The Tyson beef plant that just got shutdown in the Midwest is going to fuck Republicans...
Not because of the 2-3k workers, not because of the increased price consumers pay.
But all the livestock owners who suddenly have nowhere near to slaughter cattle at scale are fucked. Couple that with flooding the market with Argentinian beef, and a lot of Republican voters are going to stay home for midterms.
They might not admit to themselves they want Republicans to lose majorities, and they'll likely spend the next two years bitching about Dems. But a lot of them just won't find the time to vote when they're getting fucked this blatantly
humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 55 pts · 3d
That is primarily a consequence of immigration crackdowns. Beef inflation up 9% while cattle is down 9%+

I thought drought was a major factor in beef supply drop but it's probably multiple things
humanspiral@lemmy.ca · 26 pts · 3d
Meat packing is heavily biased towards foreign born workers. The companies have complained about high labour costs.
Cattle prices are from futures market charts. The typical market price effects from narratives of "high beef demand" and "Cattle shortages" would be higher cattle prices.
mkwt@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 3d
The US beef supply is squeezed because some big droughts from a couple of years ago forced ranchers to sell off a lot of their herds.
Now, they don't have the herds to supply the demand, and you can't just magick more cows into existence. Once the problem exists, it takes a bunch of time to grow calves into cows.
The problem is exacerbated by a dynamic where the current high prices encourage ranchers to sell their cattle instead of keeping them around to grow the herd.

Nice investigative work - this is the first I've heard about the contamination. It looks like China caught the issue back in March, and its highly likely more of the supply chain was compromised. This would make it subject to further Chinese boycotts, endangering the Argentian economy and screwing Milei because it makes things bumpy for Peter Thiel in his new home.
This is why Trump is both helping Milei and refusing to say where the beef is from.
Btw, these are the side effects of chloramphenicol:

daannii@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
I try feeding my cats boiled meat sometimes. If I cut off the fat or something from something I'm cooking for me, I will dice it up and boil it.
Neither of my cats will eat boiled meat with the exception of my newer cat who was a stray. But even he will only eat canned tuna.
Not turkey. Not ham. Not beef. No chicken.
No lunch meat.
Not even bacon!
I don't get why they don't like the best food for them.
I can't give them tuna all the time because of the mercury.
My older cat likes marshmallows. Weird but it is bone meal based.
The stray will eat some wet food so he gets some every day. But my older cat won't touch the stuff.
🤷
I offer to them and then put outside for a local oppossom when they decline.
I don't like to waste animal products so someone gets it.

And they can't sell American beef to China anymore because well - you know. Before I went to Sam's club in Shanghai it was mainly USDA beef. Now there is no American beef at all. Only Australian. Which I prefer anyway. It's much better quality and less chemicals inside.
BTW China last week rejected a shipment of Argentinan beef because of banned antibiotics so perhaps it will get rerouted to the US. Where the regime clearly does not care about food safety standards anymore.
Treczoks@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 2d
Basically, American beef is a hard sell outside the US because it is full of things that don't belong in food in many countries. Of the thousands of beef farmers in the US, there is barely a dozen qualified to deliver beef to the EU. Think about it.

Damage@feddit.it · 2 pts · 1d
Ok, so one thing I'm terrible at is describing the taste of food, so I'll try my best: it has more flavour than beef, but it's delicate flavour and doesn't taste gamey. It has a shitload of iron. In my experience the taste changes a lot depending on the cut, more than beef, but to be honest, the vast majority of the time I eat horse meat, it's in the form of raw, ground meat.

If you can get as much meat as you're able to from a local butcher.
Befriend the people at that butcher shop. Have actual conversations with them, ask their advice on things, even if you don't think you need it.
The guy that likes you isn't going to sell you questionable meat. If he's any good he's not even buying questionable meat. You might even get discount locally sourced eggs there too.
It occurs to me that some venture capital firms have tried to corporatize and boutiquify butcher shops with expensive, "artisanal" offerings.
Your local butcher probably isn't wasting money on billboard and TV spots. Parking lot will be full every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Case will be full and somebody will be actively cutting something up in the back, which will almost certainly be mostly visible.
