Hey, it's 80% of reported violent crime. We're just better at it and don't get caught, obvs.

Police are already abysmal at actually documenting reported crimes. That's double so when it runs against the toxic reactionary attitudes common to these departments.

That's not how maths works.

[Excuse me while I "mansplain"] But if women want to increase their violent crimes to match men's, they need to increase by an additional 300%. This would result in a total increase of violent crimes of 60% more violent crime.

C'mon girls! Try harder!

Do your part to achieve equality!

Then maybe men can cease being expected to open doors, put toilet seats down, put women and children first, die in wars, buy dinner and flowers, carry all the heavy things, fend off attackers, fix everything, [(quietly)] die younger, thrive without emotional support, be sole provider as a trad-hubby gentleman sigma-male feminist-ally bad-boy softie stoic emoting funny but only in a specific way and tall but not too tall and looking good with a six-pack without spending time working on it and whatever else in the cluster of impossible contradictions, alone.

If it helps at all, it's not entirely true, statistically, just very slightly funny when not explained. Men are like 75% of the victims in homicides and lead in other violent crimes, if my Googling is correct. Women do lead in other categories, though, so it's still competitive. I'm not trying to take anything away from anybody. But I also admit "borders on bad taste" is pretty much the line I walk.

Quoting crime statistics based on gender:

Quoting crime statistics based on race:

kersploosh@sh.itjust.works · 20 pts · 320d (9 replies)

Quoting crime statistics based on race, like the old "13/50" trope, is often used to enforce racist notions that minority groups are inherently bad people. It's punching down at marginalized people.

This meme, at least as I see it, is the opposite. It's satirizing the usual crap from the anti-feminist crowd claiming that women are inherently inferior. It's punching up at sexist men.

Bennyboybumberchums@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 319d

Statistics put men globally as being 81% of the victims of violent crime. And the perpetrators of that crime being less than 1% of the male population. So to put it another way, youre making the same argument as racists when they claim that all black guys sell drugs because some black guy sold them a joint one time.

This is just yet another in a long line of "men bad" memes, in an online society that accepts and celebrates bigotry.

Awesomo85@sh.itjust.works · -6 pts · 319d (7 replies)

So....statistics are only valid when they promote your ideals?

Or is it that, in your mind, the stats that don't run parallel with your ideals have obviously been misinterpreted or fudged?

Just trying to figure out your stance on statistical data.

kersploosh@sh.itjust.works · 15 pts · 319d (3 replies)

Stats are valid when they are used in the proper context and are not being misrepresented. For example, Black and Native American people account for a disproportionate number of drowning deaths in the US. But it would be irresponsible to simply conclude that those groups are inherently bad swimmers. Just like the way the 13/50 trope is irresponsibly used to imply non-whites are inherently more prone to criminal behavior.

All that aside, this meme isn't attacking men. It's attacking sexist tropes used against women.

teslasaur@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 319d (2 replies)

All that aside, this meme isn't attacking men. It's attacking sexist tropes used against women.

teslasaur@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 319d

Which part? The fact that OP made a sexist joke, or the part where Lemmy(in general) is vitriolic in response to certain statistics?

garth@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 319d (2 replies)

Statistics are just numbers. What matters is how they are used. Anyone who has studied stats knows that it's common to craft misleading conclusions from real data.

Awesomo85@sh.itjust.works · -6 pts · 319d (1 reply)

So what is the "right" way to use them?

So long as they are helping the "downtrodden"* it's ok to see the numbers differently?

I have studied statistics. In my studies I learned that numbers do not lie, people lie. And, as was stated before, people can manipulate numbers to match their narrative.

I've seen studies published as "fact" just because the author manipulated the numbers to match their findings.

This is what we should base our outlook on?

*in this instance, "downtrodden" refers to the person or group deemed savable by those who are looking to be a savior.

I know cal osha requires everyone at all times needs a hard hat on a construction site. I don’t work small private residential cal osha may be more strict on bigger jobs but it is an osha requirement here so I assumed it was a federal osha policy. I know it was definitely covered in my osha 10 and OSHA 30 courses. I was also an instructor for my trade union and this is what is taught in the nationwide union curriculum and yes any heavy equipment we use we have to wear a hard hat while operating nationwide In my trade.

parody@lemmings.world · 1 pts · 315d

Bennyboybumberchums@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 320d (1 reply)

Lets take the worst black man in the world, and then apply his actions to the whole... Lets take the worst woman in the world, and then apply her actions to the whole... Lets take the worst... You get the idea. The lack of nuance in arguments is why a lot women think that men are all totally safe walking home at night. Worse, they think they are at great danger walking home at night, when the statistics say that they are in FAR more danger when they get home. And thats with underreporting of violence in the home.

I mean, men are also victims 81% of the time according to the UNODC. We get 100% of the blame for the crimes, but 0% of the outcry for being the victims of that crime. And everyone seems real fucking comfortable being bigoted as fuck when it comes to men. And the actual number is 91% of violent crimes is done by men, but the % of men that are violent criminals is between 0.3 and 0.6%. So 100% of men globally endure hate and bigotry because of the actions of less than 1% of the total. Does that sound like "punching up" to you?

Digit@lemmy.wtf · 6 pts · 320d

Hush you. Men are supposed to just take it. Women and children first.

No emotional support for men. Keep the demands on them. Keep berating them for striving to meet those demands. Keep taking away their ability to support a family. Keep demanding them to. Keep judging men with the hasty generalisation fallacy, ignoring the statistical outliers. Keep men dying younger. Keep saying "patriarchy" like all men are all advantaged rulers. ;-}
