you know what's mildly infuriating? a reposter bot

It's kinda annoying opening the community and seeing posts made only by a single person bot that posts so much that actually genuine content get suffucated, i think we all know who i talk about (if not, it's Sanitation), they don't even link the original post (which i know it's not obbligatory but cmon..!) I can block them though so it's only mildly infuriating, though, it makes genuine posters have less comments (and so discussion)
Please, if you are a mod and read this, i ask to take action and if you are not a mod, please feel free to discuss about that with me and everyone else

I've been conflicted about Sanitation for a while.

On one hand, it's more content. I open Lemmy, and I see a dozen articles that wouldn't be there otherwise. Sometimes they interest me, and I read them. In that case, I suppose I should appreciate that it was shared at all

But on the other hand, all those posts rarely turn into conversations. Sanitation isn't hanging around to talk about what they found, they're already looking for the next batch of posts to steal. I've put a tag on them, so even if I do end up reading one of their posts, I avoid voting and commenting. At worst, I'm talking to a robot, or at best, I'm just yelling into the void.

THB@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d (2 replies)

They just posted an AI slop image of cats in a PC tower masquerading as a personal post of something that really happened. That was enough to convince me to block.

Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

Yeah. Leaving other people's posts in first person definitely makes it feel much dirtier.

sanitation@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1d

"The meow technician on duty" - is a post in question.
Nowhere does it claim that its my personal post. Where is the first person post ? https://lemmy.today/post/59058512

Additionally - if this is AI, then it could have fooled me, I cant tell image is AI sorry.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 8 pts · 1d

Yeah, tbh the whole point of Lemmy, which is a thread centered platform AKA: a lotta of conversations, totally go fuck itself with bots...

HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d

It also is the only source of content for c/shittymoviedetails but those tend to be hit or miss with a bit more misses.

Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1d (5 replies)

At first I read this and was like, "Wait, who?" I went back to the main page and tried seeing any posts by that name. I tried every sort-type and didn't see it. So I looked up the name directly.

Found the profile. In the corner, I saw the button: "Unblock user."

Ha! No wonder I didn't recognize the name. - turns out I already blocked them some time ago! I rarely block anybody, their posts must have overwhelmingly been utter garbage to make it onto that short list.

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (4 replies)

I'm still not sure who we're talking about....

sanitation@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I think people that say lemmy is full of content and by posting content im "suffocating an active community" are kind of losing their story if username of an active user is that recognizable. I think lemmy is starved for content and it shows, thare are just no or very little contributors.

It is truly confusing why would lemmy attempt to stop an active contributor given total lack of content.

atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

It’s the low effort you put into it. Quantity is not necessarily quality.

sanitation@lemmy.today · -4 pts · 1d

It's memes. All of this crap on lemmy is just stolen content for 99% of it. Not sure what you think lemmy is, it's reddit just decentralized and this quality content complaint is just bizarre. All this content gets recycled through all major networks reddit, x, 4chan, Facebook etc.

amio@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

With no horse in the race, I think it's just a reaction to seeing your name everywhere. The fedv genuinely isn't that used to activity and everyone is understandably suspicious in the Age of Slop. I'd like to say that maybe if you proved your humanity blah blah blah, but realistically that wouldn't be anywhere near enough

FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website · 14 pts · 1d (7 replies)

I agree with you. I think it's a bot and thus should be banned, as per the rules.

Just block and move on is okay for trolls and sock puppets. I don't think that's a good strategy for bots. You don't see them any more but they keep posting using bandwidth. They're building up a profile with engagement that will make it harder to get banned down the line when they start using the account for something worse.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 4 pts · 1d

I agree, also, they inevitably suffocate genuine stuff

Grimy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I don't see a rule against bots, the spam rule seems to be about crossposting.

Edit: nvm, I can't read. It is against the rules. Im not certain sanitation is a bot, he probably just has a reposting tool but I think he is curating what he chooses to repost.

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d

I would qualify that as bot activities

huppakee@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

will make it harder to get banned down the line when they start using the account for something worse

You get banned per community, afaik you can't be banned from the total Fediverse by anyone. I dont think an account with more engagement is less likely to get banned for posting bad stuff.

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

You can be banned from a instance

huppakee@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

You're right of course, but you can continue posting elsewhere. Unless your home instance bans you i guess.

amio@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

If it did, the knee jerk reaction would be to find some other instance

atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 1d (8 replies)

For me it’s the apparent vote manipulation that is really pissing me off. At 40-50 posts a day it seems like they are a bot but they could also just have no life whatsoever or a really really boring job (or both).

But I keep seeing them hit the front page over and over with posts that have 40-50 upvotes in an hour and 0 comments. I just don’t see how that’s possible unless they are bot votes.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Usually my posts take at least 2 hours to get more than 30 upvotes so i guess, but also it seems that this community has a lil more users reacting

atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Sure but this post also has 9 separate comment threads in 4 hours in addition to 70+ upvotes from what I can see. I’m not saying that every post is going to look the same but typically a highly upvoted post will have several comments. Given the typical ratio of comments to votes it seems like a weird pattern to me.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 3 pts · 1d

You are right, i wonder what's goin on tbh, though i don't make many post to have a huge opinion on this and many of my post don't have that many comments anyway so idk

sanitation@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1d (4 replies)

vote manipulation

could you clarify to me - what do you mean by vote manipulation? what potential interest or gain could anyone possibly have from lemmy votes?

atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I’m not sure how I could be any clearer about what I mean.

atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I want good content. Not reposted Reddit bullshit.

sanitation@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1d

See that's out differences. I'm fine with reddit content I just don't want reddit involved.

But also - I think you should lead by example and post a quality content then I won't have to.

Swordinferno@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d (9 replies)

Yeah that's what the block button is for. Blocking is a great method for content curation.

Reddit had a ton of accounts like this, and I loved blocking every one of them. That clearly wasn't the majority opinion, though.

I think that mods should only take action if it's too difficult to moderate or the posts are doing consistently poorly. Not a mod, though, so what do I know?

amio@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Unfortunately the fact that you need 400 billion fucking things blocked to make this place less annoying... means that it is annoying. Bot accounts and communities that already exist fifty thousand other fucking places with no activity are way too trivial to spin up

Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I've blocked maybe a dozen accounts that probably aren't even active anymore.

Is everybody else just raw dogging ALL instead of making a subscription list?

huppakee@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d

If my home feed runs out of new and interesting stuff i open all, think a lot of people do that. Have to say I'm not desperate enough to sort all by new or hot.

amio@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

To a degree, yes, how do you build that list otherwise? Most "communities" are duds with no activity. And poor support for aggregating even identically named communities across instances means all of this is a real chore. And how do you even find the relevant ones anyway? I keep whining about discoverability on here but that's just because it sucks

Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

I definitely agree with you there. Finding the communities is not easy.

I think when I first started I went through a 411 list and just started adding things that sounds interesting. Many of them still haven't had any content since I joined, but if they ever do, I'll catch it.

I also follow /new communities, and every now and then I'll join a fresh one if it sounds fun. Again, they may not go anywhere, but I'll know if they do.

Otherwise, I search for things when they randomly pop in my head, or if someone else on here mentions one in particular. Or if I'm bored, I'll switch to all and see if anything catches my eye.

The sheer scale of your hyperbole is staggering

amio@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

What, would it have been any more staggering if I said quintillion?

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 7 pts · 1d

Welp, as i said in the post, i can do it, but their excessive posting is suffocating genuine content which gets way less comments to discuss with

CubitOom@infosec.pub · -1 pts · 1d

Blocking is an option.

I personally prefer to tag users

HubertManne@piefed.social · 7 pts · 1d (6 replies)

sounds like a cm0002 copycat.

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I wish I could use regex for blocks as doing cm0002@* would be nice.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 3 pts · 1d

I feel like that would need to be .* but im kinda wondering if you need to do something for the at but I can't for the life of me think if at is used for anything. you could do the keyword block thing but im worried about using that to much. I have not seen an alt of his in awhile so im guessing I have them all blocked at this point but man has to be more than a dozen. When I go through my block list I have to scroll for a bit to get passed his.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Is cm002 another bot?

HubertManne@piefed.social · 4 pts · 1d (2 replies)

cm0002 was awhile back from my perspective but I have blocked many many of his alts. It was a guy with a thing in his craw for "tankies" and he felt the best way to express it was to make posts in .world that were copies of ones from .ml in order to suppress .ml I guess. I would not have realized but I was posting devils panties to a .ml comics thing and he was doing it and it kinda was annoying me as in my own feed I would see his over mine because I read by most recent. Basically within an hour he would repost. I thought he was a bot but talked with him. Here is the think I was like. Well if you will post devils panties every day I can just stop and just see it in your posts. he was like no. so basically he would only do it for his repost mission but would not make a point of doing it himself to add content to the fediverse. it was kinda funny because I started posting in various other ways and got it to the point where I would post just text saying hey todays devils panties was real fun because or whatnot. He would post with the url and everything even though that was not in my post. so he would do all the work if I posted. If I did not post anything though then he would not post. At that point it was. Wow. This guy just has mental problems.

Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Ahh, I knew I recognized the name, but I forgot why.

I remember seeing all those double posts back in the day and being annoyed for you! I always enjoyed reading those strips. Thank you!

waz@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 8h

Ha. And still more pop up, it’s like a weird game of whack a mole

Grimy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1d (13 replies)

Linking to Reddit is against community rules.

Idk, I think it isn't actually automated and he is picking the content he reposts. I don't really see a harm to it when Lemmy is sometimes starving for content.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 8 pts · 1d (7 replies)

He makes 1,078 posts per month (according to the "activity" stat) which means it's roughly 30 posts per day, there is no way a human makes 30 posts per day without automations of some sort

Grimy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Let's say he has something where he can copy/paste a link and it takes the content and posts it on Lemmy, then 30 is not unrealistic.

sanitation@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1d (5 replies)

automation is not forbidden by lemmy.world rules

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 4 pts · 1d (4 replies)

So you admit it at least (which i didn't expect looking at your bio), though is it good? Especially doing it on such a scale? Can you at least tone it down, because right now it gets annoying pretty fast and you are suffucating the genuine content which is a turn off for some posters which also goes against your mission, please consider posting less

sanitation@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

suffucating the genuine content

where is it? where is the genuine content everyone referencing?
everythnig on lemmy is stolen from 4chan, reddit and X.
Why is this my fault that I can do it faster!?
I feel like people complaining simply dont want lemmy grow, I want lemmy grow and truly replace reddit. I dont want to go back to reddit.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

everythnig on lemmy is stolen from 4chan, reddit and X.

Not everthing, also, this logic is so stupid "everyone is doing X thing so why i shouldn't?" kids think like this, what if we just try to make genuine content instead of reposting and nothing else? the worst thing is that communities like this are about yourself the poster, so it makes zero sense to repost, I can understand reposting some stuff you also find mildly infuriating bit you cannot tell me that 30 repost per day are genuine "i think like this too!"

I want lemmy grow and truly replace reddit. I dont want to go back to reddit.

The PLEASE make content or if you have to repost don't suffucate the little we have with endless reposts, you do more harm than good, 2/3 reposts per day? Eeh tollarable but fucking 20 or 30 it's not

sanitation@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Im not a bot. I post content I like to post. this is not against the rules. thank you.

if you would have contributed 3 posts a day, maybe I wouldnt have to.

Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it · 1 pts · 1d

Look, i think i am gonna stop this convo here because you clearly didn't read all the comment and act childish

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

If you look at his comments they are is kinda unhinged

Grimy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Other than the most recent one where he's responding to someone in all caps, I don't see it. The all caps response comes off as someone tired of all the complaining, not necessarily unhinged.

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Look at the comments that are downvoted

They don't take criticism very well

sanitation@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 1d

people that post 3 posts a year and for some reason demand less content from others. really goes against lemmy best interests.

sanitation@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1d

I don't really see a harm to it when Lemmy is sometimes starving for content.

exactly!!! also im not a bot

ruuster13@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1d

Social media as a whole has been abysmal about allowing content to be cited, linked, or tracked back to original sources. I consider it a fundamental flaw to solve. Imgur was one attempt but big tech was way too greedy and every site wanted to host (read: own) anything that gets posted. This could be one of the genuinely useful problems for AI to help tackle.

cattywampas@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Just block it?

psx_crab@lemmy.zip · 11 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I guess that's why it's mildly infuriating instead of extremely infuriating, it's a small matter that can be solved easily.

vogi@piefed.social · 2 pts · 1d

Yea, but it still makes genuine posters have less comments though (and so discussion)

Hey! Look at that, we almost recreated the original post in its entirety inside of the comments!!!

Sorry, I'm overly pedantic and snarky and actually annoying. Just noticed it wanted to point that out. All in good fun. I see myself out now. :)

sanitation@lemmy.today · -2 pts · 1d (4 replies)

if not, it's Sanitation), they don't even link the original post (which i know it's not obbligatory but cmon..!)

sweetie. I tried adding links at first. Then the same people like you are complaing about how much they hate reddit and dont want any reddit links.
choose as a coomunity what you want links or no links, then come to me. Only this is lemmy - you wont agree on anything.

sanitation@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 1d

jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works · 0 pts · 1d

healthy people don't make for good social media users

Bongles@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 1d

Maybe don't just regurgitate endless posts from Reddit?

Like, this community for example, post here if YOU experience something mildly infuriating. What would be the point of a repost? So we can all circle jerk about hating X company or provide advice to a person that isn't even here to read it?
