Idk. Is this even real? Is this a real thing that is happening? I guess it's a meme insofar as it's a very ridiculous, far-fetched, outrageous thing for the leader of a country to do. And yet, I genuinely don't know whether to think that it's true...
He is moving the forest service HQ out of washington DC and shutting down research. Ive not heard that he's closing regional offices.
Ive always felt like people think of the National Forests as National Parks or preserves, but theyre not. National Forests are mixed use allowing for recreation and industry.
Moving the HQ to the west makes sense to me since that's where a bulk of the forestland is. And we know that stupid people dont like smart people and their ideas, so research was bound to get torpedoed by Trump.
He is also not eliminating research, a lot of research projects are closing but this seems to be more of a re-org.
Some jobs will change and some employees will be asked to move to new locations, according to a March 31 email that Thomas M. Schultz, Jr., the Forest Service chief, sent to employees of the research and development section.
“The consolidation of research stations does not mean a retreat from the agency’s research mission,” Mr. Schultz said in the email. “Forest Service R&D has produced world-class science for over a century, and that will continue. The consolidation is about organizing the research enterprise more efficiently, not diminishing it.”
At least apologists, yeah. The amount of people who I've seen say "Yeah, the Epstein files are concerning, but..." has killed any hope I had that they might come around someday. Instead I'm all in for getting kids into politics early enough for them to form their own opinions instead of those of their parents.
This is so outrageous that I find it hard to believe. The cost of the entire US Forest Service must be minuscule, especially if you compare it to cost of waging unnecessary, illegal, and unethical wars all over the planet.
This is also the second time that he's tried this. The first time was during his previous term, and though he was forced to reopen everything by the courts, the fact that he sold some of the federal land to (I think) oil companies was never acted upon, despite it being illegal to sell public land to corporate interests.
It’s probably so they can destroy climate change research and distract people yet again from other atrocities. Oh and drill or whatever they want to do with the land.
Still seems like it might cause problems but it's not the catastrophic change some people are making it out to be. And the Forest Service isn't just a bunch of tree-hugging conservationists their mission is basically the sustainable exploitation of US forests. So for that reason they are very important to industry.
It's "just a reorg" where they shut down all the research labs (which can't be moved because they're located by the forests they study) and hand leadership to pro-logging lobbyists.
The point is Trump will never do anything that isn't for deeply personal reasons. And he would never do anything solely to save money on the budget, he doesn't care about that at all. So either he does this out of pure spite, because it is a "liberal" thing, or more likely he does it because he has been bribed by whatever industries are eager to turn all that forest into shortsighted profit.
Wildland Fire Management and the Wildfire Adjustment
The largest share of FS appropriations goes to the WFM account. The WFM appropriation funds preparedness, or fire prevention, detection, equipment and training; wildfire suppression; and salaries and expenses.
Overall, in FY2025, 51% of the agency's discretionary appropriations, including supplemental appropriations, were provided for these two accounts (26% WFM, 25% wildfire adjustment).
It’s such a shame. The US had such an exemplary park system, and now I anticipate the days where they bulldoze Yellowstone for a community of golf course condos that advertise their hot spring spa.
I hope the employees steal the data on the way out and give them to a university or some entity who can save them.
This isn’t the park service, but rather the forest service, and afaik the title is wrong: its not being shut down just restructured. National forest lands will stay national forest lands, parks will stay parks, and nobody is losing their jobs.
But I might be misinformed, happy to be corrected.
They’re destroying more than fifty research facilities across thirty-one states, labs that house decades of irreplaceable long-term science, the kind you literally cannot restart once it’s gone. And they’re replacing all of it — the offices, the scientists, the institutional knowledge, the professional independence — with fifteen political appointees called “state directors,” embedded in state capitals alongside the very governors, legislators, and industry lobbyists who have spent their careers demanding that the Forest Service log more, protect less, and get out of the way.
Ah, thank you for the clarification. I am not from the US, so I didn’t realize those were different departments. Hopefully the restructuring has minimal impacts
Shout out to my wife's uncle, the nature photographer who loves hiking and nature and voted for this chode to stop the woke mind virus. How's that going bud?
It makes my fucking blood boil and I don't even live in the USA. For all the problems your country has, the parks, the forestry, the public land and wild spaces are truly unique and precious assets, even looking at it in a global sense rather than a national one. Something worth defending tooth and nail. So of course Trump would want to destroy all of that, because if he didn't, you could still make the case that he hadn't really irredeemably and permanently ruined every single aspect of the country.
As someone who has a degree in wildlife conservation and has always been my dream to work for the Forest Services and have a career protecting what is left of this nation's natural wonder.
And they are doing this explicitly for the purposes of letting the logging and oil industry rape these natural wonders for fucking profit. For fake, imaginary fucking social value of which they already possess an obscene amount.
Imagine what a tiny increment in their profit margins this will produce, what an infinitesimal impact it will have on the wealth, and standard of living of a handful of individuals. And for this they will fuck up an irreplaceable natural heritage which is there for the whole world. It shows that the value such people place on our coexistence with the natural world is zero or less. Maybe they hate it because they can't understand why normal people love it. Maybe it's just that they will feel richer, in a relative sense, when they have made us all poorer.
Trust, I am well aware. Part of a conservation degree is economics, because conservation directly has to argue in economic terms in order to persuade governments and stakeholders for support of passing legislation.
Unfortunately, the powers that be seem to have stopped caring entirely, ceasing to even performatively care. They want it all and they don't wish to negotiate anymore.
To be fair, in many ways the president doesn't have the power. But Republicans in congress are complicit, so when he does incredibly illegal, batshit crazy stuff, none of the mechanisms to keep him in check function. Him being president is a big problem, but the real problem here is the complete abdication of responsibility by those meant to check him.
What is happening with this administration is exposing the great flaw of electoralism that anarchists and other leftists have been warning about for nearly a century.
That if we do not restructure our society, our politics and our culture leave us manipulatable to where these corrupt individuals could systematically consolidate power and out themselves or their allies into positions of power.
This is the result of not a decade but over a century of political and systemic manipulation by the owning-class.
Living in the US during this time has radicalized me so much against the system.
I don't think it's so much "fear" of defying the president as it is they're getting what they want from him (white christo-fascism), and they're getting bribed by the same people. Most of the Dems are also dependant on the same interests as well (not necessarily the white Christian-nationalist stuff, but the same money). The concentration of wealth has put far too much power into too few hands. These same people are heavily influencing politics and public opinion worldwide. Idk, how we get out of this mess; have to bring the entire global economic system to its knees; forcibly redistribute their wealth or make it worthless I guess.
To be fair, in many ways the president doesn’t have the power.
Yeah. Want a minimum wage increase, legal cannabis, childcare, family leave, protecting Roe, protecting democracy itself, pursuing justice for January 6 or Epstein's victims, and the president is conveniently powerless.
Want to ignore the law to sell weapons for genocide and the president is fucking omnipotent.
He is de facto incredibly powerful, but he is de jure not. He's only capable of doing those things because the checks and balances failed through the coordinated efforts of hundreds of Republican congressmen. Every heinous act that goes unchecked bears the implicit seal of approval of the entire Republican party. He could do many of the things you claim he's powerless to do, too, but he doesn't want to, and all the mechanisms meant to force him to have failed.
I was talking about the previous administration. I don't expect anything good out of this one. And I was a fool to expect anything good out of the last one.
That's definitely true, but I'd still say the president shouldn't even have the power to issue such decrees. Many of these things wouldn't even happen if the president would first have to convince the legislative body (even if controlled by his own party) to write a law.
Reverting an already issued decree is harder than saying no beforehand, and politically much more delicate.
The decrees are basically glorified memos. They hold little to no legal weight in and of themselves, except that they direct the agencies that work under the president's control, so it's less legally binding document and more written order from your boss. The problem is that he writes ones directing them to do illegal shit, and they just do it because they know Trump and the rest of the Republicans spent decades packing the courts to protect them when this day came, and if they packed the courts, they're sure as hell not gonna ruin all that work by properly using their congressional powers.
I mean. You have to give it to them. They are really going all in on destroying anything that actually made America great.
I’m not sure if that was the original goal, or even the intent now, but even with how terrible this news is, if the goal is to systematically dismantle a country, these guys are very very good at it.
I guess you are right. The staggering thing for me is the shear apathy required to do what they are doing. It’s revolting and frankly terrifying, but fascinating.
There is a yet to be diagnosed mental illness involved here, for so many people to so callously trumpet and parade toward things that actively and directly hurt them as well, just to prove some imaginary point.
It’s like psychopathy mixed with a side of Stockholm flavoured bias soup.
It's like whoever is directing his actions just wants to twist the knife a bit. But there are so many evil fucks to choose from that it doesn't really narrow it down. Could be a Putin "fuck the americans" thing, could be a Miller "fuck everybody" thing, who knows.
The Confederates Republicans have spent decades laying the groundwork for this. Every GOP member “elected” or appointed to any role has helped pave the way.
jumpstarted by reagan, and helped along by gingrich and mitch mcconnel, newt was significant in founding the "never work with the dems on anything, until they cave you demands" in the 90s.
Ya know, if the Democrats fucked off to conservative land and the Republicans fucked off to hell then the US could be a place where actual progressives are the opposition you could be voting for.
And look at how pathetically weak the Democrats have been during all this. They wouldn’t have do fuck-all if Harris was elected. Ya’ll need to stop praising the knife because it’s quieter than the gun.
He also allowed the GOP to, once again, get away with literal treason and face no real consequences. Harris was his VP during it all, too. They do a little bit of good for the headlines but are functionally useless when it comes to addressing the major systemic issues that keep pushing that country to the right. Their pathetic complacency is a major reason why the far-right was able to get a foothold and they continue to show that they don’t really give a fuck.
I’m not stupid, I do know that Biden’s administration did ok at a handful of things, it’s just wild that you believe that’s enough. It’s like saying you had a good day because your partner didn’t hit you as though that should be remarkable. Ya’ll’re in an abusive relationship and need to figure that shit out yesterday.
I don't think it's enough, but it is enough to vote for them over trump. If you feel otherwise I can only suspect you are privileged enough to not be effected by Trump's actions, great for you, not great for the people being killed by ICE or blown up outside schools.
If there was another viable option I absolutely would not have voted for Kamala, but there wasn't so how is not voting supposed to be the better option?
Yes, I am privileged. I still do not see even a shred of worth in allowing the situation to get even worse next time around. They call it “strategic” voting but there’s not an ounce of good strategy and planning in that, just reactionary fear driving a short-term mistake that has historically only snowballed into a worse and worse situation.
I voted NDP here in Canada. People here would say that I threw away my vote, but in the end I used my vote to speak with my own voice and they freely gave their approval to a centrist government that is failing miserably and leading this country and whose approach is based in jerking off corporations at the expense of everyone else. The Democrats, like our Liberal Party here, are still far too confident that they’ll be able to run the same old “not the GOP” platform because they have decades of evidence to prove that that’s enough and after that they can do essentially whatever they want.
Speaking on the topic of privilege, it must be nice to be able to pretend that a center-right government that continually allows the far-right to advance its interests, even when the center-right holds all the cards, is a reasonable alternative. People still die unnecessary deaths in a corrupt system but, unlike with the GOP in charge, it’s quiet enough you can pretend that it doesn’t exist.
Nah man, no pretending. But there is an evil and a lesser evil. I just don't see any logic behind not voting for the lesser evil. It will benefit nobody and harm more people. I would vote for a 3rd party in a heartbeat if they had a good campaign run. It's pretty easy to tell if a 3rd party has made any kind of a splash by election date. In this last US election there were no other options, period. The Democrats suck, I get it, but those that didn't vote for them are making things worse.
I generally believe it's important for people to view third party options as viable, because really they are only not viable if we believe them to be. But to have a chance to win that kind of party needs an extraordinarily well spoken and revered leader. In this last election we didn't have anyone that got the bill
Even if it wasn’t true, they are so consistently operating in ways that make it functionally true that clearly their entire way of being is just bad. Intention doesn’t really matter if both options are the same level of utter failure.
Thank you. It's rare that someone criticizes the Democrats AND acknowledges that a third of the country (MAGA) would have to die before things could get better.
it's always about the democrats this and the republicans that with you people.
if I gave you the option between getting shot in the face by a Republican or getting slapped in the face by a democrat cock, you would probably choose getting dicked down by a progressive with HIV and blame getting infected because democrats refused to run a candidate with a smaller cock.
y'all need to realize that you're just as guilty as MAGA is for allowing Trump his second (and potential for third) term, along with all the horrid shit he's been allowed to do.
but you go on and keep bitching about democrats and railing against the machine you swear you're not a part of. after all, you're getting chewed up in it just like the rest of us.
Wow, that was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. Why are you implying the only other option is a progressive with HIV? There have been plently of far better, progressive candidates in local, state/provincial, and federal elections/primaries in Canada and the US and I’m proud to have voted progressive because they have routinely shown themselves to be more responsible and representative of the working class and far less corrupt than the centrist and conservative options.
If “actually does things that will genuinely help instead of being friendly with corporations and genocidal nations” is a bad thing for you then, man, you’re just a fundamentally broken person.
Wow, that was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.
I'm honored. thank you.
Why are you implying the only other option is a progressive with HIV?
Because in the entire history of American politics progressives are avoided like they have a plague. nobody votes for them because the risk is too great that they won't live up to the hype they build. everybody wants better, but everybody needs stability. you don't get stability with progressives, you only get chaos followed by progress.
...I’m proud to have voted progressive because they have routinely shown themselves to be more responsible and representative of the working class and far less corrupt than the centrist and conservative options.
thank you for being so open about your choice. even knowing that your vote allowed a madman from taking over a country, slaughtering children in both Israel and Iran, even killing American civilians. ripping immigrant families apart, trafficking them across borders.
Yup, complete moron. You don’t want stability, you want familiariaty. You would rather bathe in sewage instead of clean water because getting might make you a little chilly. If anything defines a centrist it’s their overwhelming cowardice.
you know what's absolutely hilarious. I voted progressive in my local elections.
I did that because I believe change can happen. however, I'm not so disillusioned as you as to think that it's a wise decision to gamble on the fate of our country or the world on some green party dumbfuck that couldn't negotiate a happy meal from a drivethru let alone a multi-trillion dollar economic treaty with the corporate economies of the world.
Look, I get all the anger and hate you're feeling. you probably feel guilty for letting all those Palestinian children die, not only but you probably feel really guilty for empowering a sadistic psychopath to blow up a school full of little girls. the countless other children and families that have been bombed to pieces. it's terrible. it's still your fault for not grasping what was really at stake before the presidential election.
here's the neat thing. you, unlike all those people your choice killed, are alive! that means you can still learn!
good luck buddy. I know you can figure it out. we're all counting on you... really....don't fuck us again.
Woof. Deflect all you want, it doesn’t change that your country is a result of ineffective centrists allowing conservatives to get away with murder, if they aren’t doing it themselves. Harris was still going to use your tax money to kill innocent children, she just wasn’t going to post about it on Truth Social and you would be able to tell yourself that she was the best of two options, and now you don’t need to care anymore. This shit happened when Biden got in, and Harris was right there saying she wouldn’t do anything differently.
I know ya’ll have a hard time learning, but how obvious do things need to be for you to see how bad things are?
Hack the voting machines? They did it the old fashioned way by closing voting sites in high density cities, violent intimidation tactics to keep entire neighborhoods from voting, dismantling mail sorting machines, destroying ballots, etc. The voting machines were probably compromised too, yes.
Let this empire burn and 50+ flags fly freely. May these profligates see their wealth evaporate and never be returned for contempt of their weakness, corruption, and stupidity should ensure their inevitable and violent deaths.
I think both are true. When the media is controlled and the populace is spoon fed bullshit for a long enough period of time, people who lack critical thinking skills eat it up and vote against their own self interests. People are also very unlikely to take responsibility for their own actions and find it much easier to blame others for their own shortcomings, which leads to tribalism and racism among other things. The other major issue is the giant wealth disparity causing a huge imbalance of power and influence. Couple that with the inability to have politicians not beholden to that power and money (citizens united) and you have the perfect storm of bullshit and corruption.
I really think the quote from Agent K in MIB really sums it up.
A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals, and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.
Don’t get me wrong, there are people who are just trolls and assholes who are beyond saving. But I continue to believe they are exceptions rather than the norm.
When your interest are fundamentally opposite to facts, science is your enemy. Destroy it, and there is no rational argument to oppose any of your action.
Yeah great, let’s put the logging industry in charge of the forests. Who cares about research projects when you’re going to cut down all the fucking trees anyway.
Damn, it's crazy that we let one guy decide these things. Seems like the kind of thing that should be determined by a large legislative body that holds the power over our nation's budget and the ability to write laws. Weird we don't have one of those.
Eh he is funneling money from everything he deems unnecessary (health, science, nature preservation, education, progressing human rights etc) to pockets of his buddies, Netanyahu and tech oligarchs.
It feels more like he is Netanyahu's attack dog and some of the tech oligarchs with dad issues treat him like one. The others just lick his ass for free pass to do whatever the fuck they want. Of course you may ask "aren't these the only modes of friendship that exists in Trump's life" and you may be right...
I should not need to have new reasons for hating this scumbag. But fuck is dismantling the park system even profitable? Fuck is the point here?
Fdr, like all of american presidents was no saint and maybe arguably a fucking atrocity. But dam the park system he helped give to us americans, its so good what the fuck. Why fuck it up?
Its something to pillage. Its something beautiful to destroy. Its an outside to cull, so people have nothing and nowhere to do go or be that isnt controlled owned and surveilled.
They will allow more logging for sure, but their real goal is transferring it to the state and then the states will give it to wealthy people to "develop".
I'm not even mad at "rake the forests" strategy. But that requires money too. NA forest fire fighting departments have received funding cuts over the last 5 years.
Weird legal theories. They propose that Congress authorizes spending, but does not impose it. Therefore because Article II Section 3 requires "the President to ensure laws are faithfully executed", he then controls how the department functions (if it all, apparently) and if there is leftover money it reverts to the Treasury.
Another 35000 people lose their job thanks to Trump. People who also prevent forest fires. But that has never been in issue in the US, right?
Right?
RIGHT?!?

I don’t know that the masses can go toe to toe with the US police forces, ICE, and all the Rittenhouse wannabes that come out lookin’ to kill and be acquitted. Maybe, but it’ll be a bloodbath because the violence of ICE has normalized that even unarmed protestors simply protesting (or not) are executable. There’s also the issue that even if you’re not killed, everyone’s a “terrorist” and any act of resistance can be “terrorism”. It would be a lot of John Browns until someone already in power withdrew from federal compliance and used their authority to protect their citizens and city/state. Even then, I don’t think local police forces would comply. Their power is now tied to maintaining conservative power, they’d go rogue before they broke with MAGA. I’d also point out that MAGAts use civil disruption as cover to loot, burn, and cover their own violence both for personal gain and to make the cause look bad.
Until we are united and coordinated enough to make sure we’re not getting slaughtered and played, there’s always malicious compliance, weaponized inefficiency, and some others.
So far none of the Trump administration's restructuring has been benign. If an incompetent lackey is put in place, and one will be, they have all proven to destroy the previous work.
Every one of your own sources contradicts your post. Your post is still misinformation, no research has been stated to cease, only that some portion of the research stations will move to a centralized location.
So, you are spreading misinformation by saying the research has been halted because nobody has said whether any research will be halted. No research program has been stated to be “destroyed” or otherwise dismantled.
The regional offices are being replaced with 15 state-based offices.
Same with the research program.
“The consolidation of research stations does not mean a retreat from the agency’s research mission,” Mr. Schultz said in the email. “Forest Service R&D has produced world-class science for over a century, and that will continue. The consolidation is about organizing the research enterprise more efficiently, not diminishing it.”
Destroying is possibly exaggerated but this harsh restructuring program, together with large scale firings of competent researchers, will likely lead to an amputation of the research program. This halfway to complete destruction, in the best of cases and much closer to it if incompetence and malign administration get their way.
President Javier Melei is a self described ancap and the inspiration behind DOGE. Wouldn't surprise me if this is another attempt at shaping things by another libertarian group.
Yeah that's pretty misleading. The regional offices are being replaced with 15 state-based offices.

Yeah this is more of a re-org than an elimination. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/03/climate/forest-service-research-stations.html
Still seems like it might cause problems but it's not the catastrophic change some people are making it out to be. And the Forest Service isn't just a bunch of tree-hugging conservationists their mission is basically the sustainable exploitation of US forests. So for that reason they are very important to industry.
ooterness@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 130d
It's "just a reorg" where they shut down all the research labs (which can't be moved because they're located by the forests they study) and hand leadership to pro-logging lobbyists.

So either he does this out of pure spite, because it is a "liberal" thing, or more likely he does it because he has been bribed by whatever industries are eager to turn all that forest into shortsighted profit.

I cannot describe my anger and loathing.
bampop@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 130d
Imagine what a tiny increment in their profit margins this will produce, what an infinitesimal impact it will have on the wealth, and standard of living of a handful of individuals. And for this they will fuck up an irreplaceable natural heritage which is there for the whole world. It shows that the value such people place on our coexistence with the natural world is zero or less. Maybe they hate it because they can't understand why normal people love it. Maybe it's just that they will feel richer, in a relative sense, when they have made us all poorer.
Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 130d

Most of the Dems are also dependant on the same interests as well (not necessarily the white Christian-nationalist stuff, but the same money). The concentration of wealth has put far too much power into too few hands. These same people are heavily influencing politics and public opinion worldwide. DasSkelett@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 129d
AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 129d
The decrees are basically glorified memos. They hold little to no legal weight in and of themselves, except that they direct the agencies that work under the president's control, so it's less legally binding document and more written order from your boss. The problem is that he writes ones directing them to do illegal shit, and they just do it because they know Trump and the rest of the Republicans spent decades packing the courts to protect them when this day came, and if they packed the courts, they're sure as hell not gonna ruin all that work by properly using their congressional powers.

If there was another viable option I absolutely would not have voted for Kamala, but there wasn't so how is not voting supposed to be the better option?
Soup@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 130d
JamBandFan1996@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 130d

Its something to pillage. Its something beautiful to destroy. Its an outside to cull, so people have nothing and nowhere to do go or be that isnt controlled owned and surveilled.
The obly surprise is how slow its hapoening.

Not so fun fact: Forest fires over last 6 years have made global forests net carbon emitters instead of sinks.

Yeah, its not fun that we live in a place that is now on fire year round somewhere.

I'm not even mad at "rake the forests" strategy. But that requires money too. NA forest fire fighting departments have received funding cuts over the last 5 years.

Please provide sources with posts from prominent people. A lot of altered and fake posts tend to be spread.
This looks like it may be one of them as only parts of the forest service are closing as far as a fast search can tell.

Weird legal theories. They propose that Congress authorizes spending, but does not impose it. Therefore because Article II Section 3 requires "the President to ensure laws are faithfully executed", he then controls how the department functions (if it all, apparently) and if there is leftover money it reverts to the Treasury.

Not that I like the restructure but accuracy matters.
Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca · 19 pts · 130d

Every one of your own sources contradicts your post. Your post is still misinformation, no research has been stated to cease, only that some portion of the research stations will move to a centralized location.
So, you are spreading misinformation by saying the research has been halted because nobody has said whether any research will be halted. No research program has been stated to be “destroyed” or otherwise dismantled.
fossilesque@mander.xyz · 18 pts · 130d
quips@slrpnk.net · -13 pts · 130d

LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 130d
Yeah it is highly exaggerated.
The regional offices are being replaced with 15 state-based offices.
Same with the research program.

Jiral@lemmy.org · 7 pts · 130d
Destroying is possibly exaggerated but this harsh restructuring program, together with large scale firings of competent researchers, will likely lead to an amputation of the research program. This halfway to complete destruction, in the best of cases and much closer to it if incompetence and malign administration get their way.
quips@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 130d
Exactly. And I dislike this organizational change, and it should be stopped and reverted in the courts if its illegal. But accuracy matters.
