Is this because the TMNTs liked pizza or, just because?

Godort@lemmy.ca · 71 pts · 122d (3 replies)

Yes

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 122d (1 reply)

Also I love pizza. Also I love the Ninja Turtles. It's like some kind of poetry? I need to check Etsy.

Do you happen to also love DIY?

Lidl, or rather Parkside have released power tool pizza cutters

Is the metal circle meant to represent pizza?

dalekcaan@feddit.nl · 13 pts · 121d (7 replies)

They're pizza cutters. Not sure if you've seen them before, but they're metal disks with a sharp(ish) edge that spin freely. You use it by pressing it into the pizza then pushing forward so the disk rotates and cuts through the pizza. Not as easy or precise as using, say, a mezzaluna, but much more compact and easy to fit in a drawer. This is what a more typical design looks like:

Picture of a pizza cutter

stray@pawb.social · 7 pts · 121d

I love that the name "mezzaluna" is so descriptive that I immediately knew what tool you meant despite having never encountered the word in my life. Nicely done, Italy.

Dojan@pawb.social · 3 pts · 121d

Oh, I have seen those but never given them much thought. Thanks!

And I'll add "yeah, no shit"

SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 16 pts · 121d (2 replies)

For other people dumb and confused like me: they're pizza cutters.

AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 121d

Specifically a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed set of pizza cutters, which makes them totally tubular.

glitchdx@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 121d

I was very confused, brain couldn't parse what the disks were. Now that I understand, I get it. Fuck yeah.

KoboldCoterie@pawb.social · 16 pts · 122d (8 replies)

I would unironically buy and use the sai one. That looks like a fairly functional design.

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 122d (4 replies)

I'd really need the full set, but I think Donatello's would be revolutionary. Even pressure on both sides. It'd be comfortable and efficient.

KoboldCoterie@pawb.social · 6 pts · 122d (2 replies)

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable using that unless it had a small finger guard added on either side of the blade. Even with the wrapped rope for grip, it'd only take one slip to cut your fingers pretty good.

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 122d (1 reply)

The Turtles only had three fingers and they managed just fine.

KoboldCoterie@pawb.social · 6 pts · 122d

I don't recall Donatello's staff having a spinning blade in the middle of it, though!

(Alternately, maybe they originally had 5 fingers, and after losing two each they collectively decided to remove the pizza cutter blades from their weapons.)

TheLowestStone@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 121d

At that size, you're better off using a mezzaluna.

ThePantser@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 122d (1 reply)

Yes but it looks like its welded and can't spin so it will be a pain. Only one that looks like it spins easily is the staff.

Cataphract@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 121d

can't believe I had to scroll down so far to see the only real answer for the best/most effective one. All the other ones are just spot welded on and the disc won't spin. Only downside is if you're trying to cut something like a deep dish but at that depth all of them will have issues.

Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 122d

Seems like the prongs might get in the way, I'd opt for the tanto one but use it point-down I think.

Legit thought hell yeah before even reading the text.

Motherfuckers got my number.

LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz · 9 pts · 121d (6 replies)

The "staff" one is totally impracticable. if the nunchucks have welded chains they would work great but if not...yeah im for sure cutting my self swinging those around. Still...Hell yeah.

Edit- meant to say "Impractical" but spell check chose "impracticable", and now impractical doesn't even make sense in my head anymore. All i can say is impracticable... Ill never spell impractical right the first time again.

DrSteveBrule@mander.xyz · 11 pts · 121d (2 replies)

The staff one makes sense to me. When I worked at pizza hut instead of a pizza cutter, we had a big curved knife with a handle that protruded both sides. It was really nice to visually line up a perfectly through-the-center cut. The staff knife on the pic is actually very similar, just with a spinning blade.

LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 121d (1 reply)

Ive used the big curved knife at pizza stores. (curvedswords2.meme) I dont think this staff thing would work quite as well. No clearance. Youd be fisting the pizza as you cut unless you're super steady.

DrSteveBrule@mander.xyz · 5 pts · 121d

Lmao I can see that. Cheesy knuckles all day!

OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 121d

I have a (non-TMNT-themed) pizza cutter with a handle which is like a traditional wheel cutter handle, but also splits down the center and becomes more like the two-handed “staff” one. It works very well, because it transfers the pressure on the blade from a forward 45° angle to straight-down 90°. Great for thick/hard crust.

The handle splits above the blade rather than at the center of the wheel, so there’s a bit more clearance. But still I wouldn’t say it’s an impractical design. As long as you have slim hands and keep it level.

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 121d

The sai one looks practically unusable, too. Thinking of the usual angle I use to cut pizza, the crossguards will get in the way.

I see this as a great taste, horrible execution. Especially because the one executed the best would have been better as a katana rocker cutter (which the staff isn't, as a stick with a cutter in the middle is completely different from a single curved blade, to disagree with the other commenter).

A good set would have been katana rocker cutter, sai cutter (with a longer center blade and a smaller circular blade), a staff dough roller, and I guess nunchuck grain thrasher or maybe parmesan cheese and crushed pepper shakers. But I've always been a function over form kinda guy and hate artistic choices that completely ignore function.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 121d

I don't mind if you drag your knuckles through the cheese.

Ew. That's not a sai. (Or katana or bo staff) Donatello would affix a pizza cutter to a six foot pole like a real man. Turtle. Turtleman.

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 121d

Initially, I thought it'd be the best, but when I really think of how it'd be to use, I think you might be right. But it's definitely not as useless as Mikey's. That thing would take years of practice, but would be the most badass to see in use, by far.

April: BUT WHO? WHAT?

MICHELANGELO: PIZZA TIME! I'VE GOT SOME PEPPERONI AN' ICE CREAM, JELLY BEAN AN' MUSHROOM, AN' MY FAVORITE, ANCHOVIES AN' PEANUT BUTTER!

April: THIS IS SERIOUSLY GROSSING ME OUT! I START OFF TO DO A STORY ABOUT SOME HIGH TECH ROBBERIES AND I END UP TALKING TO A BUNCH OF TURTLES AND THEIR PET RAT!!! WHO ARE YOU GUYS?

Splinter: PERHAPS I CAN BEST EXPLAIN!

The only thing I'm wondering about is how they can cook pizzas in the sewer without getting carbon monoxide poisoning. Or do they buy regular pizzas and add the jellybeans later?

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 121d (1 reply)

In the movie, the pizzas were very clearly delivered. Not sure about the comics.

musubibreakfast@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 121d

Now I'm wondering how they make money to buy pizzas

janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 121d
