That was the original name IBM wanted to use, but it was already trademarked. I remember my professor making a point of not pronouncing it sequel, and telling us that story.
My opinion has alwaya been called it what ever you like, so long as people know what you're talking about. S.Q.L. sequel, sequal, whatever. They're all close enough to be understandable.
This is actually one of those situations where the official stance is "we only give a shit on paper"
Originally they wanted to call it SEQUEL which was.. Idk, some acronym somebody else can look up but apparently it was taken at the time and people actually cared about that kinda thing in the 70s so it became "SQL" which was probably spelled out in business environments but obviously it was still "spiritually" SEQUEL

We say SQL "S-Q-L", but anyway, we pronounce PostgreSQL Postgre (like "grr") SQL.

It's just an initialism, like FBI or MI5. Nobody is calling them Fibby and Mefive.

Wow, I just always thought it was people who were too Microsoft-brained to pronounce it correctly. Still never pronouncing it like that, though.
