Why do we have alcohol advertisements. We don't allow cigarettes to advertise

I’m in recovery and ever commercial is “the bold refreshing taste of uncle berry lemon twist vodka. Having a bad day? Drink this. You know you want to. Drink it Michael! please drink responably

Every ad portrays drinking as a party, and your in a pool throwing a beach ball with your friends, and your ex Chrissy finally admits she was wrong. It’s an unrealistically positive. If you drink Tito’s your father in law will finally grow close to you. It’s not Christmas without even Williams egg nog!

There is no safe amount of alcohol to drink. It is like cigarettes, entirely bad for you.

I’m not saying don’t sell it but why is every add for booze being blasted every. Especially to me because the algorithm knows I’m an alcoholic.

How is that legal?

Please drink responsibly? You’re aiming your ads at alcoholics primarily.

It’s like advertising morphine on skid row. You know what you’re doing.

Edit: for the people saying I’m America centric. I have a Texas education.what the hell is the US? Nothing is beyond our boarders. We are the only land mass. Ill add a picture in the comments.

For the people who happily explained what it’s like in thier country. Makes me feel less crazy for pointing out the problem!

It took decades of fighting to get smoking banned, and if everyone and their uncle didn't have a parent dying of lung cancer, it probably wouldn't have happened.

basically alcohol gets a pass because its a drug that has been in use since the stone age. Im a big "victimless" crimes person and I would like to see much legalized but I would like them all put into a category where its allowed at home or at licensed establishments and advertising is limited to private residences or at businesses that are in the category. I would restrict the signage for the businesses to. So the brothel, race track, casino, dispensiary, liquor store would look rather non descript from the outside but all would have controlled entry to only allow adults and inside it would likely be filled with ads for other establishments.

Cethin@lemmy.zip · 11 pts · 103d (2 replies)

I agree with everything. I want to add, a lot of drugs have been used since the stone ages. Animals, not just humans, tend to use drugs fairly commonly. It's only a modern thing to think they're purely bad.

With that said, modern drugs often remove them from their cultural context, and are in higher purities and larger quantities than are naturally available. Chewing on a coca leaf is a lot different than doing cocaine, even though they're largely the same thing (though the coca leaf has a lot of stuff that's removed in processing to make cocaine). Cultures where it's common, it doesn't cause nearly the same issues as cocaine does in other places, because they don't have the same culture around it and are sometimes getting a lot more.

I agree though; people should be allowed to do what they want. The government shouldn't be deciding it for them, and neither should advertising. They should be free from pressure either way to decide what they want to put into their body.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 5 pts · 102d (1 reply)

yeah its kinda wild that cocaine was in coke but and there is nothing about mass withdrawls when it was taken out. It was a small amount and ingested though and who knows how it was obtained form the leaf at that time. I had a convo with an indian coworker around this topic and they mentioned their grandma chewing something that was like the basis of opium and it was just normal back then.

Cethin@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 102d

Coca Cola actually had a reasonably large amount in it. I watched this video recently, which is why I thought of coca. It's a very interesting look into a culture I knew little to nothing of. https://youtu.be/n2ZHXTiM9j0

HubertManne@piefed.social · 1 pts · 103d (1 reply)

HubertManne@piefed.social · 2 pts · 103d

yeah but this should be the case with liquor stores as well. So basically the only way you should see an ad for any of the other adult activity is by being at one of the adult activities. as an aside though illinois implementation like a lot of illinois is sorta minimal. Really annoyed at the grow restrictions. Sorta hope it gets improved once they can't suck so much revenue form the surrounding states.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 101d (5 replies)

Comedy is how I cope with things. That and drinking. They don’t always combine well.

All jokes are dark. There is no joke that doesn’t Involve pain. Jokes are the way we address Hard realities in a safe way.

potustheplant@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 101d (4 replies)

That has absolutely nothing to do with the "joke" being bad, and that had no humour in it at all. You were just being a dick. Granted, there's a fine line between "dark" humour and being a dick, but you most certainly crossed it.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 101d (3 replies)

That’s where you are completely wrong

“Joke” doesn’t need to be in quotes. It’s not an opinion or grey area. If something is told as a joke it is a joke.

Your opinion of the joke doesn’t stop it from being a joke. Buy a dictionary .

“No humor at all “ it was sarcastic ghoulish humor by definition. It’s a specific classification

Dark humor doesn’t need to be in quotes all humor is dark humor. That’s what humor is.

You clearly have opinions if I want to hear them I’ll ask for them. Until then just be about your way.

potustheplant@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 100d (2 replies)

You're very confused buddy. If you post crappy "jokes" on the internet, be prepared to receive feedback on them. Hopefully next time you'll actually have something funny to say. Otherwise, "just be about your way".

Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 100d

Again jokes doesn’t need to be in quotes. Buy a dictionary. Jokes don’t have to personally funny to you to be a joke by definition. A crappy joke is still a joke.

So Id your plan is for me not to say anything you personally don’t like… my answers no.

Feel free to repeat you don’t like it until you are blue in the face, just buy a dictionary so you know what words mean.

There is also a block function . no one Is holding you here. You are choosing to not like my joke and I’m choosing to not care About your opinion. I’m not ashamed of my joke at all. I apologize if you felt offended by that’s the end of my giving a fuck about this matter.

Unfortunately for you I can write a novel Faster than you could name chapter so I have no problem responding to you forever. But you should probably know you won’t ever win.

All jokes are dark. Laughing and crying serve the same function. Knock knock?

Who’s there?

To To who?

It’s to whom actually.

Onoxk Not Jokes Are Based on the pain of appearing foolish im public.

For ten years no one’s ever shown me A joke that isn’t pain.

Closest anyone ever got was “puns Don’t involve pain” how do we as a society react to puns? With anger like Just hearing it hurt us.

Every joke ever told is about pain. places “prove me wrong” In front of my tent

If something was intend as a joke it meets the qualifications for “a joke”. If one person laughs it’s not categorized as unfunny. Someone found it funny.

It’s unfunny to you. That’s it. You are too self absorbed to see that your don’t control what is and isn’t comedy based on your feelings. Buy a dictionary.

Bit of a shot in the dark, but seems like cigarette companies have lied in front of congress / courts saying cigarettes are healthy / not bad for you and have been caught red handed in their lies.

Big alcohol hasn't ever done anything that egregious. Everyone knows its not exactly healthy to drink, and Big Alcohol doesn't seem to have ever argued that. I know there's the occasional "a glass of red wine is good for your heart" stuff, but they're also not making any attempt to deny a gallon of wine per day will probably cause cirrhosis, ya know?

DagwoodIII@piefed.social · 30 pts · 103d

Just adding. The liquor industry has been pushing the 'drink responsibly' line for decades. Back in the day they tried to get an AA member to sign on as a spokesperson but AA asked the member not to do it and they agreed.

Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 18 pts · 103d (6 replies)

Just FYI, the 1 glass a day study didn't exclude ex alcoholics, so they polluted the zero-glass-a-day group with bad health making the 1-glass-a-day look healthier in comparison.

The study has been redone and it shows that the less alcohol you consume the better it is, no exceptions.

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 4 pts · 103d (5 replies)

Yeah, in terms of individual health, I have no doubt that avoiding alcohol all together the best bet.

Personally, I subscribe to a flavor of "social lubricant" take on alcohol. That is, being a human and managing all the required social interactions and minor slights, stressors, stigmas, etc is a lot. And alcohol works to turn off some of the parts of the brain most active in social situations. That is to say that alcohol (and/or other mood altering drugs) are bad for the individual, but good for society.

Do need to caveat that take with: there's a left and a right to what's acceptable levels of intoxication. I don't think the world would be better with everyone getting outright shit faced every night, and even a glass every night might be excessive; its easy to fall prey to addiction and that's undesirable. But also, I don't think we'd be better off without alcohol all together. I think a couple glasses per week - and not drinking those glasses alone - makes for a healthy enough middle ground.

kungen@feddit.nu · 12 pts · 103d (3 replies)

alcohol .. bad for the individual, but good for society

Alcohol is ranked as society's most harmful drug, because no, for way too many people it's not just a few drinks per week in a healthy social setting. It's also one of the few drugs where you can literally die during withdrawal.

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 6 pts · 103d (2 replies)

Yup, and I think that's a symptom of how isolating modern society is (as opposed to the disease society suffers from).

I def do not advocate for drinking alone in any quantity, but I would also never advocate to remove alcohol from society. It feels reasonable to conclude that since every society that's ever had success at some level has had some form of mind altering substance (usually alcohol) that was consumed recreationally and regularly.

Rekorse@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 102d (1 reply)

You can't remove it, its too easy to make. It doesnt need to be advertised though.

DahGangalang@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 102d

Well I mean, why stop at just alcohol ads? I say we ban them all.

^^ Only kinda joking there. I do hate ads, esp those that interrupt whatever content I was involved in (TV, streaming, pop-up). Ones that just kinda set on the side are mostly okay (billboards, banner ads, those pamphlets at hotels, etc).

skulblaka@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 103d

There's a good reason we've had alcohol for almost as long as we've had civilization, and I think you hit on some key points of it here. It's a social lubricant, many important meetings and decisions of history might not have happened without a little drink to loosen some tongues.

That's not to say that it's good for you, but alcohol has been present alongside human evolution in sort of the same way that dogs have. We go waaayyyyyy way back together.

Schmoo@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 103d (2 replies)

Alcohol has also just been more prevalent in human cultures dating back to prehistory. Some of the earliest evidence we have of permanent human settlements were breweries, theorized to have been built by people who still lived semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyles. That would mean that humans first started making permanent settlements and doing large-scale agriculture only to produce alcohol, and still mainly relied on hunting and gathering for their caloric needs. Other drugs / intoxicants have been used by humans for at least as long, but none have been so central to the development of civilization and culture than alcohol.

But of course they get around that by advertising their "0.0%" beers etc.

Evotech@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 103d (1 reply)

kungen@feddit.nu · 4 pts · 103d

Did you guys get rid of that "sändarlandsprincipen" or whatever it is? For beer and such, they usually still do the 0,0% shit, but there's tons of commercials for wine and liquor, which don't exactly sell alcohol-free versions...

And if it's not alcohol commercials in Sweden, it's commercials for online casinos, which is also supposed to be illegal to advertise.

zerofk@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 102d

There is no EU law forbidding alcohol advertisements. Most EU countries have a mix of local laws and self regulation, and only a few of those fully forbid it.

Fleppensteijn@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 102d

I believe advertising is allowed after certain hours in most countries. But now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen any ads for alcohol.

The only exception maybe the "buy 2 packs of cigarettes and get a beer for free" promotion, because somehow tobacco stores can still openly advertise.

lokalhorst@feddit.org · 1 pts · 101d

HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club · 12 pts · 103d

A few reasons.

First, the alcohol industry has been a lot more sensitive to being perceived as selling to kids than the tobacco industry was. Because of it, there was never the push to ban advertising and conduct a mass media effort to control teen drinking as there was teen smoking.

Second, people still remember prohibition in the USA and how it was a failure. So, you've got a lot of people worried about a slippery slope in comparison to tobacco.

Third, the alcohol industry is far better at lobbying around specific items that would actually prevent consumption. For instance, alcoholic beverages don't need to show nutritional information. It will bend in a way that keeps access open.

I spend a lot of time in Ireland and tbh I can't remember the last time I saw an ad for regular alcoholic drinks like beers and whiskeys.. Tbh even that should banned at this stage too.

What's worse though is gambling advertising. I fucking hate that shit so much. Its popularity preys on desperate people and further drives the K shaped economy we are seeing nowadays. Its so fucked up.

The law is different in different parts of the world. In some parts of the world, alcohol can only be purchased in specialty stores. In other parts, it can be bought effectively anywhere.

In line with OP's question, CVS made a big deal about banning the sale of tobacco in all its pharmacies a decade ago, saying it could not sell tobacco products and be a health care provider at the same time. However, in some states, a CVS will have rows of alcohol for sale because it is legal to sell there.

Allero@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 101d (1 reply)

In Russia, alcohol ads are banned. So, beer ads take all the air, rolling their usual, and adding a small fast "nonalcoholic" at the end for their obscure nonalcolohic version no one cares about.

So, effectively, advertising your beer is legal as long as you have a nonalcoholic version.

Money. Cigarette ads were justly banned. The Marlboro Man and Joe Camel were iconic brands. The latter was designed specifically to encourage kids to smoke. As a kid, I thought Joe Camel was cool as shit. I didn't want to smoke because of him, but I liked his vibe. (It wasn't lost on me that his head was shaped like a penis; that was an intentional design choice, but he was still a cool dude.) That said, when I turned 18 and I tried smoking, I bought a pack of Camel filters, but that was because it was my mom's brand. I tried like two. Decided it wasn't for me. My mom's only beef was that I bought a hard pack — she always bought soft packs. I never got that. Anyway, she got 18 smokes for free, and even back when they were $1.50 a pack, that was a heck of a deal. (Fortunately she did not make me chain smoke the rest of them. I learned my lesson. Plus, I was 18.)

Alcohol is bad, but smoking is worse.
Smoking is both way more addictive and it is a bigger health risk.
It's rare to be a moderate smoker, generally you either don't smoke at all, or if you do you are a smoker, with numerous health risks.
With alcohol moderate use is the norm, and only excessive use will make you an alcoholic, resulting in numerous health risks.

AFAIK it has only lately become known that even moderate alcohol use is still a health risk. AFAIK mostly causing intestine cancer.
So instead we have campaigns warning against drinking to much, which was also how it started with cigarettes.

FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 103d (2 replies)

I've always found it weird that alcohol doesn't have warning labels. At least not where I live. I guess the risks are common knowledge but we can say the same for cigarettes

And how there's no requirements to show ingredients/calories per 100ml, despite it being required on all other foodstuffs. And imagine if they had disgusting pictures on beer cans saying "don't drink and drive" or such.

RBWells@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 103d (2 replies)

I do think that on a phone or computer one ought to be able to opt out, like how shops who spam me in email say "do you want to opt out of mother's day emails?" Because they don't want to send them if your mom or kid just died, right?

But I don't know how you would do that without sort of registering as an alcoholic, which seems problematic.

I'm literally subscribed to an industry newsletter and research cocktails for the community here, and haven't seen very many ads for any sort of alcohol though? Are you really seeing them all the time?

CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social · 3 pts · 103d

If you wanted to make it possible to opt out of certain categories of ads (like alcohol) on personal devices/computers, without having to tell the advertiser that you're an alcoholic or similar, perhaps a law could mandate that ads made for those products or brands associated with them be tagged as such in some way, and that software that displays ads should have a setting to not display ones that arrive with that tag? That way the setting only needs to be client side. I mean ideally you'd just not have ads at all but that's a much bigger and more difficult fight than just alcohol obviously.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 103d

It’s honestly hard to say. Obviously it’s not ever single commercial I see. I feel like an abnormal amount. I see more drinking adds than gambling ads.

But I can’t be positive because I notice every drinking ad because I’m struggling. I probably wouldn’t notice a Nerf commercial in the mix.

Agent641@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 103d (2 replies)

To be fair, as an alcoholic, alcohol ads had zero effect on my purchases.

Before I quit, the only thing that influenced my buying was the calculator app on my phone. For beer it was Millilitres per can times cans per block divided by ABV, divided by price. Higher number good.. For scotch and port it was easier.

Bgugi@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 103d (1 reply)

divided by abv

Well it's probably a good thing you quit!

Cigarette companies themselves actually lobbied for cigarette commercials to be banned. For more information, look up "Knowing Better cigarettes" on YouTube since I'll have to write an essay to explain why and he puts it way better than I can

Aeao@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 102d (1 reply)

I’m not saying I don’t believe you. But is saying if cigarettes wanted to stop advertising they didn’t need approval.

So op advertising.

pirate2377@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 102d

To try to oversimplify: there was some law from the Clinton administration that said for X amount of ads for cigarettes, information for what cigarettes do to you must be aired as well (in the form of an ad). So, to kill 2 birds with one stone, they lobbyed and successfully got cigarette ads banned. This served to try and suppress potential competition outside of the big name brands and information for what cigarettes actually do to you. So, it was a 4D chess move done by the big cigarette companies collaborating with each other. I hope that makes sense

FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website · 4 pts · 103d (2 replies)

How is that legal?

Those considerations are always a trade-off. How much government should interfere with an industry, especially one that's been around since we monkeys climbed down from the trees? There isn't just the plight of alcoholics to consider. An advertisement ban would affect business and jobs. It would take a considerable chunk out of the advertising market that when gone world affect media, an already struggling industry. And AA doesn't quite have the deep pockets for lobbying. It's legal because it's complicated, not because it's just.

I happen to agree with you here; ads for alcohol should be banned along with those for any sort of gambling and prescription medication while I'm at it. This "drink responsibly" campaign is an effort to make it harder for lawmakers to decide. I'm reminded of that Soviet Union quote and i'm paraphrasing: we know that they know that we know that they know they're lying yet the lying continues.

One day at a time.

Gambling also has that little “see we care” bit at the end

“Ifyouorafamikyhasaproblemgamblinghelpis available “

“See we are offering help.”

You seem like you got a good head on your shoulders.

Couldn’t an angle be worked that specifically targeted adds to those in recovery are as egregious as saying it’s healthy? Like all my targeted adds are booze and bar accessories.

Same I’m sure with gambling addicts.

That we could target. I think everyone can agree that’s pretty messed up.

FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website · 3 pts · 103d

As I said, I agree with you. As another commenter said, big tobacco lied and got caught and punished. Big booze hasn't risen to quite that level. Additionally and unfortunately, alcoholics and gambling addicts are probably a relatively small part of the population and less likely to vote. And politics is a numbers game. We live in a relatively fucked up world. Where convicted sexual assaulters can still be president. Where the only person convicted from a pedophile gang is a woman. And where you need to be stronger than most of us to not fall off the wagon. But you can translate this justified anger into political change. This must be an issue that has an action group in politics somewhere, which you could seek out and support.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 103d

That’s a good answer other than the prohibition part. Yes that’s was disaster. I’m talking about advertising the product to … young people a lot of the time.

Plus the framework for the ad ban has already been tried successfully.

Cigateres are produced by a handful of companies. They can lobby, lie and bribe.

Alcohol is also produced by farmers. And they are very loud and meaningful group with a lots of support and political power when they get united... So there would be a massive outrage if someone would like cut off profits from "poor farmers".

blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 102d (3 replies)

There is no safe amount of alcohol to drink. It is like cigarettes, entirely bad for you.

Not a great analogy. You've just decided the cons of drinking outweigh the pros.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 94d (2 replies)

There is no safe amount of alcohol.

For example: you just decided the cons of hitting your head with a rock outweighs the pros.

There is no safe amount of hitting yourself in the face with a rock.

You could argue “what about the red wine studies!” Those benefits are debatable at best with a single glass of red wine.

Either way it’s irrelevant because if I meant wine I would’ve said wine.

More importantly I don’t see a lot of wine commercial. The current level of wine advertising is fine with me.

blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 89d (1 reply)

The only thing you're telling me is you're unaware of the benefits. Making absurd, obviously stupid comparisons won't convince anyone.

Alcohol can help relax muscles, ease headaches and help you overcome performance anxiety.

A typical beer can pacify and numb mouth sores without aggravating them.

If you're planning to reply with another obviously moronic comparison, choose better instead.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 63d

Sorry I was in rehab.

Clearly you are unaware of the pros of hitting yourself in the face with a rock. It helps you sleep, helps with high blood pressure…

The fact of the matter is there is no healthy use of alcohol. They make pills that are prescribed by doctor for what you are describing. No doctor is going to prescribe drinking alcohol because it is only negative.

I’m sorry you are struggling with accepting alcohol as a bad habit but that doesn’t make me stupid. It just means you are unwilling to face it.

TBH: Interesting question, post ruined by this "US-centric or not" BS. (Rest assured that as European, I don't give a f about your insecurities with your education, at least not in unrelated posts. I'd bet most Europeans would not be able to point to most U.S. on the map, maybe Texas, California, Florida (wink) or NY but that's about it. Even I know barely half of them, and that's because I'm a terminally online look-up-everything-on-wikipedia nerd.)

I was just curious about what would people say about ad regulations. I would have no problem with question being US-centric or any-other-country-centric.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 101d (1 reply)

Insecurities about our education? It’s a well known fact our education is pretty crappy compared to other stable countries. It’s known we don’t learn shit about other countries. We are behind countries I can’t spell in literacy and 17th in education.

It’s like saying “I’m sorry you’re insecure about your broken leg? “ “im not insecure my leg is broken it just hurts and we should probably be doing something about it”

If I don’t mention I’m talking about America I get people mad at me, if I do mention I’m from America I get people mad at me.

So I guess just be mad and I’ll keep telling jokes.

Btw you do not want to wink at Florida. You won’t like the red neck that winks back lol

netvor@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 100d

I don't disagree about the education. (Technically I can't agree too vehemently since I don't know that much and I don't live there nor do I know anyone in person who lives in U.S. but I hear about the problems all the time and, fingers crossed, all power to you if you can improve it).

My point was just that, as someone who had a love-hate relationship with alcohol that lasted too long and had a bad break-up, I was really excited about this question and then disappointed about the discussion being derailed, and even more disappointed that OP is contributing to that derailment.

And I guess I overreacted a bit, sorry.

None of that was meant to invalidate your concerns about U.S. centrism and education issues, it's just a different topic, that's all.
