I think it's fair to call me an elder lemming at this point, as I recall the reasons for both. I signed up on .world with my first account on the last day before the infamous APIocalypse.

Along with myself, a lot of us were putting effort into posting good stuff, upvoting, and generally having a lot of positive interactions. Someone on !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world posted a picture with a can of beans with a caption along the lines of "I hear that lemmy will upvote anything. Here's a picture of beans". It quickly became the most upvoted post of all time.

As lemmy culture developed into a deeply political space, it began flooding !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world with American politics. People got sick of it, and people started doing "we're posting x now until politics stops". There had been a couple rounds of various themes, and then someone announced "that's it, I'm sick of politics everywhere. We're posting corn". Cornposting has become the default political purge over there.

Thanks for the explanation! I didn't use to check Lemmy frequently up until recently, so the cornposting has always been this strange thing i saw sometimes, but never understood it. Now it makes sense

popekingjoe@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 25d (2 replies)

We also did it with vans for some reason. So throw that in your history notes.

ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 25d (1 reply)

I remember a small jeans era as well

Minarble@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 25d

Sometimes the beans were in jeans.

Maroon@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 25d (5 replies)

to call me an elder lemming at this point,

Looks at profile age: 1 years 4 months.

Me (2 years 7 months): Huh, guess I'll just take my prehistoric ass out of here and go chip flints.

TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 15 pts · 25d (1 reply)

well, they said their first account was on .world, and the one you checked the age of is on blahaj. so, an age discrepancy is to be expected.

Maroon@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 25d

Ah, clearly age has affected my ability to read and comprehend. Thanks for correcting me.

Goes back to flint knapping

I guess I’m from before time (3y).

Dvixen@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 24d (1 reply)

We're old like dirt.

Or beans. Old like beans.

BeanEater@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 24d

Did someone say beans? Old beans are still tasty

The moths freaked me out a bit. I bet that's the next one

I miss the moths

ptu@sopuli.xyz · 8 pts · 25d

Maybe we should start posting lamps

JigglySackles@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 25d

I was cracking up at the moths

Zephyr@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 25d

Wait, there was a time before every post and comment chain became political? Sounds magical.

Cornposting

I heard cornyposting was pretty popular

gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org · 1 pts · 24d

seems like political shit ended up fertilizing good crops, then. :)

(btw i fully support breaking political content on non-political communities because it deters new users to the fediverse and also because it's hella annoying, itchy even)

MintyFresh@lemmy.world · 38 pts · 25d (3 replies)

Corn is out. Squash is the it thing now!

have you never beheld a sweet, buttered cob

mamg22@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 25d

Is holding such a cob the path to enlightenment? If so, then I shall find one and hold it dearly

Zombie@feddit.uk · 22 pts · 25d

Two of the pinned memes on slrpnk memes tells you exactly why we all love corn and beans!

Squashposting, here we come.

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 24d (14 replies)

I was sick of seeing political stuff on the shitposting group so I started bombarding it with corn until it stopped. I had happened to have a bunch of corn pictures saved on my phone because I had flooded my friend's discord with corn pictures just to goof on her.

It spiraled into a glorious corn filled nightmare insanity, and as someone from Ohio, I appreciate that.

I think the beans came up later because people like to play with themes.

Magnum@infosec.pub · 8 pts · 24d (10 replies)

No? The beans came before the corn...

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23d (9 replies)

Then maybe the beans came first idk, I'm not gonna go back and check.

Magnum@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 23d (8 replies)

I know, they came first, there were even Jeans in between. I'm sorry if I shattered your world, but I'm sure otherwise you are a really important person.

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 22d (7 replies)

It... Didn't really shatter my world, I really don't care if beans came first. I'm not that important and neither is like, any of this.

Magnum@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 22d (6 replies)

Don't act like this isn't the most important thing to you and that you have tried to claim Lemmy history

agent_nycto@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 22d (5 replies)

I did start the corn thing though. corn man

It's not the most important things to me though, this is like, a very small shitposting community in a very small niche Reddit knock off.

Sorry if me saying I did something made you mad

Magnum@infosec.pub · 0 pts · 22d

See its clearly something you desperately need everybody to know and believe

gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org · 4 pts · 24d (2 replies)

thank you for this well-done psyop. we really need more non-political memes.

here, have a picture of the Three Sisters as a reward:

Everyone loves corn it’s got the juice

Little1Lost@gehirneimer.de · 8 pts · 24d

about the beans: look for top all time
After the wave of newcomers lowered lemmy started to have some "weekly" phases where other memes became the meta like the german pedalo or moths and many others.

But as a moth fren i bring some moth memes back from time to time :)

HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 25d (1 reply)

From what I hear corn "is good enough and its got the juice"

charokol@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 25d

I’ve been on Lemmy for a whole day and I’ve literally never heard anybody referenced corn and beans

btsax@reddthat.com · 6 pts · 24d (3 replies)

If someone could also explain why half the post titles have the word "rule" in them, that would also be helpful

SacralPlexus@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 24d

Disclosure: I don’t know the full lore and I’m only answering because nobody else has.

My vague understanding is that this is unique to the ‘196’ community which has a community rule that every post must include the word “rule” in the title post. So it’s super common to see because it’s an active community. Beyond that I don’t really understand what the community is about as it seems to have a random variety of posts.

chiliedogg@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 24d (1 reply)

The 196 community has an (unenforced) rule that you must post every time you visit, so they're posts that are following the rule.

KernelTale@programming.dev · 1 pts · 23d

I didn't know that... I will fix that first thing tomorrow morning.

SillyMe@piefed.social · 5 pts · 25d (2 replies)

were you around on reddit when they were obsessed with bacon and narwhals? this is basically the equivalent but for lemmy. if you were not around for that I don't know how to explain it to you.

musubibreakfast@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Bruh, bacon was different. I don't think anyone here is going to build an entire brand and livelihood around beans. Sometimes I think the whole bacon thing might've been a government PSI op.

surewhynotlem@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d

build an entire brand and livelihood around beans

@liam

Edit: I guess that's probably a different Liam

Zephyr@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 25d

First I'm hearing about this. I guess Lemmy will lose their mind when they learn about Kenyan githeri

Kintarian@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 25d

I wonder if Cornholio eats beans

GorGor@startrek.website · 6 pts · 25d

add squash, then you have the three sisters.

Zephyr@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 25d

Kenyan Githeri is pretty much a big bowl of beans and corn
