What a comical waste of $80 Billion. Coulda bought two Twitters with that money instead and still come out on top.
baggachipz@sh.itjust.works · 130 pts · 166d
Coulda fed an entire country in the real world

Huh? Ohh, you joke, poors aren't real people!

$80bn for VR Miis that didn't have legs until last year
$80bn for "We have VRChat at home"
northendtrooper@lemmy.ca · 48 pts · 166d
I cannot fathom how $80billion was spent without anyone skimming off the top...and the middle....and the bottom.
Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone · 35 pts · 166d
I’m entirely convinced the whole thing was invented to scam Meta. So congrats to all the people who got paid along the way!

I wonder if John Carmack is among them? I remember him complaining that internal politicking made any kind of progress like wading in mud

He is the forefront expert in WADing

Yes, it was suckerberg.
nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 166d
they developed arguably good headsets and then sold them at a loss
XLE@piefed.social · 18 pts · 166d
Meanwhile, OpenAI claims their losses will get near $80 billion before they start turning a profit. You've got to spend money to make money. Or to fail spectacularly. However the saying goes.
Blaster_M@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 166d
Instead they bought Moltbook, the reddit for ai bots (only ai bots can post)
JustTesting@lemmy.hogru.ch · 8 pts · 166d
Actually anyone can post using the API, and many people did. Lots of the heavily publicized posts were written by humans
wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 166d
wat
ICastFist@programming.dev · 8 pts · 166d
zuckerbot needed friends just like him, so he bought them

The best comment on this I've seen...
...yet. 😈
nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 25 pts · 166d
this is happening on VRChat, not meta horizon worlds
dustyData@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 166d
Because meta wasn't good for it, hence why it wasn't popular at all.
nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 166d
thanks
night_petal@piefed.social · 3 pts · 165d
It's been happening on Second Life for quite a long time now.

Let me introduce you to Resonite.

God dam I miss second life.
Luci@lemmy.ca · 77 pts · 166d
Tbh I always thought it was unreleased and still being developed. My shock when I found out it was available and no one used it.
Came off like VRChat for idiots.
PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social · 16 pts · 166d
They tried REALLY hard to get us to use it for meetings when I worked there, but nobody wanted to give up their legs ¯\(ツ)/¯
Luci@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 166d
I hope work didn’t buy headsets for everyone just for that
PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social · 6 pts · 165d
Nah, they just told us to use our own if we had them. And of course, we couldn't get a discount on them or anything, either.
eleijeep@piefed.social · 4 pts · 165d
If you don't have legs then how can you go pantsless in a video call? Checkmate Zuck!
jqubed@lemmy.world · 45 pts · 166d
Reading the article, Horizon Worlds is not shutting down, just the VR access. Apparently they’ve moved it to apps you access on iPhone and Android. I see the appeal even less; that seems like Second Life mobile.
rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social · 19 pts · 166d
I loaded up my vr headset the other day for the first time in.... A year? Maybe more.
And I was surprised to find my own custom decorated room was gone and instead I had a balcony to that Horizon place.
I could see little people running and jumping around and some portals or doorways and other stuff.
Is that what they are shutting down?
So what happens to VR headsets' "home screen"?
Does it go back to the way it was?
Shindo66@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 166d
That is what they are shutting down. It was just a way to try to advertise stuff.
CocaineShrimp@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 165d
And people running and jumping is just a pre-made animation. Not even real people
jqubed@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 164d
It’s probably been even longer since I used mine, which is a shame because it is fun; I just don’t have a good space for the more active games right now, or even Walkabout Mini Golf
comador@lemmy.world · 40 pts · 166d
'Meta will shut down'
Hurray! oh? There's more to the title? Damn.
AngryRedHerring@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 166d
I can't wait for the day that I'm forced to switch from a discontinued Meta to a homebrewed OS that supports my library.
chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world · 35 pts · 166d
I tried Horizons once. Confused TF out of me what its purpose was other than to have random people screaming into mics and yelling n**** at you all the time.
It was not a fun experience and I never saw the point. I play VR games for VR experiences with actual fun in them.
psycho_driver@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 165d
So VR Discord?
andallthat@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 165d
The picture in the article clearly shows a virtual lady trying to kick a guy's virtual balls. I think that says all one needs to know about the experience.
PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 165d
It's Mark Zuckerberg's unlicensed digital daycares.
I've only ever encountered children between ages of 6 and 15 there.
dorumon@lemmy.cafe · 23 pts · 165d
Oh my God it's finally fucking over. I can use a Quest headset again without being inaudatited with ads essentially from Horizon Worlds. I can use the headset again without having to constantly hack it.

What is this word? Like I know the one you were after, but I am so curious how messed it up so bad.

TIL there's a non-VR version of Horizon. wasn't the whole point that it was VR? what's even left if you take out the VR, just voice chat?
zurohki@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 166d
The monetization?
SouthFresh@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 166d
20? Seems overly generous

I wanted them to feel better about themselves
Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 166d
Was this the thing with legless avatars from the uncanny valley? No idea how they wasted so much money - they'd have done better to employ a good gaming studio to make something fun that looked good. Could have saved billions there.
IratePirate@feddit.org · 15 pts · 165d
Good. Now can we call that cancerous corporation Facebook again?
Etterra@discuss.online · 4 pts · 165d
I never stopped.
IratePirate@feddit.org · 2 pts · 165d
Fair enough.
Tamps@feddit.uk · 14 pts · 166d
This is good news! I quite like the Quest 3 hardware, but I hated having Horizon rammed down my throat through the UI. I guess that’s because they were desperate to drive engagement.
Kolanaki@pawb.social · 9 pts · 166d
Does this mean I don't have to see the hideous Meta Horizon avatar of myself I never asked for anymore? They should let me use my VRChat one in the home environment instead.
CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 166d
Come on now, Zuckerberg doesn’t have 20 accounts, 12 at the most
ICastFist@programming.dev · 10 pts · 166d
I don't know why you'd think that, Human McHuman, YesImHuman, NotaLizard, NotaRobot, Normal Man, CEOsRPeople, MeritocracyWins are all owned by zuckerbot

Ironically, this will end up as a upgrade to Meta Quest owners, as they no longer will have that bullshit shoved all over the "Home" ambient.
ICastFist@programming.dev · 4 pts · 166d
Even the Playstation Home lasted longer
Kissaki@feddit.org · 4 pts · 165d
They published an update article.
Goretantath@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 166d
Huh, there were 3 games that were kinda fun that people made, owell maybe theylport them to a different vr platform. Also guess i dont have a reason not to hack my quest niow
realitista@lemmus.org · 3 pts · 166d
I actually can't figure out how to access it. I have some portal in my home environment but I can't go through it.
timestatic@feddit.org · 2 pts · 166d
