Trump: ‘We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not’

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/09/trump-greenland-military-denmark-nato.html

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/41391186

Donald Trump said Friday his administration will take action on Greenland “whether they like it or not,” further escalating his rhetoric as he pushes to acquire the Danish territory for the U.S.

The comments came during a meeting with oil executives to discuss the prospect of doing business in Venezuela. Less than a week earlier, the U.S. military invaded the oil-rich South American nation and captured its leader, Nicolás Maduro.

Denmark and its European allies in NATO – the military alliance co-founded by the U.S. – have pushed back, reiterating that Greenland is not for sale. But the Trump administration nevertheless says it is currently weighing a range of options on Greenland, including utilizing the U.S. military or cutting a deal to purchase it from Denmark.

Either Europe's politicians are still deluding themselves that the USA could be an ally against Russia, or it's a case of no one wanting to move first and be the first the USA targets for economic and social destruction.

hitmyspot@aussie.zone · 20 pts · 210d (4 replies)

Which is the point of a united Europe. They should work together.

krashmo@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 210d (3 replies)

hitmyspot@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 209d (2 replies)

When tariffs came in, I was hopeful they realised, finally, that they were dealing with a madman. However, they still negotiate as if he's a rational actor. Express concern etc. Just like the Dems in the USA. He pays no heed to their comments or concerns. He only responds to power.

Tariff the shit out of USA tech. Stop buying USA weapons. Start allowing Ukraine to attack inside Russia. Cut off their supply of precious metals by working with Australia and Denmark (Greenland).

Show them you mean business by reducing tariffs on china in return for Chinese concessions. Start really penalisong any European or American companies that still do business in Russia.

Its mind boggling that they are doing practically nothing concrete.

WanderingThoughts@europe.pub · 14 pts · 209d

EU politicians did switch to a "don't feed the troll" stance on Trump. Flattery backfires because he sees that as weak. Taking sudden action works as a provocation in him. Best case they're waiting him out and preparing quietly in the background.

shalafi@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 210d

If Europe had fought Russia over the Ukraine, this wouldn't be on the table. It's clear to the world Europe won't fight, even to defend their own backyard, so here we are.

To be clear, I fucking hate it. I have been screaming for Europe to fight back since day one, all while it was clear America was half-assing the fight. But they didn't, the fascists gauged the reaction, now they feel free to strike.

Many have outlined Trump's mafia-style speech. Like the truly wealthy, the mafia is a group he admires, was never allowed into, wants to imitate.

It's so clear I want to scream. The US watched the man make a fool of himself in the 80s and 90s, he was tabloid trash. Even The Apprentice made fun of his bombastic nature, but apparently neither Trump not his fans were in on the joke.

SabinStargem@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 208d

Unlike ICE, the mafia has recruiting standards.

WoodScientist@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 210d (2 replies)

How many children in the 1980s were acutely aware of Trump? I imagine very few. You're talking about people who were in their twenties and older in the 1980s. And if you were 25 in 1984, you were 65 in 2024. A lot of the electorate is simply too young to remember Trump in his 1980s incarnation. And while older voters do vote at higher rates, the difference is massively overblown.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 209d

You just described me. I've known he was an insufferable putz since the 80s. By the 90s, I was seeing articles in the NY Times about money laundering for the Russian Mob. I was shocked they'd give him a reality show, but that's bar is extremely low.

Looking back from the perspective of a Millennial or younger, I realize that the first time they really saw him was when Mark Burnett decided to polish his image on The Apprentice, and make him campaign ready. They only saw a carefully crafted hologram of him, and his re-brand worked.

I've had people tell me that I'm stupid for not knowing that Trump has always been the "King of NYC," and they still LOVE him there. I laugh whenever I hear that, because I'm a New Yorker-in-law, and I've been visiting and living in NYC for decades, and I know first hand that NYers despise him intensely. I've never heard a real New Yorker say anything good about him. New Yorkers have ALWAYS had a special, deeply-rooted hatred for him.

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 209d

He was a showman in The Apprentice, isn't that enough to disqualify him as the unserious, self-centered and money hungry person he is? Nvm rapey, pedo, racist, etc etc. America is just a country of stupid lost souls, that's all.

ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 209d

The EU is a mob boss' wife (except we also have blood on our hands, we take part of American excursions cause we're team West), European countries are just vassal states and our so-called leaders are shameless whores. I know, I live here, shit's sad. And, while we aren't as culturally primed to worship violence, there are still too many "MAGAs" (white supremacists) over here still.

Peppycito@sh.itjust.works · 31 pts · 210d (1 reply)

At this point the Epstein files are a distraction from all the fascism.

shalafi@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 210d

Makes one wonder how much they planned this out. The Epstein files could picture Trump balls deep in a 13-yo girl, nothing would happen.

The fascists have larger goals in mind. They're speed running WWII, trying to avoid the Nazi's mistakes, so good so far. But like the Nazis, giddy over the lack of internal or external resistance, they're biting off more than then can chew, way too fast. Cheap gasoline at the pumps only goes so far. They're not energizing the whole economy like the Nazis did, people aren't feeling it.

No idea what comes next. But the American Empire is over. Our economy is just too large to fall over quickly. But AI gives us hope! (Of crashing...) The Buffett Index is higher than either during the Great Depression or the 2008 recession. We have 200%+ more fake money in the stock market than our GDP. The cost will be staggering.

Can all y'all grow potatoes? I can, but I'm not very good at it.

It has more people than 2 other states, yet has no Senators or Reps.

"If Trump takes Greenland or any other country's land, I'll give it back

That's not really what happens, from what I've observed. I think once a policy has been woven into action, it's difficult to unpick all of the new dependencies and go backwards without wasting a tremendous amount pf resources. Most of what Trump has been doing is probably here to stay. The Democrats are super neutral on everything. there's almost nobody pushing to the left.

Trumps whole thing is throwing grenades and leaving others to deal with a fallout. No matter what happens with Greenland he's irreprably damaged the USs alliances everywhere. The possibility the US is fickle enough to invade an ally and then undo it in 4 years is insane. Any successor to trump that wants to backtrack needs to sort out the rampant unchecked power of the office, not to mention the lack of accountability at so many levels of the government.

you can tell within the last few months he has been low on energy and he looks even more like hell. My grandmother passed away in 2008 from a series of multiple strokes with each one she became more and more slower than her brain slowly turned to mush, and she was unable to form a sentence and when she did, she was in her own little world. I see the same thing happening with Trump. Hopefully he is not much time left for him in this world. We can only hope.

The West doesn't believe in God, and if we did, we wouldn't be as corrupt and immoral to collectively put men like Trump and every single one of his also bloodthirsty predecessors in power. Trump is nothing but the naked, shameless truth of the American empire and maybe the West at large. Also, he's just a sign of the times not the one responsible for it (end of American hegemony, transition of power into the hands of oligarchs/anational groups of interest) and, as such, part of the world is more than okay with it. Don't you think every victim of America would rather they focus their violence on their own citizens instead of the rest of the world as usual? 🤷

I can't see Australia joining in a fight against USA when China is an ever present issue and they're our only hope if China decides they'd rather have Australia.

Similarly, I can't see UK actually joining a military action against USA.

I can't see South America going to bat for European insterests, even if it's against USA, similar for Africa.

Middle East will watch laughing.

Which really leaves mainland Europe, which will probably splinter along the lines of whether Germany or France gets to be the leader of the Coalition.

shalafi@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 210d

Mainland Europe stood aside as Putin invaded their backyard. This inaction was not lost on the American fascists. See where we're at today?

(And I am not excusing America's lack of action, but FFS, we can't do it ALL. And certainly can't now...)

lightsoflife@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 209d

Well difficult to answer, an invasion of Denmark (pretty much what this would be) would change a lot and wouldn’t be the end of it. My money would be on Germany and France too, with UK being a deciding factor.
