It is own money

Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · -31 pts · 82d (10 replies)

The apostrophe-s construction "it's" suffices for both the contractive form "it is" as well as the possessive form of "it". "Its" exists solely to satisfy the craven pedantry of elementary school English teachers. Nothing of value is lost by abandoning this archaic construction.

"Its" is deprecated.

Downvote all you like; pedant tears are full of electrolytes.

DupaCycki@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 82d

"Its" is deprecated.

Looks like your brain is deprecated.

LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz · 9 pts · 82d

You know, i wasn't going to, but I could really use some electrolytes. Thanks :)

thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 82d (1 reply)

Is they're and their deprecated too?

Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 81d

Not under this rationale, no.

nao@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 82d (1 reply)

If the goal is to simplify, shouldn't it be "its" in all cases?

Rivalarrival@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 81d

The "+s/es" construction typically indicates plurality. "It" is fundamentally singular, so there is no justification for "its".

"It's" eliminates more exceptions to various rules for word construction; it achieves greater simplification.

KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz · -1 pts · 82d (3 replies)

tbh the distinction isn't necessary in casual writing (although it's still considered respectful to use it in formal writing)

thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 82d (2 replies)

the only people who think that the distinction isn't necessary are morons who can't spell.

KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 82d

if it's understandable it honestly doesn't really matter

english spelling is a fuckin mess anyways

Wut? He's pointing out that teachers dipped into their own money to give kids things like this. America's education system is absolute dog shit, and it's intentional. Malyca@lemmy.zip · 39 pts · 82d (6 replies)

Can't expect kids to understand something like. Also I doubt those teachers expect that kind of empathy and compassion from people with incomplete brains.

tetris11@feddit.uk · 13 pts · 82d (1 reply)

gruelling job with little praise

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 82d

And that's even before they have to deal with parents who think their little precious child acting like an out of control chimp with rabbies in a classroom is absolutelly normal.

andros_rex@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 81d

So, you do expect it, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel like shit. My high schoolers said all kinds of horrific nasty shit about me because I was clearly gay, including graphic and specific discussions about my supposed inability to pleasure a woman, which was stupid - but in any other context that would be considered a hostile workplace environment and wouldn’t be tolerated.

Now I mostly work with younger kids, and they do not have a filter. They say things that hurt. When they say those things, I can certainly acknowledge that they don’t have the level of empathy and compassion that an adult has, but that doesn’t mean it feels good.

Teaching and working with kids leads to emotional burnout. You can only handle those sorts of comments so much before it starts to fuck with you, especially if you lack a support system elsewhere.

We shouldn’t expect teachers to be Jesus. At least not when the pay is so shit that most have to have a second job (which also does not help on the burnout end).

This meme is soooooooooo old. I remember commenting about how "it's" is really stupid and should be "their" instead. Maybe it was even back on reddit, which would mean this is a repost of a 3+ yo meme. I know this is true for a lot of memes but its insane that i remember this specific one.

tbh.. 3y is not something i would call old in this context ;)

Wataba@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 82d

I never thanked them because of the gaslighting and unfair criticism directly from them, and the blind eye they turned to the bullying, harassment and sexual assaults from other students. Yes, plural assaults.

I think killing is too easy. Forced internment in a labor camp so they can experience what they've put others through, along with regular death matches of the top earners in the prison population for the entertainment of the people seems more fitting to me.

andros_rex@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 82d (2 replies)

Bro, the parents at the school I taught at had the schools number blocked (if they had cell service at all) because they didn’t want to hear about their children beating the shit out of other children, or destroying school property, or smoking pot….

I had a pizza party once. I got paid $2200 a month and already spent at least $50 a month on supplies (kinda hard to teach chemistry if you don’t have chemicals…) I gave one of my class a pizza party, spent more than a hundred dollars.

Did any of them thank me? LOL. No, they complained because they could only have one slice.

Seriously. I taught SpEd BD/LD/Autistic for 20 years. I can't even get into it because I get so pissed. Parents are fucking garbage then they blame everyone else but themselves for their problems they created. Get fucking over it.

At least my parents over 20 years. Kids were awesome. Gen Ed isn't much better, they think their kid is Einstein and that they've know how to teach them.

My 6th grade teacher paid to take the entire class to Knotts Berry Farm before we 'graduated' from elementary school. The school only paid for the bus and gas afaik.

My point there not being that most teachers should do more, just that my 6th grade teacher was cool as fuck and extremely selfless

so now we're shaming children/adolescents for not being hip to all the dynamics of american capitalism?

this isn't even funny as a meme. teachers are trying to educate kids even if they're bad at it. what are you doing? reposting lame internet wisecracks?
