  1. Cold in here

Those poor kids

Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works · 63 pts · 1y (7 replies)

I was doubting if I'm too old to get the reference, or if it's a legit complaint from the kids.

Also, what's wrong with "chat"?

TurboMars3@lemmy.world · 150 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Some kids talk to an imaginary stream chat like a streamer would.

Ex.- "Chat, is this real?" Or "Can you believe this, chat?"

gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 13 pts · 1y (1 reply)

As a 29 year old....

I do this too someone send help I don't even fucking WATCH streams

Dultas@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y

HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

My 12 year old does. One is annoying enough

LotzaSpaghetti@sh.itjust.works · 51 pts · 1y

Probably phrased something like how a streamer might speak, “chat, are we ____?” which I could imagine getting old 2.5 milliseconds after the class starts saying it on repeat.

metaStatic@kbin.earth · 14 pts · 1y

Clearly a reference to the best Aussie band in the world The Chats

Tweaking once was chemsex when it wasn't experimenting with the fine-tuning of your amateur radio array.

Now its erratic behavior like someone on stimulants trying to fine tune their radio array to pick up alien chatter.

porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml · 13 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Tweaking has been plain meth use for a loooooooooong time, not sure what the kids mean by it now

Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1y

same thing, just used in a wider variety of contexts

uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 1y

Acting in a manner reminiscent of being on meth. Spastic (from which we get spaz )

Now I think about it, young people are often high energy because (as I put it) the motor is too big for the chassis hence the need to run around on the jungle gym. So having new recurring slang for someone who is too energetic to be fully in control (i.e. well-behaved) makes sense.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 1y (3 replies)

If it's an language/literature class, maybe it would make sense to ban slang

hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 16 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Ban using slang in writing makes sense, but controlling how students can speak is just ridiculous.

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 1y

I agree. Thinking more about it, if you look at the board it shows hand written, a typo count. Which may indicate it is a typing class. Thereby they would be possibly teaching professional typing for a work environment.

So telling users not to talk about pop culture, use slang, emojis, and memes would make sense in that environment.

I personally prefer to use some, but knowing how not to and "knowing your audience" would depict when it is or is not appropriate. So teaching students to say type a professional email/cover letter/resume/response would make sense to ban such. 🤷 <Devils advocate I suppose. Sorry, been a rough week

Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 1y

how does it make sense to ban slang in language/literature class???

I work with kids, it essentially means ass but has a sexualized context to it. Most kids approaching high school realize this and don't use it as frequently around me, but younger kids seem to think it just means butt. Again this is just my experience and it could vary from place to place

__Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 1y

Yes, my kids and their friends (10-13 yo) say it all the time and it's pretty uncomfortable. They also say hawk tuah to just mean spit which is much more uncomfortable.

They all come from that incel grifter nonsense. You can also throw "femnoids" and that junk in there, but the alpha, beta, and sigma stuff are more mainstream.

They originally come from that nonsense about wolves forming into packs where the alpha males get the girls and the beta males get cucked, but then they had to create a new, better category of males to keep the grift going, so the "Sigma male" became a thing. And then that spawned the "sigma grindset" idea of working yourself to death because that's how you get rich and sexy, and so on.
