes the trainwrecks of facepals and the nazi twits.)

Totally preventable, absolutely foreseen, and fwiw explained 1,000 different times in as many ways. But here we are either preaching to the choir or fighting with leftists because they’re the only other ones smart and/or savvy enough to be here.

TL;DR it’s not going to get better without a popular Democrat.

Seleni@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 213d (1 reply)

It’s not going to get better even with a popular democrat. Over and over again, even as the leopards are ripping their faces off, they announce that they’re sad about getting eaten, but they would totally vote for the Orange Felon again.

Politics for them isn’t about choosing a good government, or getting someone to represent them properly. It’s team sports, and you have to vote for your team so your side wins.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 213d

I think that’s partially true but not completely. A popular Democrat shifted things to the better in 92 and 2008. They did so amongst most of the same Fox “News” and Limbaugh followers that had sewn up everything before.

Yes, there are ‘sports fan’ politics that will never vote for a woman, god forbid a black woman, or a gay man, probably for our foreseeable lifetimes. Right now, they tip the scales.

So when the Democrats put forth a white man next (or, possibly, a black man) let’s not be shocked. I mean, this place will go up in flames and our ‘leftist’ compatriots will work overtime to defeat them again, but - that’s why we’re here (again). Because the majority of voters can’t imagine a better world that isn’t very much like the one we live in now. And imo that’s true across most if not all democracies.

Radical progressivism has no allies. Radical conservatism has immediate history, allies, and a very, very low bar to entry. So if we don’t move forward from the middle, it’s probably not going to move forward. That’s not ideal, but it’s likely the reality.

And yes, they were lied to but come on... it was not a subtle lie, hard to verify, based on mostly truth.. the lie was so outrageously evident, I cannot believe anyone is stupid enough to buy it

AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 213d

Some San Diego cop found out the same thing a few weeks ago. They arrested, and deported, his British wife. IIRC that was at her final immigration hearing, where she would have been given a green card.

BassTurd@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 213d (1 reply)

I think blaming it on gullibility or ignorance is wrong. These people aren't that stupid, they're just hatefully people that didn't think they would be targets. I feel bad for this dude's wife being kidnapped, but he can rot in Hell with every other Trump voter.

SparroHawc@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 213d

I feel like that is overly reductive. These are people who are seeing their lives become harder year over year, and are being handed a convenient scapegoat by people they were taught to trust. Their biggest crime is usually a lack of critical thinking.... to start with. It often grows from there to a lack of empathy.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 213d

It is pretty amazing. Being a well-known rapist and demented pathological liar isn’t disqualifying from one of the most powerful positions in the world.

It was astounding a decade ago. Now it’s . . . well, whatever this is.

EtherWhack@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 213d

Working around a few of them, the biggest factor I can tell is that they've been sheltered and groomed their whole life to think that way. Anything else would just seem foreign. (Like trying to convince a Christian that Jesus wasn't white, if he was ever real)

Since a lot of these beliefs are so ingrained into their psyche, an existential crisis, like what he may be experiencing, is likely one of the few things that can work.

paequ2@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 213d (2 replies)

I cannot believe anyone is stupid enough to buy it

I know some very smart engineers that totally bought into his stupid lies. Like. Wtf. How can they be methodical in gathering facts for debugging software bugs, but then also completely fail to think for 2 seconds about any trump claims.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 213d

Because his lies target emotions not intelligence, and a lot of engineers have absolutely dogshit emotional intelligence. If it "feels" right enough they don't bother to notice that it's prima fascia ludicrous

Jhex@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 213d

Triumph@fedia.io · 6 pts · 213d (1 reply)

We've got a family of psychopaths loving below us, from some Eastern European country. They'll bang on their ceiling if we move around after 9 pm. He tried to actually prohibit it, but I told him no, not politely. My landlord seems to hate them, too. They were trying to get his attention on the sidewalk a while back, and he barked at them "I told you that I don't want to hear from you unless your place is on fire!" He likes us, though.

But ever since Trump took office again, and ICE started rounding people up, these people have been SILENT. No banging on the ceiling , no dirty looks, no monopolizing the courtyard, etc.

I'm pretty sure they're just flying under the radar, knowing that we could make their lives miserable with one phone call. I wouldn't do it, but if the tables were turned, I have no doubt that they would dime us out in a heartbeat.

Lacking empathy ?

"In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think 1 have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It's the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.Evil. I think. is the absence of empathy."

  • Captain G. M. Gilbert, Army psychologist

"The death of human empathy is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism. [...1 This loss of empathy laid the groundwork for some of humanity's darkest moments. " - Hannah Arendt

captainlezbian@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 213d (1 reply)

I really can't sufficiently express how frustrating it was to say this as I watched my culture move away from empathy and to be dismissed as alarmist at best and with mockery more commonly. I wish now as then that I knew a way to convince people to display empathy and act in good faith

bagsy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 213d

I feel the same. I dont see a path forward without a huge catalyzing event (which is almost certainly not going to involve puppies and rainbows).

It took the right wing 50 years of dedicated, hard work to align all the stars and get their men into the right offices all at the same time in order to dismantle so much of our government. Without a huge catalyst, I fear its going to take the left 50 years to swing things back the other way. We might have to live through decades of shit like Iran, North Korea, or Russia before it swings back the other way.

It's always fine until it is effecting them personally.

Poor war criminal.
This is the thanks he gets for being in the imperial terrorist army?

Fascism isn't funny regardless of its victims.

Sunflier@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 213d

No, but its funny seeing when the fascists step on a rake

Well, Mr. Veteran, welcome to my world.

I voted for Barack Obama with a ton of hope, thinking there's be massive change and, seeing as how he had a supermajority for a time, we'd get everything he promised.

All we got was more war, more torture/fascism, and more expensive health care. Even when Ferguson gave him a perfect excuse for more federal oversight over police, he gave them more tanks. When Sandy Hook gave him a perfect excuse to push for gun control, all he offered were thoughts and prayers.

At least now I know that my vote doesn't matter for shit outside of my local community. (And you should 100% vote in every single local election.) If your candidate of choice is a Democrat or a Republican, they are probably lying to you. (Though Kamala Harris saying publicly that she wouldn't change anything Biden had done was a rare moment of truth, I think.)

And judging by the number of voters who just stayed home in 2024 and 2025, seems like I'm not the only one who's figured out how pointless voting has become.

He literally subsidized and reduced the cost of insurance (the importance of which is just now hitting Republicans now that it has gone away and premiums are being hiked, and he killed Osama. Who started the endless wars? Why was the endless wars so expansive when there was intelligence that Osama was elsewhere and was killed elsewhere?

Only temporarily. In reality what he did was implement a Republican health care system that only promises access if you can absorb the price gouging, and he had the power to nationalize our health care system.

I don't give a fuck about Osama. Two-plus decades of forever war and tens of trillions of dollars weren't worth it, and that's particularly true in light of the cuts to the social safety net in the US that have been occurring since Clinton. Further, it doesn't matter who started the forever wars, because Obama made the affirmative choice to adopt them as his policy.

You must be young.

FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 213d

No, just practical.

I was one of the scant few in the US who opposed war in fall of 2001, and one of the first to refuse to stand up for the national anthem, which at the Mizzou/Texas game that fall got you about a dozen death threats from your fellow fans.

Turns out, history proved I was right not to believe the bullshit that the Dubya admin was telling us, and the people like yourself who bought it were not only wrong, but you put us into such a mountain of debt that the US will never recover.

He passed the shittiest conservative version of health care reform under the guise of bi-partisanship.

It was not what our nation needed. He could have rammed through a much better compromise, but he didn't. Then he somehow let the conservatives steal the narrative and turn their idea into "Obamacare". It was just stupid.

He got the Noble Peace Prize and then proceeded to bomb the Middle East 26,000 times.

The only good about Obama was his speeches. It is night and day trying to compare him to the ramblings of President shits his pants.
