I'm no expert on the oil industry, but something about how american refineries handle domestic crude results in them producing far less diesel than normal. Diesel is being hit hardest by these price increases.
This is excellent. I'm hoping most of the magats rip themselves apart trying to high beam balance their life choices with the reality of the consequences.
Yep, the pain will never force them to look in the mirror. Or if they do, it'll be a magic mirror that shows them Biden, or Obama, or Clinton, or Carter, or DEI, or Transpeople, or Immigrants, and so it goes.
Their phantasm that they look at reality through lets them ignore it. Market freefall or gas droughts can be the fault of Hunter Biden or something, hence becoming Maga isn't a thing somebody who can reflect on consequences does. (Don't believe people like MGT or Milo Yeonopowatever. Their victim act is part of an exit strategy you will see a lot more republicans using as time goes on)

If it makes you feel any better, it's not like poor Americans are doing much better because of the lower sticker price. Federal minimum wage is (still...) $7.25/hr, less for some tipped jobs, and a lot of people with those jobs have a significant commute. It's the same system where the working class is squeezed to the breaking point in the service of shareholder value, just with slightly different minimums for different things.
i remember when gas stations had to fabricate a "1" to put in front when prices first went over $1 per gallon because their price signs didn't have a 'dollars' digit.
Also apparently bunker oil for shipping is now in short supply. Due to it being less profitable. So that going to hit all kinds of international trade pretty hard. It's a bit of a slow motion crash.
"So whatever outrageous price they were charging wasn't high enough to truly reflect market conditions," a free market stan might say. Might even have a point.
Or one might say "the catastrophic war in the middle east, the one waged specifically to drive down global supply to make the pillaging of Venezuela even more profitable, shows no sign of stopping any time soon so if oil companies hold on to their current inventory they might be able to profit from it even more in a few weeks / months as the crisis deepens".

Companies have to pay a fee when someone makes a purchase with a credit card, so gas is generally slightly more expensive with credit card transactions vs cash (and maybe debit?).
If you pay with a debit card, you're not borrowing money, so I guess it's closer to cash than it is to credit. In my area, they don't let you buy lottery tickets with credit cards but you can buy them with debit cards, which I suppose is a good thing. Not sure how gas prices are affected when you pay with debit.
This is funny because Scrump and his little Scrumplings are in Ireland this week. Having left the mighty USofA on Friday,the anniversary of the supposedly most horrific day in modern American history.... Anyway....
His biggest little scrumpling Eric was on the radio talking about how much gas and oil the US produces and how well off ye all are there....Better than any other time in history.
He was really convincing (if you have no brain) and so proud of what his family have achieved- also pointedly NOT ruling out himself running for president in the future. Then they all went to play golf and Irish people were arrested for protesting it. I hate them. DTA

My Costco in northern Japan yesterday: regular gasoline: 145 JPY (0.8137 EUR) / litre. Diesel: 135 (0.7575).
Non-costco regular gasoline has gone as high as 169 JPY (~ 0.95 EUR) recently.
I'm pretty sure the government has price caps and subsidizes things. Out here in the deep countryside, there's no practical choice aside from driving.
