I really don’t understand where the “aboot” thing comes from. I’ve lived here all my life and have family in every part of the country and never heard it before except by Americans mocking us.

devdoggy@piefed.social · 8 pts · 31d (2 replies)

The thing is, that's just it. It is an excuse for Americans tooooo ridicule Canadians for being tooooo Canadian. Sorrrrry. Eh?

BurntWits@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 31d (1 reply)

I get the “sorry” and “eh” though, I do both of those all the time (though not as much as the stereotypes probably). But I have no idea where “aboot” came from.

I’m not sure exactly which region, but I know for a fact that there is a region in Canada that speaks like this. I thought it was just a joke until I met someone from there. My memory suggests maybe from near Winnipeg? I could be entirely wrong there, it was twentyish years ago. (We were both volunteering for Hurricane Katrina cleanup in Mississippi)

Anyway, he legitimately had the most stereotypical thick THICK Canadian accent I’ve ever heard before, and at first I was convinced it was affected or a joke he was making. Nope, that’s just how he talked.

It’s definitely a thing, but sounds more like a-boat to me than a-boot. Very heavy around Toronto and Ottawa.

It’s a documented dialect feature called Canadian Raising. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_raising

I've heard it in the wild.

mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 31d

it's equally that americans really over pronounce the "owt"

lyralycan@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 31d (2 replies)

Stereotype, innit

Most Brits never do what they're famous for, like having crooked teeth, say things like inni' and bo'ol o' wo'ah, etc. It's a combination of regional differences and predominantly white civilisations' disrespect for 'otherness'.

Australian? That little chap?

SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social · 4 pts · 31d

It barely hatched, doesn't even have its acid fire-breath and the spike-launcher.

Now I wish I had Untitled Goose Game on PC so I could mod the goose to be a dragon.

Canadian geese are pushovers. I have no idea how they got their reputation. Maybe people are just startled by their hissing?

minorkeys@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 31d

They got to from their own desire to see geese that way.
