...highest-grossing movie of the year so far!

Yep Spider-man is right around the corner

OldChicoAle@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 25d (1 reply)

So nothing original?

MagicShel@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 25d

I'm hoping for an Everything Everywhere All At Once Cinematic Universe, because I like my originality to feel familiar.

And they still laid off a substantial percentage of their artists.

ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de · 4 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Yeah. So is it piratable yet?

CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 25d

Not yet

If the movie is finished, what's the purpose of keeping them? I'm asking this out of curiosity, not supporting or arguing for the studio.

SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de · 9 pts · 25d

Use them for the next movie?

THB@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 25d

What the other person said. Also, these artists would already have been on other projects. Most of them would have finished work on this movie months ago. Pixar has a stable of artists that are continually on staff for development or unreleased future projects. Some of the people let go had been there for 20 years.

Wait, they made Toy Story 4? Wasn't the story done with 3?

mushroommunk@lemmy.today · 22 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Oh you sweet innocent child. They're going to milk that cow for every penny they can and then some.

That's all Hollywood seems to know what to do these days. Churn out sequels and legacy sequels that don't understand what made the original great. And every once in a while when crowds flick around a good movie they'll beat it to death for more. And people will keep going because they need something to do to distract from gestures at everything

At least the toy story movies have all landed somewhere between good and great.

I have mixed feelings about the movie, on one hand it just felt off and not the quality I used to expect from Pixar. On the other hand it does try, it didn’t feel like a cash grab and wanted to touch on an important subject.

SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 9 pts · 25d (4 replies)

Toy Story came out in 1995. Children who were seeing it as kids back then are now over thirty and have their own kids.

joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 25d

I guess that's the idea, hold on to your horses, they are going to try to milk these millennials for every penny they are worth with nostalgia bait

phailhaus@piefed.social · 4 pts · 25d (1 reply)

Isn't 5 about them interacting with the current generation and competing with tablets and phones?

SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 25d

It is, but I'm not sure that make it any less odd.

criss_cross@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 25d

My daughter fell in love with the OG movie.

OldChicoAle@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 25d (2 replies)

That movie kinda sucked though.

CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 25d

Agreed. It was just a rehash of all the other ones with few redeeming qualities.

I feel like I'm hearing the same and seeing the same results as the latest Mario movie.

fartographer@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 25d

$1 billion? What is that, 400 tickets?

Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 25d

I don't know why anyone watched this movie.

JiveTurkey@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 24d

This is crazy. I thought it was pretty mediocre.
