Despite that, they say that GitHub didn’t even respond to their counterclaims, and just shut the whole thing down the minute Nintendo asked.
You are a fly on the wall of one of the biggest tech companies in the world. They have no interest in going to court for you just so you can keep your emulator on their site.
Got Eden on my Steam Deck, runs so good. Nintendo could learn a thing or two tbh.
Emulators are legal, there's enough precedent for that, Nintendo's just butthurt that their games run better on 3rd party emulators than they do on their own hardware.
With the caveat that an emulator cannot copy any copyrighted code to use in the emulation. They try to add as much proprietary code and encryption that it's nearly impossible to emulate without breaking the law.
It's scummy, but people have and will continue to find ways around it. But even the smallest of copyright infringements will result in Nintendo's wrath.
Which is why so many emulators require you to somehow acquire the console's actual BIOS binary yourself (by manually dumping it from your own hardware, of course, and by no other means at all) and drop it into a file folder for the emulator to use.
Even with this they fall back on the god forsaken Digital Millenium Copyright Act (at least in the states). Since they encrypt the system, if you have a key from your own system then it's assumed that you acquired it by violating the DMCA.
It'd be really nice if it was like Wii, where you can have the emulated console do an online system update and bang, there's your whole OS... or failing that, the entire system is on every game disc, just in case... but nooo can't have that.
The problem is, even if you write all the code yourself and require users to dump their own BIOSes and shit, when you get sued by Nintendo, you need the money to be able to hire people to defend yourself. You actually have to prove and most likely convince a judge you're right.
Yeah but you just compared 3rd party emulators to hardware. Switch isn't running Switch games on emulator, but it's still not surprisingl that an emulator on Steam Deck plays them better.
The Switch is ARM (nvidia tegra x1) while the Deck is x86 (amd zen2?). There's translation involved. Not saying that will guarantee a slowdown, but as @FireWire400 said, if the emulator is shit power won't help much. My oc'ed ryzen 5600x could barely run switch BOTW at 15fps when it first released (though that was arguably still better than the experience I had on my Wii U... shudder)
It's basically a bunch of scripts to tweak performance; you can watch the very good explanation by its creator . It does boost performance quite a bit.
Github is owned by a multinational megacorp and has been for 8 years, and given how they've severely botched windows 11 updates with impunity they're clearly only beholden to themself. It should come as no great shock at all that they only "care" what other multinational megacorps want.
This is basically "oh Nintendo! Look over here, your DMCA didn't actually do anything.. But they're over here now if you want to do anything about that...."
It's like people keeping the "secret" of Usenet. Brother, the people you want to hide this stuff from already know because they put in effort to find it. What you're actually doing is suffocating the community for things like this because regular people won't find out about it as easily.
Ok, but like honestly if GitHub kicks off my project then I can just move to another hosting platform. I would be mildly pissed that I lost the stars oh my repo. And then I would be minority inconvenienced that I have to find a new place to run my CI pipeline. I feel like there isn’t that much vendor locking with GitHub. Nothing they do is that unique.
Just google the name of the game with "ROM". You may get lucky and find it quick, or you may have to dig around for a while. Remember always to use a VPN when doing so.
They're hosting their own Forgejo. Forgejo is easy to self host. There's even easier simpler stuff like Gitbucket. If you want something with a ton of features, Gitlab self host but that takes way more resources. Personally I have Gitbucket on my NAS for my basic stuff but am thinking about giving Forgejo self hosted a try. It looks better than gitbucket
I keep wanting to check things like this out, and then I remember there's not even any Switch games I want to play. I tried the open world Pokémon game when that came out years ago, purely just to see what they did (it was boring as fuck, as pretty much everyone agree). The only other thing is maybe TotK, but there's better things (in my opinion) that I still need to play. Shadow of the Erdtree, for example, is something I still need to get around to.
If anyone actually does think there are Switch games worth playing, in your opinion, what are they? I'm curious. I have to admit I avoid most advertising and don't follow Nintendo stuff, so there could be things I'm not aware of.
Super Mario Odyssey - IMO, this is right up there with 64. The game is absolutely packed, biggest in the series, and I love everything they've done with new movement techniques.
Splatoon 3 - And 2, but not like there's any reason to back to S2 now. I've never really been into shooters much, Splatoon, Kid Icarus Uprising, and TF2 are the only ones I've really liked. But I do love this game because it's so unlike ordinary shooters.
Metroid Dread - Hits all the same highs as Super, but with significantly better combat and bosses. Yes, I'm saying that makes it better than Super.
Puyo Puyo Champions - Not actually exclusive, but if you want to play this game online, JP players are all on Switch. So functionally, it might as well be exclusive.
Kirby Air Riders - I waited 22 years for this sequel. I bought a Switch 2 just to play this. And it was worth it. I'm actually blown away by how much higher this game raised the bar from the original.
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have an atmosphere like a Studio Ghibli movie. If that doesn't appeal to you than I guess you won't like those games.
It looks fine. It's more the gameplay that doesn't seem appealing. It seems almost frictionless. There's too many games that do something similar that are more appealing to me. I've been meaning to get into Outward (I own it, but I haven't put the time into it to get far), but now Outward 2 is on the horizon. It's open world adventure, but it actually asks the player to think and put some effort into it.
I mean... The Legend of Zelda also asks you to think and put some effort into it, in the form of dungeon puzzles. It's the gameplay specifically what I compare to the atmosphere of a Ghibli movie.
I've played Outward. It's... Incredibly janky, and also tries to be a very hardcore type of game. I don't think it can be adequately compared to something like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.
They can be compared in that they're both open-world action-adventure games. I can't play every game, and of those I'm much more interested in Outward, because it's trying (and often failing, but still trying) to do something really interesting. BotW was trying to do something others have done, just very polished. I'm more interested in the games who are experimenting, even if I have to deal with a bunch of jank.
BotW and TotK make you think, but in a way that a child can complete it without much issue. That's fine, but that's their target. If it's harder than that then it's too hard for the game. This isn't a complaint, but an observation. It's like going to Pokémon and expecting a challenge. It's literally made for children, so it's not going to be there. It's on me if I go in expecting a challenge.
I don't understand how Nintendo is charging over $100CAD/game and can't bother to hire voice actors for this shit. I tried BOTW and it felt like a shitty asset flip to me that was way overpriced. Sold my switch and went back to just PC and emulation
I mean are they not using essentially the same assets since ever? Every game they put out just feels like regurgitated IP to maximise profits at this point.
Edit: and ref the voice acting, that's fine if they want to go that route, I realize a lot of people like it. But if they don't need entire departments other studios have then they shouldn't be charging so much for the game was my point.
... No? Most Legend of Zelda games use the same style maybe twice or thrice... if that. New style means new assets, new models and textures. So they're not simply reusing assets.
And I strongly disagree. For a game to be priced lower it needs to actually have less value. Not simply be absent of something you're used to in Western games.
I really enjoyed Zelda BOTW. I beat it. Then I did this weird glitch that requires you to beat it twice more without dying once, but you get to keep this crazy Light Bow thing forever. I spend like a week accomplishing that glitch. Then I spent like 6 months hoping on it every once in a while, just to ride around the map and shoot things with that bow. Eventually I lost my game save, and now I don’t play it anymore… I would, if I didn’t have to spend another week on a glitch to get my bow back. Now I just look at it, remembering the good times.
While BOTW is a masterpiece in my opinion, it‘s not a Switch exclusive. You don‘t even need a Switch or Switch emulator to play it. Many people even recommend emulating the WiiU version specifically. The WiiU is a much better platform for Zelda games anyway.
The metroid prime 1 remake is fantastic, metroid dread is pretty good too. Nintendo has a unique style with their first party games and while that's a good thing for the market as a whole, you're right that if it's not your cup of tea there's really not much on the switch for you.
Visual novels are well represented and sometimes more complete than their PC counterparts as it has become pretty dominant in Japan. Other than that, I've never really gotten into Nintendo's first party games either. Somehow, they just don't hold my attention.
I feel the same but what it comes down to for me is I hate Nintendo IPs and for the most part it is the Nintendo games that bring people to their consoles.
Pretty much everything else is available elsewhere. Or at least that is the impression I get. Does the console have any noteworthy exclusives that aren't Nintendo characters.
Pokemon would be the main thing that appealed for me too but I liked red, blue, stadium and that was about it. I didnt play much after that and what I did didnt stick so I think I'd have similar feelings to you towards the new ones.
A DMCA takedown, huh? Sounds a lot like what they did with Youtube-dl a few years ago. And ultimately lost. Both youtube-dl and yt-dlp are still (again) on github.
It sure would be cool if people could shut the fuck up about emulators so they'd have fewer eyes on them. Especially (but not limited to) AA, Polygon, and particularly Kotaku.

PMed

Was this one of the emulators charging people money?

That was Yuzu, specifically their early access Patreon builds if I remember correctly.
Totally optional, but also heavily promoted for being able to run a leaked copy of TotK before it was out.

It sure would be cool if people could shut the fuck up about emulators so they'd have fewer eyes on them. Especially (but not limited to) AA, Polygon, and particularly Kotaku.
