The man tried to overthrow the legitimate government of the USA and Americans still elected him into office. Approval rating doesn't mean shit.
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 308d
Elections happen every 2 years. Approval polls are taken every 2 weeks. Things change.
bamboo@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 30 pts · 308d
And the voters have an even shorter term memory. Trending downward is nice, but I doubt the shit we're dealing with now will be in most people's mind when they vote in 2026 and 2028.
bus_factor@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 307d
We'll probably have worse things on our mind by then...
AbidanYre@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 307d
No shit. He probably will have nuked San Francisco or something by then.
finitebanjo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 307d
I'm doing my best to put it there and keep it there.
jj4211@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 306d
If in March he announces an end to the tariffs and prices have a sudden relief, then the GOP can sail in on the realization of lower prices.
It's easier to make things better when you deliberately make them worse first. There's the lovely strategic thing of the non-election year.
jaykrown@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 306d
89 million Americans didn't vote in 2024, roughly 36% of all eligible voters, over 1/3rd.
saimen@feddit.org · 13 pts · 306d
Not voting is equal to voting for the winner.
queermunist@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 306d
... so you're saying he's extremely popular?
Kirp123@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 306d
Which just means they stood there and watched as 1/3rd elected him into office. Just because they didn't vote doesn't mean they aren't responsible. It's like three people sitting in a train, one trying to keep it on the tracks, one trying to steer it off the tracks and the third guy just watching like he's not on the same train as the other two.
supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 122 pts · 308d
great, he is not planning on their being another election so it really doesn't matter.
UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 308d
But he had all those "Trump 2028" hats. Surely that means he plans to run again. He wouldn't just troll people for the sadistic glee, right?
supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 16 pts · 308d
Nah if his BK special oldddd ass body doesn't give out on him by then he will definitely "run"...
... in a "fair" election
Pro Wrestling Style election you know how it goes.
BigBenis@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 307d
I recently started following a guy on YouTube who's answer to the doubt over whether we'll be able to vote again is, "I'm not asking. I'm voting". I've decided to adopt that mentality and I encourage others to do the same.
Septimaeus@infosec.pub · 13 pts · 307d
This is the correct response. All that matters is what you intend to do.
You don’t get points for correctly predicting defeat, calling out other’s inaction, or lamenting how unfair the fight is.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but only cowardice tries to spread it among comrades in the midst of the fight.
Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 306d
Bingo. Trump isn't Hitler. He's Louis XVI.
MisterOwl@lemmy.world · 46 pts · 306d
That would be great news, if we were ever going to have elections again.
DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 8 pts · 306d
Nepal has taught the world that you don't need your government to have an election.
CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 306d
That's cool that some people are (finally) figuring out what a total clown Orange Jesus is, but....did Hitler's poll numbers really mattered after he seized power?
Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 306d
He's not Hitler. He's Louis the 16th.
givesomefucks@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 308d
He thinks swing states will see him punish blue states, and that will motivate them to go Republican so they're not targeted...
Instead of the rational response from anyone with a shred of empathy: stopping maga from doing it again by voting blue
Everything trump is doing is setting up a progressive Dem to win in a landslide, and neo liberals lost their death grip on the DNC, so there's nothing to stop a progressive in the primary either.
MagicShel@lemmy.zip · 16 pts · 308d
From your lips to.... well I'm not religious so whatever, I guess your hips or something, but I hope this happens.
krashmo@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 307d
We did that with Biden. Good thing he took his responsibility seriously and went after Trump for attempting to overthrow the government. Whoops, I guess he forgot that part of the plan.
givesomefucks@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 307d
The difference is this time we'll have a choice who the general candidate is...
Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 306d
We thought that until they rigged the primary for Biden.
Remember how he wasn't even in the top 5 until they convinced all the other corporate candidates to drop out at the same time, but made sure Warren stayed in for one more round to knock Bernie out of first place?
givesomefucks@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 306d
If you didn't know Hillary, Biden, and Kamala were going to get shoved down our throats in 2016, 2020, and 2024...
Maybe you should listen to the people who saw it coming back then, when they tell you this time is different?
By you own admission, you're not good at predicting these things, so maybe you should listen to the people who have been good at predicting this stuff?
timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 306d
That's not rigging, that's politics. If you can't convince people to vote for you, that's your problem.
Bernie or Warren could've consolidated too but they didn't. And for all the people that did come out in the primaries, they thought Biden was best.
What youre describing is just being a sore loser.
Signed- someone who got off their ass and voted Bernie in 2020.
Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 306d
Nope. What I'm describing is not letting the people choose, but artificially fucking with the available choices to advantage a particular candidate.
I also voted Bernie, but it was 5 months after the primary was supposedly already decided. Most of the country literally didn't have a choice between active campaigns. I can't be a sore loser of the game was over before I got a chance to play.
Where's the democracy?

Well, what I heard is that Trump's supporter base is strengthening and growing. What if this news is biased, and the reality is even more grim? You know that people are beyond dumb.
givesomefucks@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 306d
I don't understand what you're saying...
You saw something somewhere that goes against every other coverage on this, and you know it's biased but youre still thinking it's true?
Then you say people are "beyond dumb"...
I legitimately have no idea what you're trying to say
druid74@reddthat.com · 26 pts · 307d
If he is still alive in 2028, there is no chance he allows fair and free elections, so this does not matter at all.
Treczoks@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 307d
Does not matter when votes won't happen...
They'll surely find an excuse.
potoo22@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 306d
People have the memory of a goldfish. In 2028, the democratic candidate is going to have some obscure flaw that'll be pushed to every media station and social network that caters to the party that punishes opponents, and most Americans will forget the past 4 years and focus on this one flaw.

I had to put my both sides are the same friend on blast the other day when he said that tired bullshit. They very fucking clearly aren't. You could maybe get away with that in like 1999, but not in the modern era. One side is chock full of fucking cartoon villains.

The 2028 nominee will be Liz Cheney or something.
saruwatarikooji@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 306d
That's what all the labeling of groups as terrorists is for, along with the troop deployment to cities. They are going to try to effectively declare war on terrorism in various cities and states and use that war to suspend elections.
nosuchanon@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 307d
Pretty sure the election was stolen and all those swing states anyway. It’s statistically improbable that he won all seven swing states. Not to mention the election tampering, Starlink, etc.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 306d
Donald Trump has cheated at literally EVERYTHING in his life: he cheated on every wife, he cheats at golf and wins every tournament at all of his courses, he cheats on his taxes, he uses bankruptcy as a money laundering strategy, etc. He cheats in every aspect of his life, but the Democrats want us to believe that he won "fair & square," and millions of people in the swing states voted straight Democratic tickets, except with Trump at the top. They've never produced a single one of these Democratic Trump voters, which only exist in the swing states, apparently.
According to Democratic leadership, the one election that he absolutely HAD to win, in order to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison, is the ONLY time that he played it "fair & square," and didn't cheat. Does that sound the Trump we've all come to know?

Catma@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 307d
I wish I had any confidence polls meant anything to him or the GOP.
Trump is saying we are "at war" eith our own cities, cartels, and probably Venezuala sooner or later. And if we are "at war" no way to have elections right guys? I mean Ukraine did it so he can too.

It's an attempt to keep up morale from people that think we'll get midterms
EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml · 17 pts · 307d
There's probably not a single president that cared about approval ratings in their second term. Regardless of what they may think about a particular candidate at this point between elections, they will vote according to their needs on election Day
watson387@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 306d
Trump definitely cares. He thrives on that kind of shit.
EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 306d
He doesn't care about approval ratings, those are measurements or projections of future acceptance. He cares about right now and keeping his name in the media, good or bad. Anytime there is a lull in his name circulating he will make the most outrageous claim or statement so media refocuses on him.
oppy1984@lemdro.id · 2 pts · 307d
I would say they do care, if their ratings are down then their party is likely to win elections in the midterm. If their party is out of power in the house or senate after the midterm then the president loses power since the other party is less likely to vote in favor of things the president wants, and more likely to launch investigations into the president and administration officials.
There's also the fact that you want your successor to be from your party because 1) it says you did a good enough job the people wanted more of the same, 2) your successor will most likely continue things you've started and help secure your legacy.
In the end remember that most politicians are vain power hungry people, having low poll numbers at any time could hurt their egos and their ability to wield power.
frustrated@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 307d
I dont know why this is relevant. Either he prevented from running, in which case this doesnt matter; OR he IS running in violation of the law, in which case this doesnt batter because if he is willing to break an established precent and law then he would not leave his third term open to chance by having free or fair elections.
null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 306d
... or they just don't have elections.
He's already spoken about it. If there's a "war" they don't need elections.
mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 7 pts · 306d
The worst part is that there’s no actual law about that anywhere. He’s looking at Ukraine’s suspended elections, but that was only possible because Ukraine’s constitution specifically states that elections can be suspended during war. The US constitution doesn’t have any such clause. But I’m sure he’ll try anyways, and the current SCOTUS will let him.

Does it matter? Kamala was supposed to have a slam dunk victory in the last presidential election. Every single post made on Reddit and Lemmy and Mastodon and everything said Trump's numbers are "lowest they've ever been" and what not. In the end, Trump won and it wasn't even close. It doesn't matter what the polls say. In the end, hatred and stupidity won in the last election and who knows, it might work again.
