BOSTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to temporarily block a court order to fully fund SNAP food aid payments amid the government shutdown.
A judge had given the Republican administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But the administration asked the appeals court to suspend any court orders requiring it to spend more money than is available in a contingency fund, and instead allow it to continue with planned partial SNAP payments for the month.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.
BOSTON (AP) — Residents in some U.S. states began to receive their full SNAP food aid Friday as an appeals court left in place, for now, an order requiring President Donald Trump’s administration to fund the monthly benefits amid a U.S. government shutdown.

However, Trump will likely be removed by his own people in a matter of months, and Republicans will pretend to be victims of an elaborate scheme. It'll probably work too, because anyone who is a supporter of Republicans today is a literal moron, or psychopath.

The interesting thing is that that picture speaks more to the problem than any other. That person obviously had a void in thier life. A lack of meaning or purpose. And trump took advantage of that void and used it for himself. If more people had a fullfilling life, there would be no room for trump. But we have been taking thier opportunities away for the sake of corporate profits, and to put this country in one of the top positions of power in the world. I think you can guess that I don't think we made a good trade there.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 292d

solrize@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 292d
If Trump is removed, Vance takes office automatically. The whole point of the VP is to be a hot spare for the POTUS. They would have to get rid of Vance next if they didn't want him, and it probably goes downhill from there.
In Trump's first term, people said his insurance premium against impeachment was very affordable: "just one Pence". :)

HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 292d
Correct, and correct. But Vance will be seen as a MAGA traitor for removing Trump, and they will have a very hard time getting their messaging straight.
I think that would also lead to a power vacuum. Vance might get the big boy chair, but the stringpullers will get antsy with midterms approaching.
Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 292d
It does feel like things are resolving. Trump just got his lowest ratings ever, and last time it took a pandemic, a crippled economy, and a million dead Americans to reach this point.
His acceleration tactic seems to be potentially backfiring. His intention to start wars is his solution, but I'm not sure that will work considering how much he's fucked up everyone's everyday lives. The record-high job losses, the skyrocketing price of goods, the housing costs, loan rates, and rent prices...
He doesn't have the intelligence to fix this. And as it gets worse, so too will public opinion. He's at a 63% disapproval rating right now. And this was before the news about the Epstein files being "far worse" for Trump came from The Department of Justice.
The craziest whacko republican in the senate is now openly flipping on Trump to get those files released. The shutdown is preventing this, and now nearly 42 million Americans are about to be impacted by Trump and the GOP Supreme Court deliberately shutting down their food money.

We are officially in the "Let them eat cake" stage of this MAGA government. Enormous ballrooms, foreign jet bribes, bailouts for foreign dictators, and now they're going to deliberately starve poor people because they think it will make people vote for them.
When we take back this government, this will be the exact reason that there should be at least three seats added to the Supreme Court, and Clarence Thomas should be impeached, prosecuted and imprisoned, along with his treasonous bulldog wife.
They are actively STARVING their own citizens! There will be no punishment too severe for these monsters.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 292d
Nope, historically, these guys never win for long. Eventually they fall, and it is ALWAYS very bad for them. Ask Hitler, Mussolini, Ceausescu, Gadhafi, and countless other dictators whose last day in office coincided with their deaths
CaptainBlinky@lemmy.myserv.one · 4 pts · 292d
Aside from Ceausescu the rest were deposed by outside military forces. Tell me who's going to invade the US and save us?
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 291d
Are you actually saying that there have never been successful uprisings within a country? Because history is full of Revolutions that weren't caused by outside forces.
I can cite the American and French Revolutions, as two obvious ones. We don't need to be invaded to be saved.
And if we have to have a revolution to get our country back, we will have plenty of foreign support for it. The rest of the world despises Trump, even his so-called friends, and if there were a credible revolution, we would have help.
We also have an extremely strong military and legal leadership with all the lawyers and Generals they've fired. I just read how all of the lawyers are forming numerous boutique law firms to specifically fight MAGA policies, with each form specializing in a different issue - immigration, fired workers, etc.
What are the Generals doing? Who knows? Generals aren't exactly known for the candor. The remaining ones were beyond offended at being summoned to DC to have Uberputz Hegseth yell at them, and are clearly unhappy.
The lawyers didn't slink away when they were fired, what are the chances that the equally ignominiously fired Generals, who spent their lives in defense of this nation, are going to just fade off into retirement? Or are they going to want to retire on one last victory, the biggest of their entire lives and careers - nothing less than saving America from a hostile invading force?
CaptainBlinky@lemmy.myserv.one · 1 pts · 290d
A civil war in the US in its current state would destroy the country. The end would be fractured states with their own borders. The US civil war in the 1800's was a war between two sides with borders between them. A civil war now would be neighbors killing each other in the streets. There's no glorious revolution to fix things here. If we don't fix is legally and peacefully, we don't fix it at all.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 290d
We've had a Cold Civil War since Newt Gingrich took over Congress with his Contract With America. It's just now threatening to go Hot.
Your scenario was common during the Civil War. The Union Capital, Washington DC, was very close to Richmond, VA, which was the Capital of the Confederacy. Traitors and Spies roamed the streets of both cities, and nobody knew who to trust.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the final outcome is a balkanization of America, with the Northeast breaking away, the Pacific coast breaking away, as well as the upper Midwest. MAGA can have all the shithole states and their weekly recreational mass shootings. MAGA will lose all access to West Coast ports (they can pay huge tariffs for access, they'll like that), NYC/Wall Street, and they can try to figure out how to survive without the support of the rest of the world, 90% of which will not support Trumpland.
The Northeast and Pacific Coast, and Illinois/Minnesota/ Wisconsin, can form alliances with Canada and Mexico, and surround about 2/3 of Trumpland, and if the MAGAs decide to get froggy, it will be pretty easy to cut them off from the rest of the world, and crush them.
So who gets Vegas? I doubt Vegas will want the shit hole states, they'd much rather join the states with big cities like LA, SF, NYC, and Chicago. Nevada will go with Pacifica.
CaptainBlinky@lemmy.myserv.one · 1 pts · 290d
I feel like Vegas will end up like it looks in Blade Runner 2049. It's so dependent on water from other states that I don't see it sustaining.
CileTheSane@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 292d
You are long past "take back the government" at this point. The flaws in the system have been so blatantly exploited that it requires an overhaul to fix. Three more seats on the supreme Court just means a fascist needs two more people in their pocket to do the exact same thing that is happening now.
HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca · 75 pts · 292d
So this is how you know you're the fucking bad guys, if any MAGAs are lurking around here.
They are either starving people for leverage, or starving people out of malice. That's it. Those are your only options.
If you support a government that starves people for leverage, you're a fucking asshole.
If you support a government that starves people out of malice, you're a fucking asshole, and you're a complete failure of a human being.

Escalation or capitulation.
Escalation means explosion of all the tension that has been building since inauguration, and that won't last long as it will be utter chaos and good for nobody.
Capitulation means Vance. But that doesn't necessarily preclude escalation down the road with him.
If I was a betting man, I'd say capitulation - MAGA politicians will throw Trump under the bus, MAGA voters (read: morons) will reject Vance, Bannon, Miller and Thiel will panic and get messy, and then some people will go to prison.
