Tbh I don't get why all these men who are as rich as god aren't pumping large portions of the fortune into longevity research. Do they not want to live forever? We finally live in a time where we are starting to see real possibilities of growing all organs, and maybe even curing memory loss due to age. And they just, don't seem worried?
They didn't become rich by taking smart decisions, they took the ones that made them money. Climate crisis is what it is today because of profit maximization. Certainly, they also live in this environment. They also get microplastics in their bodies.
They can't figure out how to make themselves live forever, and as they're the richest, they think they must be the cleverest, so anything they can't think of is beyond the human mind and therefore they must create an artificial mind to solve it.
This one freaks me out. Rich people living long lives, long enough to build cults around them that the mortal poor will revere even more than they do now
There's a rational argument for making live extension universal, namely that so long as you increase healthspan you've essentially delayed retirement by X years meaning you get a higher working to retirement ratio out of each worker. Unfortunately the people in charge are not rational and would probably support poisoning the drinking water to make themselves comparatively longer lived by ensuring no one else lives past 60 if they thought they could get away with it.
Let's all grow old get sick and die so that dictators can't stay in power.

Remember, longevity won't mean living forever or be immune against disease and accidents. Also if we would live longer laybe we'd have more time to figure things out and take care of what we got.
Death is the great equalizer, despots leave behind power vacuums to be filled by their many illegitimate children or other parties for vying for power. Good to know that the maximum extent of any of these reigns is 80 years.
As for us living long enough to figure things out, I wonder instead if we simply just retreat more and more into our creature comforts and echo chambers

Medical progress that trickles down to the masses (e.g. washing your hands after delivering a baby) is a net benefit to all. We have however seen the limits of trickle down theory, and are currently witnessing the dismantling of large public medical and scientific resources (NIH in particular was a longstanding pillar) at a speed and scale never quite done before, whilst pharmaceutical companies are swallowing up the talent pool.
Future medical advances genuinely might happen behind closed doors in the future, instead of under the eye of public discourse.
All the longevity research is very public as it is today, and if not both the USA and most European countries becomes dictatorships (and if it do, young or old it will be the same), I don't see that change.

As in literally taking the money straight out of the billionaire funding pockets. But not in parity with the amounts used for AI funding, I just mean all of it. And not simply "all of it", but actually all of it, to the point where they're in soup kitchen lines and panhandling, hoping to get enough to pay for dinner.
Take all that money and put it in science research, charities, etc.
If they can't get enough from the charities back to keep breathing, then oh well. Sorry people that deserve it got it instead, oh well, we'll make a note that we're all doing great on the money that was yours.

I think he's forcing through a stutter. Specifically I think he's forcing through a stutter on hard vowels which begin without a preceding consonant. I have a similar specific impediment and while I've mostly worked through it sometimes when I'm nervous (like when recording) my voice will crack/squeak like that. Words that trigger it:
I, Egg, international, Apple, Ypsilanti...
I also have triggers with words with too many consonant sounds at the start, like jump, which because of the shape of my mouth I form as DJhomp, the dj part shifting into a nearly unspoken H is tough for me.
I spent years in specific therapy, Nigel from NileRed talks like he has too.
Confidence helps. For me it was changing schools at 14, being near people who didn't know my shortcomings gave me the confidence to succeed at talking that 6 years of speech therapy couldn't.
Nowadays when I'm mega nervous I still get tripped up by preglottal plosives like the Hard C in cat. I learned to speak alliteratively in those times because it makes me feel like I'm singing and I never stutter while I sing.
What's the total amount given to AI in a year? I'm curious how many decades we could solve world hunger, provide free healthcare for the planet, AND make advancements in renewable energy.
If we could communicate with dolphins or primates I'm sure we'll use the tech for military use, breeding millions of primates in captivity to be sent to the frontline
The ice bucket challenge paid off in real medical breakthroughs within 2 years by raising 115 million. Komen had a HUGE impact on breast cancer research that lead to real medical improvements that saved lives.
If we dumped AI money broadly into almost any field of research we'd see more people shift toward that field to get funding. We'd see struggling projects get the funding they need to continue. We'd see stuff that wasn't pursued because it's a long shot get the funding it needs. Better staffed and equipped labs where work is already being done.
You'd see an explosion in progress over the coming years.
The last time I ever saw our current dipshit of a president (who wasn't president at the time) do anything remotely altruistic was when he had ice water dumped on him for ALS.

nothing good will come out of this if there's big tech venture capitalists involved. if these guys were in charge of developing a pencil - we would've been stuck with styluses and told that this is peak tech.
