I've actually tried the super stuffed fudge one and it had way more filling than the others I've had in my life. I admit I'm not quite old enough to have tried them during the 60s, so maybe they were different back then?

The trick is actually that you are paying the same price for the box of poptarts but each wrapper only contains one instead of 2, so you get half as many for the same price.

Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 20 pts · 2d

Literally never had a complaint about the amount of filling in a pop tart. Poptarts arent even about the filling. Its about the frosting. Filling is juat a lubricant to get the dry cardboard down your throat. That thing will probably lava burn your mouth if you put it in the toaster.

Go get a toaster strudel if you want to up your pop tart game.

These complaints seem more about human stupidity than capitalism.

There are a million dumb products and capitalists have been making a living off rubes since all of time.

The point should be capitalism is only oppressive when the price of a pop tart versus an overstuffed pop tart bothers you.

kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 10 pts · 2d (2 replies)

You get 2/3 5/8 as many. There are four five packets to a box instead of three four.

prime_number_314159@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d (1 reply)

In my market it was 5 super stuffed pastries in 5 sleeves vs. 8 regular pastries in 4 sleeves. In the alternative view, the super stuffed box contains 1150 calories, and the regular box contains 1480 calories.

1.5*5 is 7.5, so using nominal figures you get slightly less filling, much less crust, much less frosting, and more plastic with the super stuffed box.

kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 2d

Oh, yeah, I think you're right. I remembered it was one more packet, but I misremembered the number.

BasedMaquisEddington@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 2d

I had the same philosophical musings while trying one as well!

Ultimately I decided not to buy pop tarts anymore because I’m tired of shrinkflation games.

njm1314@lemmy.world · 50 pts · 2d (6 replies)

We could have tribunals. I'm just saying. There's nothing that says we couldn't set up, I was going to say kangaroo courts but honestly normal courts would work too, but either way courts in which these executives are put up against the wall. We could do that. We could cleanse

i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca · 27 pts · 2d (5 replies)

We could. But Pop Tarts are a poor reason to start a revolution.

Like, I’ll come, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t want the ‘tart on our flag or anything.

papalonian@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 2d

but I don’t want the ‘tart on our flag or anything.

You fly your colors, I'll fly mine.

moondoggie@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d

I dunno, I could see the felon saying “Let them eat Pop Tarts” from the White House balcony.

Leviathan@fedinsfw.app · 4 pts · 2d

All reasons are valid when we have a common enemy.

lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 3 pts · 2d

It's the principle of the matter. All of these executives that pushed enshittification should face consequences. It doesn't matter what their product is.

chunk6235@piefed.social · 3 pts · 2d

They're an example, not the reason. They're indicative of the failures of capitalism to innovate past shrinkflation and repackaging the original as 'more' for more money.

aquafunk@lemmy.sdf.org · 32 pts · 2d (7 replies)

nike bought converse, cheapened the build and materials for the chucks, and sells the original build as a premium, vintage model

radiouser@crazypeople.online · 15 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Is that why I vividly remember my cons lasts forever as a kid but a few months as an adult? Goddamn..

phonics@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Japanese converse are still quality. Nike didn't win the rights to it there. So if youre ever in Japan pick some quality ones up.

massive_bereavement@fedia.io · 3 pts · 2d

But I felt them narrower, not sure if it's the case but shoes here are usually wider.

vrek@programming.dev · 7 pts · 2d

So much clothing, northpole sweatshirts, timberland boots, wrangler jeans .. All are low quality today

Test_Tickles@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 2d

Sadly, it's not the original build. This is part of the grift. They just reset the loop of enshitification back to somewhere that was noticeably "better" than it is now, but never back to the original. Because if they take you too far, you will be able to directly compare and realize just how truly shit it has gotten.

Clutter@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 2d

These day's all the vintage models are basically the premium versions. Same with cars!

orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts · 2 pts · 2d

And what the hell happened to Vans? They used to be built better too. Now I can buy the same size as my old ones and they won’t fit quite right.

phonics@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 2d

In australia they have 'shapes' which is a cracker dusted with flavor but over the years it's become a lottery whether you get a pack with any flavor or not. And now they've released 'fully loaded' shapes which has extra flavor. JUST LIKE THEY HAD YEARS AGO. Fuck em. I boycott. Revolution!

lightnsfw@reddthat.com · 16 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Just bought a box of cheezits that's as small as any I've ever purchased and the box is labeled "Party Size 75% More". I was like "75% more than what?"

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d

They slowly reduce the amount in the box over the previous six months keeping the price the same so increasing profits, then release a "family size" box that contains as much as the original box, but at a higher price.

TheLightItBurns@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d (1 reply)

They need to stop lying and just put “Individual size” on them all because those fucks know when I start, I’m not going to stop until the job is finished.

Joeffect@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 2d

By design...

So little nutritional value and the food so over processed that your body doesn't even register it... its why the Pringles slogan is more true than you realize...

whereitsat@lemmy.zip · 12 pts · 2d (1 reply)

innovative ways to fuck over the consumer and stack profits higher and higher. there used to be people tasked with imagining clever jingles to sell products. at least you could be proud of that job.

imagine being an overachiever and going through university and graduate school and your job is 'finding new ways to manipulate people.'

you'd think if they were really smart they'd realize they're garbage. right???

tmyakal@infosec.pub · 13 pts · 2d

I was friends with a marketing major in college. She did her senior thesis on brand loyalty among effective illiterates. Basically, "if someone can't understand the words on my packaging, what's the best way to convince them to buy my thing."

It really grossed me out.

rnduser314@lemmy.zip · 11 pts · 2d (3 replies)

#notfood

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Yeah, people should just stop buying this crap rather than complaining and buying it anyway.

You still want to eat sweet treats? Buy some flour and jam, honey or chutney. Make some sourdough buns. Guarantee it will cost a fraction of what this processed shit does and should be better for you. You don't even have to measure anything. I do all my baking on vibes.

orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts · 5 pts · 2d

My mom used to make pies when I was a kid and she would use the excess dough to make tarts with jelly in them. Those were the real Pop Tarts to me.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

People should eat whole foods, unprocessed. Examples: chicken, carrots, spinach, eggs, milk, brussel sprouts, onions, cashew nuts, berries, apples, olive oil, etc. Not everyone will agree with these examples but the point stands.

Most people don't do this, though. And, they pay the price in health as they get older.

People are, and should be, free to choose to fuck up their own bodies. And, people do just that. It's hard to say that it's out of ignorance, because the message is presented loud and clear starting in childhood.

Skullgrid@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 2d (2 replies)

anticipating halloween I thought it said "SPIDER STUFFED"

thesohoriots@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d

Just how I remember.

OpenStars@discuss.online · 5 pts · 2d

Only in Australia 🦘

rumba@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 2d

I tried those the other week.

I also tried the originals back in the 70's

The stuffed have maybe 30% more than the old school product.

The stuffed also only come 5 to a box with more air space in the box. They're def selling you less ingredients overall.

yoriaiko@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Hey... its NEW and MORE... how bout the price?

moondoggie@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 2d

The same: new and more

bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d (4 replies)

Moot point in my household. Toaster Strudel or nothing since the 90s, motherfucker.

scutiger@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Toaster Strudels are definitely better than Pop Tarts, but they have also been victims of shrinkflation over the years.

wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 2d (2 replies)

And, they're unbelievably easy to make, super affordable (one ~$3 box of puff pastry [+jam/fruit/bacon/etc] ≈ six boxes of store-bought "strudels"), and simple enough that a kid can build & bake 'em. 🤙🏼

Enjoy! 🤩

p.s. The link basically describes: puff pastry thawed and scored/cut to shape (x2); cooling your filling of choice (hot filling + puff pastry = fail); 1-2T of filling centered on 1 (of 2) scored/cut sheet w/ ~¾" margins; fork-pressing edges to seal (eg. pie crust edges); then, baking the batch and letting it cool before strudeling the lot.

Frankly, if you "par-bake" (50-80% bake time), counter cool (on a rack, so the bottom doesn't sog), and freeze them, then popping them in the toaster as needed is a cinch. 😉

Genuinely happy to help scatter the fog of mystique and point the way for my fellow anons. 🙇🏼‍♂️

Have fun in your kitchen, and spread the knowledge, too! 👨🏼‍🍳

Alexfire@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

Regular Pop-tarts already have about the max added sugar per day for women 24 g, 36 g for guys.

At your next checkup, ask for fasting insulin and CRP test if they can get approved, or it doesn't cost a lot at a private lab to see where these are at. Then you can calculate the following that might indicate issues early. TG/HDL: Triglycerides ÷ HDL (both mg/dL). HOMA-IR: (Fasting insulin µIU/mL × Fasting glucose mg/dL) ÷ 405. This is about the insulin and inflammation axis, gut/brain health, type 3 diabetes, metabolic healthy, leaky gut.

Capitalism innovates*

*profits only, ideas/innovations/new products/streamlined production are extracted using public funds only.

abbadon420@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2d (2 replies)

I'm pretty sure this is already illegal in the EU

AngryPancake@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 2d

I'm pretty sure this happens in the EU too. Recently noticed that in Germany with potato chips, which all at the same time increased their volume back to the old value. Going by feeling, I'd say they were reduced ~1.5 years prior. Was a bit strange because it's different manufacturers...

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 2d

Yeah, food needs to be safe for human consumption in the EU.

radiouser@crazypeople.online · 4 pts · 2d

Still made with shitty beef gelatine too.

Snapz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d

You mean new, more expensive product.

Chipotle just changed their "featured" chicken flavor (at about a dollar extra cost per bowl). It's just their old regular grilled chicken and now they just don't season the regular chicken, so it feels like there is a difference. It was too much cost for them to add $.002 cents of al pastor sauce per pan of chicken that holds like 60 portions of chicken.

Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 2d

How about they start with covering the whole surface with frosting not just 40%

Janx@piefed.social · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

"Innovation"!? 😂 It would be one thing if capitalism was actually working. But it's not sustainable! All these CEOs and companies seem to know how to do is cut quality, layoff workers, shrink packages, increase prices... Eventually, it'll just be a handful of people making 2oz boxes that cost $20 each.

CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Just as the shareholders intended

HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Unfortunately, "innovation' includes marketing innovation.

BilSabab@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

or replacing one-time buy with a subscription.

they had filling?
