it's been some journey watching these green frogs go from being used to deny the holocaust to being used to advocate for more bike lanes

Stranger yet for those of us who remember him as a chill dude who liked to pee with his pants around his ankles.

Matt Furie is the artist of this piece and also the creator of Pepe the frog!

I had a friend who would do this every now and again for a laugh.

They were stolen from the people of the internet by the far right. It's up to the internet to take them back. Even the original creator was very upset about what had become of his little frog.

He fucking fought it though. Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch the documentary Feels Good Man. It's pretty cool how far the author went to save Pepe

Came here to post about this too. Fascinating doc.

It's funny but I remember the original post that coopted Pepe. It was during the Trump v Hillary campaign when she referred to his supporters as a basket of deplorables. The meme emerged based on the Expendables poster with Trump flanked by the team he then had. And because it was 4Chan, Pepe was thrown in there.

I always found it kind of random. There was a thing on Chan at the time where Chloe Metz's face would be shopped onto female body builders. It could have just as easily been Metz, or Wojack, or any other thing that was happening Chan at the time. But it was that. And that's how a funny frog became a hate symbol for a while.

Rarest Pepe

Because strangely, the one opinion is considered more radical than the other, certainly in certain circles.

4chan is awesome precisely because you can go from a post advocating for a second holocaust to a post in support of bike lanes

You just have to dodge the pedos and the military psyops and the government psyops and the ones running Epstein's estate and the racists and the psychopaths and the incels and the bots, but after all that you might just see something that'll make you exhale briskly out of your nose in mirth.

The old one's still going along just fine

Pepe has a complicated history. I don’t think it reached that level though, IMHO

DrBob@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 1d

Its not all that complicated. Two of the three major points are linked in this thread. He was a chill member of Boys Club and repurposed into a whack of memes. Trump Pepe was added to the deplorables poster and the right wing grabbed him as a symbol. Matt Furie fought back and we are slowly reclaiming a silly frog.
