Then there is Australia. Naming a swimming pool after a Prime Minister that drowned.

Most people are named after buildings. The oldest one is thousands of years old so actually everyone alive is named after a building.

Yeah? Well I was named after the Big Bang, SUCKERS.

bearboiblake@pawb.social · 33 pts · 205d (4 replies)

Most buildings named after people are done because they donated money for it. In most cases it's still kinda cringe.

Boiglenoight@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 205d (3 replies)

Funding for buildings is sometimes driven by recurring donations in exchange for someone’s name on the building. These funds pay for deferred maintenance and renovations.

bearboiblake@pawb.social · 3 pts · 205d (2 replies)

yeah it's cool that buildings are maintained and so on, but it's cringe to pay a bunch of money for clout. rich people basically view botting IRL

Boiglenoight@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 205d (1 reply)

It’s similar to Kickstarter, where a certain level will get your name in the credits.

bearboiblake@pawb.social · 4 pts · 205d

Naming things after people frequently backfires. The person later turns out to be politically divisive, or a nazi, or a rapist, or a pedophile, or some other awful thing.

I’m so tired of seeing “XYZ memorial highway” signs everywhere. And schools should just stick to naming themselves after the region (north/south/east/west), or going by PS numbers. It’s all just asking for trouble and a waste of taxpayer money.

fonix232@fedia.io · 32 pts · 206d (4 replies)

See the perfect example: Star Trek Discovery namedropping Musk in-between the Wright brothers and Zephram Cochrane (in-universe inventor of the warp drive), and even having a high school named after him.

This, mind you, happened right before his "pedo guy" comments - the episode aired in early October 2017, whereas Musk made the comment on 15 July 2018. So within a year Musk managed to kill off the respect of a large chunk of nerds just by letting his inner Nazi appear for a moment.

RustyShackleford@piefed.social · 12 pts · 205d

In my mind, I rewrote the episode’s script. Essentially, Elon laid himself down feet first in front of a steam roller, after giving away everything he owned to fund Universal Healthcare.

So, they named a local elementary school after him, as it was literally the very least they could do after he was squeezed out like a tube of toothpaste.

TheOctonaut@mander.xyz · 10 pts · 206d (2 replies)

It's fascinating to think that if Elon hadn't spent so much time hanging around with former sexpats such that the word Thailand meant paedophile tourism to him, America could have a functioning democracy right now.

fonix232@fedia.io · 17 pts · 206d (1 reply)

Nah, the issue is much deeper rooted. fElonia has been a white supremacist moron for a VERY long time.

When he sold his first company, Zip2, to Compaq, the latter said that the code was practically unusable.

Later on, he funded the formation of the original X dot com, an online bank, where he fired all other founders within the first half year due to "creative differences", basically stole their work, and within a year they merged with Peter Thiel's PayPal/Confinity. A few months later Musk got ousted as CEO because of mismanagement. Go figure.

Half his ventures since have been abject and utter failures, which would've ruined anyone else financially, but because he's got his rich emerald mine owner daddy, he always had a nice little trust fund to fall back on.

And his views also go back to his father, who was a fervent supporter of the Apartheid state, and is essentially a white supremacist (also an elitist piece of shit). Don't even get me started about mummy dearest, to whom muskie had to run just so he didn't have to fight Zuckerberg...

At SpaceX there literally used to be a "Musk management department", solely tasked with giving the imbecile random tasks that don't affect mission critical stuff, and making sure he's not saying absolutely moronic BS in interviews.

He's basically stuck on the mental and emotional level of a 13yo teen who just hit puberty, combined with that Cybertruck shaped body, more gender affirming care than your average post-op trans person, and a botched micropenis he can't even use. Him going full on alt-right wasn't a question of if, but when.

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 205d

At SpaceX there literally used to be a “Musk management department”, solely tasked with giving the imbecile random tasks that don’t affect mission critical stuff, and making sure he’s not saying absolutely moronic BS in interviews.

Kinda still is that way. Just that through graft he scammed NASA into giving that "Musk management department" billions of dollars to build 11 massive rockets which have all failed. But they do a lot of spin to claim half of them were successful.

The SpaceX that operates from Cape Canaveral still continues to do successful launches though. Now that Musk has burned through all of the money he scammed from NASA we'll have to see if he starts pulling money from the wing of SpaceX that can actually launch things into space his stupid "Starship" project.

I'm happy to use it to memorialize someone who is long dead (like, at least a century; long enough that we can be pretty sure what kind of person they were in life), or to mark a notable feature or plant or animal in the region. Even an institution (College Park, Museum Way, High School Rd). Not everything has to be purely functional. And if the local government has to pay for the signs to be printed anyway...

reddig33@lemmy.world · -4 pts · 206d (3 replies)

Do you realize how many public schools, military bases, and other crap had to be renamed a few years ago because they were named after Confederates? All that signage and letterhead doesn’t just pay for itself.

ilinamorato@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 206d

We knew about them while they were still walking the earth. That was a willful choice, and the change represented a change in values.

Yes, signage costs money. But it also has to be replaced from time to time anyway. I don't think there are any schools changing their name annually; they probably print new signs up memorializing tournament wins often enough that they can just get it added to an existing print run.

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 205d (1 reply)

Ah yes, Stalin elementary school, right down the street from Pol Pot high school, next door to Idi Amin College.

Maybe they shouldn't have named places after enemies of state in the first place.

“I'm happy to use it to memorialize someone who is long dead (like, at least a century; long enough that we can be pretty sure what kind of person they were in life)”

Fun fact, the hollywood walk of fame is a bought honor, you pay for it, you get it. It's not given out based on some achievement criteria

MrFinnbean@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 205d (3 replies)

Yes and no.

You need to have +5 years of history in entertaiment business and/or in community work and somebody else needs to nominate you. Then if the commitee acepts you and you pay the sponsor fee you get the star.

But yeah. If you have lots of money and friends in right places you can pretty much buy it, but its not like any bluecollar worker can just take a loan and buy one for themself without any merit.

Its not really that different than how people get wings in hospitals or libraries named after them. Except Hollywood star does not benefit normal people in any way.

GuyFawkes@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 205d (2 replies)

Another fun fact is that once a star is there it’s there - no mechanism to get it removed.

MBech@feddit.dk · 2 pts · 205d (1 reply)

I suppose a crowbar could lift it up, unless it's laid in concrete or something? In that case a jackhammer could probably do it fine, but if you really wanna make sure it's removed, you could drill a hole in the middle and put a bit of dynamite in and blow it apart.

FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 205d (7 replies)

That's okay.

It is mostly possible to erase a person's legacy, at least in the physical sense. Egypt almost erased a whole-ass pharaoh from history. (Akhenaten)

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 205d (2 replies)

Yeah just like how all of those Civil War Generals were erased from history for betraying their country for the sake of preserving slavery.

Let's be real. Americans are incapable of shame. As long as USA continues to exist, Trump's actions will be whitewashed and there will be statues of him made in the future.

FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 205d (1 reply)

Yeah just like how all of those Civil War Generals were erased from history for betraying their country for the sake of preserving slavery.

This is nowhere near an appropriate comparison to Akhenaten.

Let’s be real. Americans are incapable of shame.

The 2025 elections, where every Donald-won district from 2024 flipped, is empirical evidence to the contrary. It seems that people were on-board for a mass-deportation, but not for the targeting of legal immigrants and the military occupation of American cities.

But sure. It's your world and your algorithm. Think what you want.

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 205d

You think Trump has done something worse than starting a war to preserve slavery in which about a million people died?

You have fucking slave masters carved into mountains (stolen from indigenous people during a genocidal campaign) down there FFS. Being American is all about pretending the past was some glorious thing, and believing you have real principles. It's a nation founded by hypocrisy and you feel like you have to preserve the hypocrisy because somehow that's the source of freedom and equality.

Americans only really care about wealth and power, and Trump has both. They'll be carving his face into Rushmore (ignoring any protests of the indigenous people, because fuck them right?) within a few decades. This will be to express dominance over the people that don't like Trump. A few decades after that they'll be teaching kids in school how Trump was the greatest President in history because why else would they carve his face into a mountain. American history is just a tool for control, because you're unable to question it. You worship Founding Father the same way they worship Big Brother in 1984.

You're incapable of understanding of how things really work in your country because your country demands you believe in the hypocrisy it was all founded on. Everyone knows how stupid your country is just we never told you because it would be rude like telling a child Santa Claus isn't real. But now you're not an ally. Santa Claus isn't real and Founding Father was a slave owning oppressor. Whatever rights and freedoms you had came from voting (just like everywhere else) over many years, but y'all either voted for a fascist or didn't vote at all, so you're losing all of the rights and freedoms you believed a magical piece of paper written by fucking slave masters granted to you.

FerretyFever0@fedia.io · 8 pts · 206d (7 replies)

That's normally how naming things works in general tbh.

ramble81@lemmy.zip · 24 pts · 206d (3 replies)

Except a lot of rich people “donate” large sums of money and places “honor” them by naming it after them. Really they’re just paying to put their name of stuff…. which, yeah, falls under cringe.

fonix232@fedia.io · 8 pts · 206d (1 reply)

While it's true that they essentially pay to have their names added to a room/hall/floor/wing/building, don't forget that those donations tend to fund actually important research and equipment (this mostly happens to hospitals and universities or research facilities).

It's also a common occurrence for scientific research locations/institutions to name an area after an important scientist, upon their passing.

ramble81@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 205d

If it wasn’t about ego, they would donate anonymously. Then if something is named after them it should be because of their achievements/impact in their field. Not just the money. But they’re too vain for that.

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 206d

This is true, but probably a bit less so. Also, some places are called the name of the primary benefactor but they have an original name too (e.g. Carnegie Hall was originally called Music Hall)

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 206d (2 replies)

In South Australia, we had a bloke put up signs with his surname on all the real estate places he bought. Apparently the dad was okay, but the son is a complete arsehat.

fonix232@fedia.io · 12 pts · 206d (1 reply)

This tends to happen with nouveau riche - the generation that makes the initial wealth usually grows up in relative scarcity and is better due to it (learning money management and the importance of not overspending, but saving as much as one can). But they lack the skills or ability to pass this education on, the second generation is spoiled because the parents want to give their kids everything they couldn't have in their childhood, and thus that generation becomes entitled little shits who care not about money because they always seem to have enough for anything they want, let it be a new car, a new bachelor pad, or paying off the right people to get out from a DUI or drug charges.

This even tends to happen to people whom aren't even rich rich, just well off enough so that money isn't really an issue. Real estate can be one of those businesses where one can get to that level of well off.

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 205d

I agree with you and have, as someone who has known plenty of folks who are "old money" (think British landed gentry e.g. Saltburn-type folk) and they often don't realise their privilege but also don't flaunt their wealth. They never want for anything but they don't go around with a "look at me" attitude. They're often quite odd and disconnected from reality though - lacking an entire knowledge base of street smarts.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · -7 pts · 205d (9 replies)

So what? Lots of people do that. Do you think any named building on any campus has that name as a tribute?

No, somebody donated a bunch of money to that university, hospital, museum, etc. to build a building, with the specific stipulation that it will have their name on the front. If the answer is No, they'll just offer their donation to the next college. Someone will take them up on it.

1rre@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 205d (4 replies)

There's even a difference between someone paying to have their name on a new building and someone renaming something that already exists though.

Same in sports where a stadium has always been known by a name then it changes for sponsorship reason, it just doesn't feel right. If the sponsor's name was attached from opening then it's fine.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 205d (3 replies)

Valid. Ill take it one step farther, and say that Trump's actions were worse than even changing the name. The Kennedy Center is a tribute to Kennedy in the same way as the Lincoln Memorial or the Washington Monument. Making it the Trump-Lincoln Memorial or the Trump-Washington Monument would be a ludicrous idea, so why is making it the Trump-Kennedy Center acceptable?

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 205d (2 replies)

Nobody thinks that the renaming to Trump-Kennedy Centre is acceptable. Hence many of the acts booked in have cancelled upcoming shows.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 205d (1 reply)

Trump and MAGA do. And they think WE are the problem.

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 205d

They do, but they are still the minority. Another minority care (the normal people) and all those who don't want to be associated with anything Trump/Maga - this includes the artists. The majority don't care either way and are apathetic. Honestly, they're half the problem too who either don't vote or don't think about it and think life just happens around them and they have no say - they're the disillusioned and need bringing back into the fold and made to realise they can help fix the mess and that they have a say .

bbboi@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 205d (3 replies)

What exactly is your point?

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · -1 pts · 205d (2 replies)

My point is that rich people pay to put their own names on stuff all the time. They clearly see that issue differently. They aren't waiting around for someome to honor them, they are proactive, and honor themselves.

Mantzy81@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 205d

Anyone honouring themselves is cringe. It's like putting your own name forward for an award. If someone doesn't do it for you, you're not a winner

bbboi@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 205d

people pay to put their own names on stuff all the time

Yes. That's what this post was about. I guess a more pointed question is "what did your comment contribute to the conversation?".
