Masked ICE Agents Smash Car, Beat and Arrest Local Father Without Warrant in Connecticut: 'Another day in dystopian hell'

https://thenerdstash.com/masked-ice-agents-smash-car-beat-and-arrest-local-father-without-warrant-in-connecticut-another-day-in-dystopian-hell/

A video recorded last week has ignited outrage online after it captured ICE agents violently arresting two brothers in South Norwalk, Connecticut, in broad daylight without producing a warrant. The men, identified as Ricardo Chavez and his brother, reportedly hold legal status to live and work in the United States.

The footage (credit @alwaysfilmthepolice) shows plainclothes ICE agents forcibly detaining the men in a public area. Witnesses say the agents refused to provide identification or present a warrant when asked, instead resorting to physical force and a taser to subdue the brothers before hauling them away. They also allegedly damaged their vehicle.

Community members who know the Chavez family insist that both men are law-abiding residents with valid documentation. “They work, they pay taxes, and they belong here,” said one South Norwalk resident who witnessed the arrest. “This was nothing short of a kidnapping.”

Because they don't try this shit with people who look like they can hit back, most of those have real arrest warrants on them so they can leave that for local and state cops to deal with and just focus on ambushing students and day laborers and people with small children

redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 31 pts · 361d (10 replies)

That's a poor strategy and most people understand that on some level. Either because of the civil rights movement and understanding the value of the moral high ground or because people understand they want violence to declare martial law. That just isn't the play.

Also Luigi isn't a myth.

azertyfun@sh.itjust.works · 29 pts · 361d (7 replies)

I won't comment on whether political violence is the right thing to do, but if you think the civil rights movement was peaceful you've been taught some disgustingly whitewashed history. Ever heard of the Black Panthers? They got in firefights with the police all the time, even though many would later pretend that MLK was the only and unanimous voice for all of America's oppressed.

Also the whole Civil Rights movement can be traced to the Civil War, instigated in part by people like John Brown whose whole thing was massacring slavers in the name of God.

This rewriting of history of America as a nation of peaceful citizens who got their Rights by Asking Nicely fucking pisses me off.

bilb@lemmy.ml · 22 pts · 361d (2 replies)

MLK was the only and unanimous voice for all of America’s oppressed.

And MLK himself is extremely whitewashed. His focus on economic justice and anti-imperialism are typically left out of the stories told about him in media. As well as the fact that he was broadly unpopular with Americans in his time.

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 10 pts · 361d (1 reply)

Also the fact that he credited the Black Panthers with allowing him to be able to do what he was doing by protecting the protesters from retribution, and saying that the only reason that they weren't doing anything more was because what they were doing already was illegal and anything more would risk actual jail time.

Mirshe@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 360d

There's also the armed nonviolent wing that gets left out, like the Deacons and the various unaffiliated armed people who literally did have to be ready to kill in order to defend some of the nonviolent protestors - one SNCC person in an interview mentioned they and a few friends were staying at an old black woman's home after a march in Alabama, and she had half of the local black community entrenched, quite literally, with their guns in her front yard all night, because the police had shown up with what amounted to a lynch mob for the protestors.

I also think a lot of people confuse moral nonviolence with strategic nonviolence or pacifism. You can be nonviolent and still be absolutely armed, trained, and ready to do violence if needed.

There's a fantastic book, This Nonviolent Stuff Will Get You Killed, that really hits the lost portions of the civil rights movement, including the armed wing of the movement.

NeilBru@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 361d (1 reply)

I am an American "person of color" (gods, what stupid phrase... fuck this newspeak) who owns firearms (at home; I live abroad currently).

Here's the exact verbiage of the 2nd Amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Interpret that as thou wilt; we've been arguing about it since about 1791.

For what it's worth, I'd amend the amendment to include this snippet from Marx, just to confuse us all even more:

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.

minnow@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 361d

I don't disagree about anything you said, just a quick note because it's a term that's worth understanding:

"Newspeak" is a concept based on the dumbing down of language in order to make communication more difficult and complex concepts almost impossible. It's not just new words or phrases. If it's not damaging our ability to think and communicate, it's not Newspeak. For this reason, "politically correct" alternatives (like "POC"), as well as increasingly specific terms (like "omnisexual" or "demi girl") don't qualify as Newspeak because they either continue the existing ability to think and communicate or enhance it by being more exacting about the concepts involved.

I'm not trying to be pedantic, it's just important to me that people understand what Newspeak really is because the fascists really are trying to implement it as a means of reducing resistance against them. My favorite example is "climate change" which was a term introduced by right wing think tanks to undermine the more accurate (and more alarming) term "global warming." And it worked.

Anyway, again I don't disagree with your points, so please carry on!

It's not about tolerating the intolerant, it's about not using their same thought process lest you fall prey to the same kinds of propaganda. Besides, removing their humanity absolves them of their sin. This isn't like a house cat killing birds on instinct, these people choose to do this. And they should be treated accordingly.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 360d (2 replies)

it’s about not using their same thought process

It's not even close to the same thought process though. You have to know that, right?

removing their humanity absolves them of their sin.

Also, I take issue with the entire concept of "sin," so that argument holds no water for me. I mean, what a meaningless "argument". How does it absolve them of anything??

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 360d (1 reply)

It absolutely is. It's a thought process people use to make their actions easier to justify to their own sense of morality and empathy. Militaries drill that same thought process into soldiers for the same reason. It's much easier to shoot something than it is to shoot somebody, so your enemy must be less than human to make pulling the trigger easier. So you turn a group of people into the Other. And the more you do it, the easier it gets, and all it takes is somebody convincing you that the wrong group deserves the same treatment.

"My enemy isn't human. My enemy is less than human. Since the dawning of Mankind, this has been the battlecry."

Also, I take issue with the entire concept of "sin," so that argument holds no water for me. I mean, what a meaningless "argument". How does it absolve them of anything??

I don't care one way or another about the theology around the word "sin," but it's the perfect word to describe their actions. By reducing them to subhuman, you make it easy to remove their free will in the equation - it becomes the "just following orders" excuse - and it's incredibly important to remember that they chose to do this. Nobody is born hateful, hatred is learned. They made the conscious choice to be hateful and act this way, and they should be held accountable for that choice.

People have a hard time accepting that the worst people this planet has ever seen are as human as you and me, but to deny it is to turn a blind eye to the fact that the people in that video could be our neighbors, friends, or family. Because we know them, and they're good people, so they'd never do something like that, right?

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 359d

I know full well that they are human, and that any human is capable of vile things... I'm not literally dehumanizing people in that I literally see them as subhuman.

I just have a special category on human for fascists that deserve nothing but pain and death because that's what they are intent on inflicting on the world. They need to be stopped before they literally murder millions of innocent people.

His supporters are primed to think that cities are dangerous places already, and that a city led by liberals is in shambles, and that all the people living there are lawless liberals that deserve punishment.

They are cheering about this because they see it as sending their troops to go hurt others. Whether those people are other because of their race, their religion, their gender, their sexuality, or their political beliefs.

And when these same people find out that something about them or a loved one makes them other they will act shocked. They will protest that they aren’t an other they are in the in-group.

And then they will learn the true nature of fascism. The in-group is constantly shrinking, because there must always be an other to blame. And they will learn that lesson too late.

If 4 years of bullshit leads to a stronger opposition party that can learn from this and make sure it never happens again, great. That's admittedly a big bet against heavy odds but one can hope.

People forget this is the second time trump has been president. The Democrats had 4 years to prepare to prevent what we're currently living with. And they came up with a plan, they chose a doddering senile old man as their candidate then when it became obvious that he was a doddering senile old man they replaced him midstream with his deeply flawed and uncharismatic VP. And she lost, wow, I'm shocked.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · -3 pts · 361d (35 replies)

So you’re not worried about the people who will die because Trump is in power?

the_crotch@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 361d (32 replies)

There's very little I can do about it now. If i.could go back and change it I would. I can't, so I'm hoping the DNC learns from this. I'm not holding my breath. I'm 90% convinced they're controlled opposition and have been actively working towards this.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · -6 pts · 361d (31 replies)

So you’re not, I got it.

null@lemmy.nullspace.lol · -5 pts · 360d (30 replies)

I don't get why they try and weasel around it. Just own it, tankies.

We aren't the ones who could have simple not funded ICE.

null@lemmy.nullspace.lol · 0 pts · 360d

And so, you're fine with what's happening under Trump. Yes, we get it.

Just own that, and stop weasling.

Organized federal financed paramilitary units with a hierarchy and a support structure and a multi-billion dollar PR budget are going to outperform random disconnected vigilantes who are too afraid to so much as wave at one another.

This is the same problem the Spanish Anarchists had against Franco. Its the problem German and Italian Communists had against the Fascist/Monarchist alliance. It's the problem the French Resistance had against the Nazi occupation and the Hamas / Hezbollah resistance has had against the IDF.

Simply owning a firearm isn't enough. You need a community of like-minded people operating in concert towards a recognized goal. That's the difference between the Vietcong and Ruby Ridge. That's what separates successful insurgencies from "lone wolf waterboarded to death in Gitmo blacksite".

Dont you guys have the ENTIRE amendment against this shit? Wear a strap, conceal carry and if somebody tries to literally kidnap you, just protect yourself.

wampus@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 359d (1 reply)

I imagine for most, outside of a larger organised effort, the calculus is fairly simple. ICE agents are likely "itching" for someone to reach for a piece, for an excuse to shoot an "illegal". And it's not like law enforcement's going to show up acting all reasonable to a scene with dead ICE agents too. Anyone shooting an ICE agent would get plastered all over FOX not as a defender of individual rights, but as a case in point for the propaganda machine.

Resisting is an almost certain death warrant. Not resisting you maintain 'hope' that reasonable minds will win out in the end / that you'll only be locked up for a short time.

C1pher@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 359d

You are right in your assessment, but unfortunately, if nobody starts with active defense, it will only get worse and more "accepted" by society. That is how indoctrination is done, in small steps, "checking the water" for whats accepted by the masses and whats not, slowly pushing more and more into the extremes.

They don't need to produce a warrant. Please direct your outrage correctly.

"Section 287 of the Immigration and Nationality Act provides ICE officers the authority to arrest aliens without a judicial warrant."

This has always been the case. It's not Russia, it's not Trump, the outrage should be directed at the "Immigration and Nationality Act" but I guess when Biden or Obama were President it was OK?

Been that way since at least 1990. So, um, when Obama was the Deporter in Chief, I don't remember people jumping out of their skins like now?

Uruanna@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 361d

Was there a daily occurrence of masked ICE agents with no identification smashing cars and grabbing people under Obama? I understand you want to talk about Democrats gladly participating in laws that help fascists, and you're right, but it's still valid to show the active fascist shift by listing the occurrences that pile up now when they didn't before - not nearly as much.

fosho@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 361d

don't call it a warrant then, call it proof that these people are aliens because it doesn't appear they actually have this either. and without that then they are violating a different law.

michaelmrose@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 360d (4 replies)

They actually require reason to believe you are hear illegally not skin color or accent nor presence outside home Depot

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · -1 pts · 360d (3 replies)

Sure but that's different than going on and on about "no warrant".

michaelmrose@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 359d (2 replies)

most arrests in a non-racist US would have to effectively be as paper driven as any other arrest a targeted enforcement against bob who we know overstayed his visa or james whom we caught sneaking in.

The problem with other actions is that they are inherently going to involve demanding papers in a fashion that is inherently illegal. You don't have to anywhere show proof of citizenship to walk down the way.

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 359d (1 reply)

OK but ICE doesn't have to show a warrant and it's always been that way. I didn't invent that, neither did Trump. No one complained when it happened under Obama or Biden, or Clinton, or Bush(es)... Look, I'm just as horrified as anyone else with a modicum of humanity, but blasting the "without a warrant" part in every headline is counterproductive.

michaelmrose@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 359d

Under Obama people here legally didn't fear being kidnapped. Even people in fear of deportation didn't worry about taken to a foreign concentration camp to die nor did he say that the next job was to get rid of the legal ones who didn't belong here.

Get out of here with your bullshit

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 360d (2 replies)

“Section 287 of the Immigration and Nationality Act provides ICE officers the authority to arrest aliens without a judicial warrant.”

Emphasis mine. No warrant. No due process. Not an "alien" unless you can fucking prove it.

And you gave away the game with that last part... If you think this is anything like what was happening under Obama or Biden, you're ignorant or lying.

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 360d (1 reply)

"gave away the game"? What are you even talking about? The "game" is going on and on about something that's not relevant.

Why aren't the articles saying what you are saying instead of stating irrelevant information? They didn't have warrants either under Obama or Biden.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 360d

So you have some articles from Obama/Biden era about plain clothes, masked, agents who refused to identify themselves, smashing car windows and pulling people out of cars without warrants?

So fucking dishonest.
