Social media influencers fighting against extradition to UK where they face rape, sexual assault and other allegations
Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain in jail at least two more weeks until their next hearing as they fight extradition to the United Kingdom, where the brothers are accused of rape and sex trafficking, a federal judge said on Monday.
US magistrate Lauren Louis set a detention hearing for 13 August to determine whether the Tates should stay in jail or be released during what could be a months-long extradition process.
The brothers were not in court on Monday or required to be there and have remained in jail since making a brief court appearance two days after their 18 July arrest.
The Tates have become among the world’s most polarizing internet personalities with their promotion of wealth, male dominance and misogyny through their social media empire. The new allegations are the latest in a long-running international legal saga involving the Tates that has spanned the US, Britain and Romania. The brothers have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

At least one of them has repeatedly bragged about their wrongdoing on video, and given instructions for others on how to also do that wrongdoing, so...
JoMiran@lemmy.ml · 34 pts · 23d
Yo dawg, he's not denying doing the wrong, just that the wrong he's doing in his wrongdoing is not wrong.

Sociopaths always do this. They assume the world will give them everything so they have no qualms at all about documenting all their misdeeds.

Can they just stay in there forever?

Like trump, there's virtually no chance they're not guilty of what they're accused of and much worse. And many people went to jail for life for a joint. People still to this day are killed for homosexuality. I think humans' most unique trait is that they can create a justification for any injustice, no matter how glaring.
Sackett@thelemmy.club · 5 pts · 23d
Hey now, they can also vilify any justice, no matter how righteous.
scarabic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22d
Studies suggest that all our choices are unconscious and this entire thing we call sentience is a shameless justification engine, making sense of all the choices we’ve already made. It really do be kind of like the Oracle said to Neo that one time: “You didn’t come here to make the choice - you’ve already made it. Now you have to understand it.”
slackassassin@piefed.social · 1 pts · 22d
Pretty sure having a concept of justice is unique among humans in and of itself.
Sackett@thelemmy.club · 3 pts · 22d
Perhaps not.

I don't have any source to cite, but I will say that it seems neigh impossible that there aren't at least some animals who experience something like "that isn't fair". I mean even just with dogs you can easily observe something akin to, if not, jealousy just by giving one dog a treat but not others.
slackassassin@piefed.social · 2 pts · 22d
If so, and I'm just having fun here, then it could be said that it's neigh impossible that they couldn't conjure a justification as well.
That pupper who got a treat needed it to survive and deserved it for all the good boy points!
TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 22d
That's probably true. Dogs cannot cause the suffering of billions of other dogs though.

Seriously though, there are a ton of extremely gregarious animals out there, it wouldn't be too surprising if some of them have some rudimentary concept of justice

But it's unpleasant there, and they didn't like it. Those poor little dudes.
I hope their hearings drag on a little.

Aww, shucky darns. Anyway, how's everyone's gardens growing? We started getting tomatoes, but with this heat they've stopped ripening. And I've def. got a skunk picking and eating my tomatoes. I found the burrow. And there's 2 half eaten tomatoes just outside the burrow this morning. I gotta do something.

My chillies have been absolutely loving this sunshine, had to prune a fair few branches down because they're reaching the ceiling from their windowsill perch.
Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io · 2 pts · 22d
Nice, what kinds are you growing? I've got some sweets, and on the hot side habanero, scotch bonnet, and aji rojo. If all goes well I'll be makin' hot sauce, soon.
NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 21d
I've got a yellow habañero sprouting, some scotch bonnets that have been going for a couple of generations after I rescued the parent plant from a garden centre, and some Rwandan scotch bonnets that I bought as fresh that are growing absolutely massive leaves
I'm very jealous, haven't had enough to make a decent sauce, most of mine have ended up dried and crushed into fine enough powder that opening the jar makes me sneeze

I used to have a beautiful organic garden, and one of my best animal repellants was peeing on the borders of my garden. One night I would pee on the corners, another night on the borders. It works, and it's fun!
scarabic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 22d
Yeah shame. I didn’t get the jump on planting I should have this year and decided fuck it I’m just scattering wildflower seeds in all my beds to they have some kind of cover crop. The results have been so spectacular that I might never use the beds for anything else again! Working and working to get a carrot…? What was I thinking!

What kinda basis can they argue against extradition? Its for a crime in the UK so if you did it or not should be argued in a UK court. Not a US one.
Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 22d
Countries frequently only extradite if the crime they would be extraditing for is also a crime in their own jurisdiction.
The basic idea kind of makes sense, like you wouldn't extradite your own citizen to Indonesia for acting homosexual in public, or to Afghanistan for not wearing Hijab, or to the USA for being antifa, or to Poland for having an abortion.
It just gets annoying when basic moral agreement is a given, but some sort of technicality leads to long delays.

Trump is their buddy.
echodot@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 21d
Trump doesn't care about them. Refusing extradition would only lead to bad press so he's not going to do it.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 20d
Barron loves them, he'll go to bat for them.
Frankly, I hope Trump refuses to extradite them, I'd love to see him get savaged for it. It's a win-win.

I never said I hoped they were, just that I expect them to be. I'd rather see them live a long, miserable life in prison as well.
scarabic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 22d
Yeah wow Epstein clearly trafficked out girls and women so he could implicate others and gain leverage over them. Mostly to protect his own pedo raping. It’s like he never figured that knowing too much about the most powerful people on earth could get him killed. Did he not have some failsafe disclosure in case of his untimely death? Where is it?

Wondering if the US is going to step in and save them at some point...is it really possible that they are too toxic for even this administration!?
Squizzy@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 22d
Its said that no one really likes them, the department with control of extradition is headed by a trump fool but who previous to boot licking took a hard line and championed trafficking legislation.
Trump said he doesn't care for them or something. They are screwed, he does not need a "pedo frees rapists" headline right now.

Better they rot in an American prison forever than wasting legal resources elsewhere. They are an American made problem, the US should take care of it.
