If you are boycotting "America", does that include "American culture"?

What do you boycott? e.g. games, music, shows, food

American Culture is Common Culture at this point...

For years, the United States has benefited most from globalization. They either don't admit it or don't realize it.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 208d (1 reply)

This American does. Being the only country not bombed to hell in WWII is a great way to fall ass backwards into hegemony.

eldavi@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 56d

a bigger measure is not being bombed in the last 50 years. lol

I'm from Russia, so I don't need to boycott American corporations myself, American corporations boycott me themselves. :D
It's a joke.

But in reality, I just try to minimize my purchases from multi-billion dollar corporations whenever possible. I prefer buying indie, open-source or custom. Nothing about culture. As others have already said, nowadays American culture is mostly common culture. Sometimes I think about buying a Chinese CPU or GPU. And in general, I have a pretty limited budget.

They are still on sale and very cheap in price, but the RAM for them has already gone up in price. Yes it was very good deal for it's money, I have one. Usually I prefer something Coreboot capable, but thats just was very cheap.

spionspion@lemmy.ml · 20 pts · 208d

Yes. It will include american culture. Im starting to "attack" businesses that push american culture. This includes cinemas.

American media told me for decades that the USA is awesome and the people are heroic do-gooders.

Turns out is was always White supremacy.

Fuck the US. Fuck US americans.

Pechente@feddit.org · 20 pts · 208d

I‘m not boycotting US media since I‘m way too much of a fan of some TV shows or movies they make. That said, I made sure not to pay any money for it which I originally started doing when streaming first enshittified.

If I ever feel they’re altering the content as to avoid upsetting the administration, I might move away from US media.

Thorry@feddit.org · 19 pts · 208d (10 replies)

I'm really trying, but it's so hard. So much turns out to be American if you look closely. It looks like a local company, which on closer inspection is owned by a parent company, which is owned by some sort of group entity, which is owned by big US Corp.

Just today I bought some chips/crisps (flat crunchy potato product), they were on promotion and my monkey brain said: "Yes tasty! Buy buy, buy now, eat later, tasty!". It wasn't till I was home I looked it up and jup, it's ultimately owned by PepsiCo. Fuck...

Getting rid of all the digital services that are American or run on American owned infrastructure is hard as well. Even local services often use AWS or Azure. And I found it's often pretty hard to find that out without actually getting the services, which is exhausting.

For some things it's morally hard as well. I've been supporting a content creator for years now. He has a small community and we like to chat on Discord a lot. He lives in the US and streams on Twitch and YouTube. I would rather not use Twitch and YouTube or support him using PayPal for example. On the other hand, he's a good dude, he didn't vote for this shit. I consider him a digital friend and actually met him once. I'm not sure what to do, I've got very mixed feelings about it.

You don't have to cut ties with american people just because their president is an ass to the world

chobeat@lemmy.ml · 8 pts · 207d (7 replies)

We cut ties with American people because they are annoying, puritanical and self-entitled.

I know this is a hot take but this would actually just be racism if it weren't for everyone globally thinking it is funny and warranted to dunk on americans when conveinant.

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 1 pts · 56d (3 replies)

"American" is a race now?

confuser@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 55d (2 replies)

Americans are a people in a country, you know, the ones people like to dunk on.

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 1 pts · 55d (1 reply)

So they're not a race is what you're saying. So dunking on them is not racism.

I know that it's an American pastime to try and find their victim status, but you have to at least TRY to get the terminology right, dude!

confuser@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 55d

I suggest reading more carefully

chobeat@lemmy.ml · 0 pts · 207d

We don't need to involve racism, an American pseudo-science, to consider Americans barbarians. That's what an American would do: to reduce everything about race when it has nothing to do with it.

Also, it's white guilt, we all know American liberals and leftists enjoy this stuff.

Damage@feddit.it · 7 pts · 208d

That doesn't seem to be what they're talking about

BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 208d

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. I cut netflix and will not watch the end of Stranger Things, although I watched the first four seasons. Incidentally-not-coincidentally also because of Zionism on this one. Nor Avatar 3 currently in theatres while I saw the premieres of the first two. I operated a paradigm shift in my mind: despite all the good people in the US, fuck the American way of life forever. I am moving back to Korean polars for entertainment.

Edit: I will cherish my Jeff Buckley discography for life, but he's long gone so there's nothing new to boycott.

j5906@feddit.org · 14 pts · 208d

Not even trying but I dont really play games and dont really wach shows or movies, every other food >> american "food" and my music is 95% european (rest random, mostly south american) because the techno/trance here is way better

chobeat@lemmy.ml · 13 pts · 208d (4 replies)

Include anche la lingua inglese. Da adesso su Lemmy si parla solo Italiano.

Damage@feddit.it · 5 pts · 208d

Si, ma di quale regione?

bobo1900@startrek.website · 5 pts · 208d (1 reply)

Bring back latin as the lingua franca

GiorgioPerlasca@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 207d

Or Spanish. A lot of people can speak Spanish.

GiorgioPerlasca@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 207d

Forse, ha più senso lo spagnolo, per il numero di persone che lo parlano.

anistorian@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 208d

Mainly groceries. Games I almost exclusively buy second hand and media I… find…

folaht@lemmy.ml · 10 pts · 208d

If Netflix, KFC and MacDonalds is "culture", then yes.

notsosure@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 208d

Yes, I’m boycotting across the board. It ain’t easy!

dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 208d

probably the most directly helpful boycott is one that ensures money is denied to US companies so they are motivated to lobby and change things to protect their bottom line (as a last resort of course, and maybe not at all)

cultural boycott is more extreme and less directly important to bringing about immediate political change, but is nonetheless probably an important part of bringing about rejection of US hegemony and dominance, so it's not a bad approach in addition to denying the US your money

mub@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 208d (2 replies)

America has so much to be proud of, and the current shit show the US government is right now should not be allowed to taint the great, music, art, or culture Americans have created. It is just a shame so much of what comes out of the US these days, and most western nations to be fair, is over processed landfill.

I'm hopeful for change, I just worry about my patience for it.

Xtallll@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 208d (1 reply)

America has given the world such cultural greats as: Jim Carrey, Seth Rogen, Ryan Reynolds, Alanis Morissette, Drake, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Gosling, the Barenaked Ladies, Sum 41, and Rush.

Delphia@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 207d

I saw what you did there, Eh.

GiorgioPerlasca@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 208d

Why would anyone boycott Native clothes, songs and dances?

Cherry@piefed.social · 5 pts · 208d

In terms of tv movies etc moving it’s gonna be hard to make a lot look credible. The mask has slipped and we have now seen the true psyche of many. I watched the boys a few years ago. It seemed silly at the time.

hoagecko@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 208d

While I'm not in favor of boycotting culture, I do feel like boycotting products and services that incorporate it.

So I try to buy boycotted cultural products secondhand whenever possible.

This way, I can legally obtain culture, but it prevents American companies from making any additional profits. (Naturally, I avoid using Amazon[.]com when making these purchases.)

The problem then arises when an American artist performs in the country where I live.

Naturally, experiential entertainment cannot be recorded, meaning it cannot be purchased secondhand. This issue determines whether a boycott is feasible based on how individual artists respond to corruption in the United States.

Separately, I also try to avoid cultural dependency on social media platforms such as YouTube and x[.]com by prioritizing domestic alternatives (such as Nico Nico Douga and mixi2).

When I travel I sometimes get sad seeing how far Western culture as come and changed societies, feels like the McWorld has won (Even as someone who aligns very much with that culture). Would be hypocritical to judge them though

I love Weimar America as much as I love Weimar Germany. ICE can have jazz, rock’n’roll, the beat poets, David Lynch, Prince, Bikini Kill, Calvin & Hobbes, etc. when they take them from my cold, dead fingers

Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 207d

I will never ever travel there.
My only travel to the US will be done using GTA and Cyberpunk2077. Don't need more.

manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 207d (1 reply)

US americans don't have culture, the people and nations they oppress do, capitalists then comodify and export that

either way, while usa dominates english language entertainment, I don't pay for it anything I consume, and I'm exploring more non english language entertainment

wuphysics87@lemmy.ml · 0 pts · 207d

Don't have culture? What about Elvis?

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 2 pts · 56d

I boycott economically. So I'll eat a hamburger, but not one from McDonald's, et al. I'm not even sure what boycotting a culture even means, nor what it would entail and/or accomplish.

So I don't buy anything that winds up lining the pockets of Americans. That's my boycott. This means that, for example, my next smartphone will not be running iOS or Android. It means I don't go to American chain restaurants or buy brands owned by American companies (even, perhaps especially, if they claim, like a certain famous brand of ketchup in Canada does with its tomatoes, to source the raw materials in the host country). It means that I will not pay to see an American movie, nor to listen to the music of an American band.

I generally try to avoid American, but I'm not so strict about it that I check the origin on the games I play (most of the time you can't find that out anyway). I also buy them on Steam anyway, because Linux support.

I've already swapped out basically everything American of mine, but as time goes on I've been thinking of narrowing my target. The companies I'm mainly focussed on are below:

  • Amazon
  • Tesla
  • Microsoft
  • Apple
  • Google
  • Facebook
  • Netflix
  • Disney
  • Boeing
  • The gun companies
  • The car companies
  • The computer chip companies
  • Visa/Mastercard (if that were possible)
  • The banks (if they even exist in your country)
  • Exxon/Chevron (I'm dubious on promoting a local community oil industry though)

I still use American streaming services (currently Amazon Prime) but I do the thing where you subscribe for 1 month and then unsubscribe for 2 years.

The reason I'm boycotting is to undermine America's power. I don't think boycotting indie games made in America does that. It would weaken their currency but the effects are marginal. The real impact comes from buying alternatives until they get to a point where they can compete, and in the arts America already has that competition.

mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 207d

I tried to not buy or encourage the awareness of american products in any form, unless the creator of that product is somebody that I wish to support and the product is good.

so yes, I will try to not spread the word of anything american, including culture topics, in an attempt to avoid promoting any spread of americanism

if I am thinking about consuming american content, I will obtain it via free means and not promote it, merely consume it quietly by myself

edit: I also tried to buy things at work through the Canadian supply chain as much as possible. not always possible, but I'm doing what I can

also I really can't see when I will ever return to the US. I think they would have to burn down the current system and start fresh for me to consider it. there's nowhere in the US that I need to travel where I couldn't travel within my country or to another country instead

Nighed@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 55d

I went to an American themed BBQ place a few weeks ago and thought about this. It's not a chain, it's a single place owned (I assume) by an American immigrant.

I should therefore support them as they have left America. (And it was really good! The soft drinks were weird though)

KnightOfOldEmpire@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 207d

As much as I can, but of course that doesn't mean there's been a complete severance.* It was easy to not consider any of the American car manufacturers or Apple products, but there are many treats from the vending machine that are available, I bought some electronics (GPU, handheld, probably SteamMachine or SteamDeck in the future) so there's still room and not all merchandise or services are easily replaceable.

As for the culture, I follow some American influencers and there are some TV shows worthy of seeing (Dune and Andor come to mind). However in my case the American influence and their projected image has been waning ever since their attack on Iraq.

*I have no delusion that this is making a change in a financial sense, it's simply a matter that I can't support their acts.

Balldowern@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 207d

Not sure if I'm boycotting culture or corporations.

I rarely watch any new movies or TV shows. I only pay for YouTube premium. I've a Korean made phone. I've started going out to Mexican, Vietnamese, Indian & Chinese restaurants more since cutting meat from my diet.

HubertManne@piefed.social · -3 pts · 208d

I don't see why someone would boycott nerd things from america or hippie things or such but like I could totally see boycotting stuff from the south and other conservative areas like country western music and certainly the flag or any other nationalistic shit.
