Sam Altman says

Opinion discarded

First_Thunder@lemmy.zip · 54 pts · 19d (7 replies)

I’d like to interject for a moment, but what you’re actually referring as Sam Altman isn’t his actual name, but as I’ve taken to calling him Scam Altman

frank@sopuli.xyz · 17 pts · 18d (4 replies)

His friend calls him Clammy Sam

FRYD@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 18d (1 reply)

Clamuel even

elvith@feddit.org · 11 pts · 18d

*Scamuel

Dojan@pawb.social · 1 pts · 18d (1 reply)

Doubt he has friends.

frank@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 18d

It was singular on purpose

gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 18d

Heh, that’s good; I’m gonna use it going forward :)

tunetardis@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 18d

Is there an Origman? Can we go back to him for a bit?

frunch@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 19d

If i force myself to read anything he's said, i make sure i read it in that pre-pubescent voice of his. I can never get past the way it sounds like he's straining to summon enough energy to make sound come out of his mouth. The ideas that couple with that hideous noise just make the situation magnitudes worse 🫩

khannie@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 18d

Got a good laugh from that. Beautifully succinct.

i did not.

I do enjoy working a lot

Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t prefer to work shorter weeks for companies that profit from me

Then I can spend more time on my own projects which is more rewarding

saltesc@lemmy.world · 56 pts · 19d (1 reply)

People enjoy productivity. People love working on things. But they don't enjoy working on things for someone else, all while getting nothing out of it but some financial compensation for their time wasted.

One of the most awful feelings is being too exhausted to work on your own projects. It's so unfulfilling and anti-human nature.

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 17 pts · 19d

some financial compensation for their time wasted.

*As minimal financial compensation as possible, which must be constantly fought over too.

tty5@lemmy.world · 61 pts · 18d

He's half right. I enjoy being busy, as long as I'm doing things I want when I want. What my employer wants me to do is rarely on the top of that list.

BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca · 60 pts · 19d

Yes Sam, we are yearning for the mines, and for billionaires to abuse us even more...

daannii@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 18d

If you don't like working 50 hours a week until age 80 for a non living wage. It means you have work derangement syndrome. Totally a real thing.

pasdechance@jlai.lu · 29 pts · 19d (3 replies)

Why bother talking to guys like Sam? Why print what they say?

He isn't even an AI expert, his own employees have said so. He is just the adman.

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 6 pts · 19d (1 reply)

It's probably just the usual of trying to appeal to people in power/higher position aka basic bootlicking.

pasdechance@jlai.lu · 5 pts · 19d

Probably. Paris Marx just wrote a post about Musk that reminds me of this a bit https://disconnect.blog/elon-musks-tired-schtick/

kshade@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 18d

Why bother talking to guys like Sam? Why print what they say?

Because very dumb people with lots of money still believe his lies.

He's running out of superlatives though, can't go much beyond declaring that the singularity is happening right now. Which I means the investors will see that huge ROI aaaany second now.

Smokeless7048@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 18d (1 reply)

Here's the thing, I do love being busy...

Playing with my kid

Cleaning the house

Painting minis

Work busy is so far down the list

Einskjaldi@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 18d

There is a thing if you do nothing and didn't interact with the world at all and work can expose you to different groups of people, that work can be better than never working. But the ideal schedule is like 5 hours twice a week with almost no commute. More than three days and it starts to harm you and drastically reduces what you can do.

Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org · 25 pts · 19d (4 replies)

Well yeah, i enjoy being busy. It's even kinda necessary for me due to ADHD, if i sit still with nothing to do for too long, days to weeks, early symptoms of depression start to slowly creep in which will get worse over time.

I'd just like to be busy with my interests and hobbies, not damned work. Even though I actually do like my work.

gdog05@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 19d

I would play games and work on my many many side projects. I'd have so much more time for that (and let's be honest, maybe some games) if we had 4 day work weeks!

robomuffin79@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 19d

The tech bro billionaires have a bright future planned for humanity. When jobs disappear, they’re hoping we all start fighting and killing each other until disasters reduce the global Population. Meanwhile, they will be shacked up in their remote luxury resorts riding out events until there are a few million people left who can then work as their very own serfs

grrgyle@slrpnk.net · 24 pts · 18d

Busy with what

This mfer thinks we don't do shit outside of working hours wtf

btsax@reddthat.com · 23 pts · 18d

Yeah dude, busy playing Metroid and going surfing, not busy completing four hours of unskippable corporate training for the third time this month

Dogiedog64@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 18d

Fuck man, if AI made it so I didn't have to work 40 hours a week just to live, you know what I'd be doing?

I'd be keeping busy about as much time per week, sure. But I'd be doing shit I WANT TO DO instead of maximizing Shareholder Value™️. Reading, motorcycling, brewing, baking, hiking...

Living. Not just working.

Unfortunately for us all, LLMs won't do that and never were designed for it. Instead they're tools of Fascist oppression, and should be destroyed.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 18d

"We always want more. We think of new things to do, to create for each other, to want for ourselves. It's like a relative game. People are very focused on how they're doing relative to other people," the CEO said.

they had us in the first half. not gonna lie~

People billionaires are very focused on how they're doing relative to other people billionaires.

I enjoy teaching and, provided I was guaranteed my needs and reasonable comforts were provided, would continue to teach for free. I doubt Altman’s talking about passionate people pursuing their passions free from the threat of financial ruin.

ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one · 3 pts · 18d

Bingo! People love being busy when it's about passionate work or enjoying their hobbies.

Kurtismayfield@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 18d

Altman passion is to make more money. He is a venture capitalist primarily, making billions on his previous investments in tech companies. He is not a human existence 99.9999 % of us can emulate.

gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 18d

Every time I think Altman has maxxed the “I am a complete fucking tool and a garbage human” metric, he manages to set the bar a little bit higher. It’s as impressive as it is obnoxious and aggravating.

finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 18d

Yes ... busy doing the stuff we want to do, not busy doing the stuff we have to do for a boss we hate!

ReluctantZen@feddit.nl · 13 pts · 19d (1 reply)

Yeah, but like, being busy by doing things we enjoy doing

cobysev@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 18d

I retired young, at 38 years old. I'm not wealthy, just broken from 20 years of military service and receiving enough pay and benefits to cover my basic needs without having to work.

Do I want to be busy? Heck yeah! My days are so packed with stuff to do, I need to keep a schedule so I don't miss out on things going on in my life. I'm booked solid for at least a few years out on projects, events, socializing, and general fun activities.

Do I want to go back to work though? Fuck no. I gave up my personal freedom and a handful of my basic human rights to work for the govt for 2 decades. It's my time now.

I enjoy not having to wake up at god-awful hours of the morning. I enjoy not having to dress up and go to a job, where I'm stuck until a certain time of day regardless of my productivity level. I enjoy deciding each morning what my day is going to be like, or choosing not to face the day and just veg out in bed all day.

Most everyone wants to be busy. Most people want to live though, not work. I achieved that dream and get to live the rest of my life enjoying things. I just had to sacrifice my mind and body to "earn" it.

tigermountain@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 18d

Why don't we just start with a mandatory 4 day work week and see how many people want to work on Friday.

Stern@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 18d

The only people I know who are keen on going to work have been doing 40 hour weeks for decades. It's not enjoyment, it's indoctrination. Enjoying being busy is in no way equivalent to enjoying sitting in a office hearing Janet say "Someone has a case of the Mondays!".

I think this is true to an extent. It's why I don't give much Creedence to the "no one would work under communism" rhetoric.

That being said, there's a difference between keeping busy with hobbies and building stuff for myself or to eventually sell, and making my employer money.

I hate being busy.

Yet more evidence I am not human.

prime_number_314159@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 18d

This relates to the thing I am most confused by in today's business climate. Companies face brutal competition, and tremendous pressure to "innovate" (screw the customer more), and yet every ounce of research on the question suggests that rather than pushing people to work longer and longer hours, they can get the most out of their workforce by mandating proper sleep, time walking/in nature/exercise, non-continuous working periods, and comfort items like faster computers, better chairs, higher quality food, etc.

Why isn't any company ruthlessly pursuing efficiency by giving bonuses for sleeping well? It would be super creepy and authoritarian to mandate sleep monitoring, but I don't see why that stops them, when it doesn't appear to in any other direction. Or even simpler, requiring shorter working hours, but expecting the same/more output?

Is it this exact attitude, that somehow happy workers with free time will get up to no good, or become depressed, or feel less committed or something?

Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 18d

Sam Altman is talking out of his ass again. More news at ten

Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 18d

The "secret" is people want and will actively seek out passions, and having a job that you're passionate about is a night and day difference.

All you need to get people passionate is provide livable wage, have a supportive work culture, and give them a sense of purpose for their work.

Instead we've got shit pay, managers that will abuse your trust to get free work then dump you on a bad quarter, and all sense of choice and responsibility stripped in favor of getting you to follow a corporate script and be a good little corporate automaton that absorbs the customer's complaints while being powerless to fix their issue.

JigglySackles@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 15d

I mean honestly, no shit it won't shorten the work week, because no technological advancement has ever made us less busy. Only more. His reason is wrong and is just a bald faced lie to cover that he thinks it's a great way to milk out more blood from the stones these places are built on.

vane@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 18d

We will be working hard to build more data centers so computers can do creative jobs and manage us.

MangoCats@feddit.it · 3 pts · 18d

Balance in all things.

Something something revealed preference.

DGen@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 18d

So..uhm. He can shut up. Yeah.

Photonic@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 18d (2 replies)

Well, not that secretly. A lot of people will straight up tell you. And being out of a job is a big stressor for the majority of jobless people, and not only because of the financial aspect. We do like being busy, having structure to our day, of which work is a part.

That doesn’t mean people don’t want to be overworked or feel like they’re a modern slave to the system where their only purpose is to make more money for their already rich boss.

DragonAce@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 18d (1 reply)

People want to be fulfilled, not busy. There is a HUGE difference. The main stressor from being unemployed is financial, I would give a fuck about working if I had a steady source of passive income. I would much rather spend my day doing things that feed my soul, rather than spending 8 hours in meetings or in front of a computer screen.

Photonic@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 18d

Nah, boredom is a big stressor as well and keeping busy prevents that. And it’s definitely not just financial.

Crucially, the negative impact of unemployment on mental health cannot be fully explained by reductions in financial resources and social support only (e.g., Crowe and Butterworth, 2016Zuelke et al., 2018). ^[1]^
