What's that genre that you can't like for any reason?

Country in the past 40 years.

Christian Rock.

Contemporary Country.

R&B.

Country music. I can't stand it. The twangs make me cringe.

Johnny Cash and a couple Dolly songs are about all I can enjoy

Honestly? 99% of rap. Also reggae and reggaeton, and dub. Also not a fan of much R&B or Hip-hop.

Commercial pop from the early 2010s. A horrible time for anyone who listened to the radio.

Think Katy Perry, Usher, Pitbull, all that tasteless garbage that still gets repeated 3 times a day on some stations because they dont want to buy rights to other songs.

And that really unoffensive "summer vibes" style edm that was really popular in 2020.

Any boy band music. It's all just so cliche. It feels like none of them have actually lived any of the things they're singing and so just make up the most generic lyrics imaginable. There's no detail, no specificity, no iota of the people behind it in my ears.

“smooth” jazz.

Pretty much any thing with a repetitive beat and lyrics that sound like they were written by a 14yo going through puberty. Basically hip-hop, bro country, and pop for the last 15 years.

I don't think there are any inherently bad genres of music. There is only bad execution of a genre.

Take modern country, for example. A lot of it is absolutely terrible, but even within the genre there are great artists and great songs. Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton are obvious examples. Every genre has its own defining sound, and every genre has performers who demonstrate just how good that sound can be when it's done properly.

That being said... there are definitely genres and styles of music that I have very little patience for.

Anything labeled "easy listening." Elevator music. Modern commercial pop. And, especially, mumble rap.

A lot of it sounds like lazy, formulaic music that has been meticulously overproduced to be as commercially marketable as possible. It feels less like someone had something they wanted to say and more like a committee designed a product that would generate streams.

And that's ultimately my problem. I don't dislike a genre simply because it isn't my taste. I dislike music that feels like it was made with absolutely no artistic ambition behind it.

Jam bands. I get bored.

"Reggaeton" according to Wikipedia it seems. I hate that shitty beats with all my guts. I don't know why though. It's like the most simple and repetitive and bland kind of music. Even techno music has more diversity. Reggaeton is the same crap for 5 minutes.

Another for reggaeton. It drives me out of stores.

Any twang. I can tolerate some fun Bluegrass.

For me it's reggae/dub. I've listened to enough of it so I can say that it's not for me and I don't actively search for it.

Most rap; most grunge; all gospel; everything with heavy distortion applied to voices.

For me, it's almost entitely about the lyrics, so as long as they aren't disgustingly bigoted or have an ass backwards message presented unironically I'm cool with it.

Tho if the "music" is just random, annoying sounds it might also get thrown out.

I can't stand nu metal and metalcore

I love black, progressive and melodeath metal, I love psytrance, techno, d&b, I like a few rap artists, but I can't stand those two.

Mathcore and Free Jazz. I just don't get it, it sounds like random tones.

I would have said electronic, but one of my new favourite bands (The Sixth Lie) is classified as electronic rock. I kinda get it, but it's not their main focus.

I like some techno... once in a blue moon. Songs from the 1995 Mortal Kombat. The theme from House, M.D.. I couldn't listen to it day in, day out.

Not really looking to change my mind, just answering the first part of the question.

Velvet Underground is the only band to whose lyrics I actively listen or read them. Lou Reed had a particular style of writing, with very simple words and imagery, that works great for me. E.g. ‘Candy Says’ or ‘I'm Sticking With You’. Nico, who sang for VU on their first album, also has some great songs: e.g. ‘These Days’ and ‘The Fairest of the Seasons’, both written by Jackson Browne (and the latter also by Gregory Copeland).

Rap. Can't sing, with shitty stupid lyrics.

I, for one, like reggaeton. Although I first got to listen to it at a dance school that taught how to dance to it. Which arguably, is the way to experience it first. There is a difference between say, Bad Bunny's "Moscow Mule" and Don Omar's "Dale don dale"/Don Chezina's "Tra tra tra"/Wisin & Yandel's "Mayor que yo".

I think Rosalia's Motomami is relatively easy to enjoy although it's a sub-genre (neoperreo). I think it's hard to enjoy if you start with the top albums on Rateyourmusic. Don't get me wrong - Plan B's "Love and Sex" is a great classic, althought you need to be a bit further down the funnel ("brainwashed") to enjoy it.

I don't think it's the accordions, they're fine in other genres. I think it's too upbeat?

Im not sure I can say this for sure. I do not like rap and country/western. In some ways they are sorta the same to me. I like a lot of complex melody and varied instruments. That being said there is so much variety and crossover that there are songs that are considered in the genre or elements of the genres in songs that I like. Further there are songs that I don't particularly like but they still have meaning enough for me to. mmmmm. I dunno. respect them for the art type of thing.

Chinese opera singing. Different tonality that I cannot grasp. I enjoy the instruments, just not the singing.

I would say Rap, but it's not really music so I don't think it counts.

Wellll, I actually don't have one in musical terms. I've yet to run across a genre that's totally absent of anything I can enjoy.

But that's in terms of music, the sound, the "vibe". There are some things I just don't have patience for, like most gospel. Plenty of great singers, competent instrumentalists and composition. It's just fucking boring because all of it is about one thing. Yeah, yeah, Jesus loves you and me, I've heard of a thousand times and you're using the same turns of phrase that two dozen other gospel singers have used this decade, and more before that.

If I want gospel, I go to a church, and I don't go to church. But it usually sounds great. Lots of really spectacular vocalists.

The other is for a similar reason, but it's really more about the people. While I'm the sort that art and artist aren't inherently tied to each other for my enjoyment of the art, contemporary christian music is the exception.

See, I've known way too many people in the various branches of that overarching genre. Christian rock, rap, pop, blues, and the general purpose label. The amount of them that aren't absolute pieces of shit when they think nobody is watching is ridiculous. It's the most morally bankrupt grouping of people I've ever run across. I'm not saying every performer in that branch of music is horrible. I'm just saying it's hard to find the ones that aren't.

So, since it's also the same thing as gospel, where every song is about the same thing with no room for anything fresh after decades of songs about the exact same motherfucker on a cross, I won't waste my time with it if there's even a hint that's what it is. I can usually tolerate small amounts in passing, but only small amounts.

Again, it isn't the quality of the music, or even the styles involved. But I'd rather listen to something of lower quality that I can sing along with (horribly) than listen to a bunch of hypocrites sing perfectly.

Don't sing "give peace a chance" if you're a professional soldier kinda thing.

I am, however, still picky about other genres. Nashville style pop country, I tend to get bored with fast. Same with the more experimental jazz (though I've developed a better ear for it lately). And I don't tend to get into the usual pop stuff, it's background sound only for the most part.
