Another major bonus is the fact that it only takes about a weekend of study to learn how to maintain and repair 99% of bike parts. Also, far cheaper parts. And also free bonus exercise.
I usually look up how to maintain bits on my bike as they become necessary rather than all in one go. Same with buying tools for it.
First get a few cleaning bits. Then a few tools to split a chain and some quick links along with the tool to connect/disconnect quick links. Tools to fix an inner tube puncture. Disc brake bleeding kit and mineral oil.
Tempted to get a proper disc brake alignment tool, pretty cheap but last time I just cut a shim from a cider can and placed those either side of the rotor.
Cyclists think it's cool that I got mine from a co-op that fixes up old bikes. Yeah there are douchebags in cycling, like any other hobby. But you also got plenty of DIY punk types and folks who just enjoy their time on two wheels
Yeah never heard anything like that, my bike was £600. Cheap bikes are the ones under £200. Once you are in the multiple thousands you are getting to pro athlete levels.
While my bike was 300 and I like to say that anything above 500 is too much; I do have acquaitance with a man with a 1500€ bike that has acquaintance with a person with a 30k€ bike Dx
Don't know about too much, but more than necessary perhaps. Mine was £600, probably didn't need to go that expensive but I use it a lot so its hardly a bad choice either.
Then again, got over £200 in accessories with just the ortlieb XL pannier bags. I cycle to work every day, so arguably its pretty easy to justify spending a fair bit. If I took the bus that would cost over £1k a year. So even that €1.5k bike is fairly easy to justify compared to bus prices if you want a decent bike.
I meant more in the sense of how much the price increase of bikes doesn't match the quality increase proportionally. I'm very roughly estimating where biking instead of any motorisation is what I generally commend in any case, even the money save thanks to it aside
Disc brakes aren't fancy any more, or insanely expensive -- and they can be way easier to work on than truing a wheel perfectly to get your rim brakes working just right.
Maybe I've been lucky but only once did i need to get my brake lines bled. Otherwise, just replace the pads when they wear out, and the thing is self-adjusting.
Miss me with that electronic shifting though. We're not airplanes. We don't need fly by wire.
Electric shifting has pretty much 0 maintenance these days, there are no adjustments on the electric derailleurs that bolt on to the frame. Charging it once a month is mildly annoying though and I wish they put bigger density batteries in.
Either that, or make it easier to just hook up whenever I park my bike, or some kind of alarm when it's under 20% or something. Because what happens is that I grab my bike, leave home, shift three times, and then when i'm too far out, find that it's actually empty.
My regular city bike has manual hub gears, which I have maintained once in 25 years, and they're fine.
I'm going to need a source on the fat ass part. I cycled for years when I was younger and I certainly have glutes of steel, but they're not big. I do however find myself very much attracted to a big ass on the opposite sex so if that's true in any way shape or form, I should start cycling to meet more women who cycle perhaps lol

They were especially significant in the US movements for feminism and women's suffrage, as bicycles allowed women to scootle around on their own, where before they were restricted by access to horses and male escort. Also bicycles encouraged women's fashion to allow for pants, which were utilitarian for bicycling sooner than they were for equestrian riding.

For a long time Vermont allowed people living out-of-state to register their vehicles in Vermont and get a VT license plate. They do require inspections but if you were out of state and never actually went to Vermont, the inspection requirement was irrelevant. This was often used by the skoolie (school bus converted to motorhome) community to get a bus registered and legal before it was converted to a motorhome (at which point you can register it normally in most states). And it was used generally by people with shitty old cars that couldn't pass an inspection and didn't have a valid title. However, they closed this loophole three years ago and now you can't newly register an out-of-state vehicle there any more.
I live in an emissions check only state. My car is an EV and I admit I take enjoyment in knowing ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car drivers have an inconvenience that I do not.
That said, I'd rather we had regular mandatory inspections. Cars are already dangerous. We should be productively trying to catch issues that could suddenly cause them to behave unexpectedly.
I mean good to make cars less dangerous but doesn't this disproportionately hurt the poor? Like well off people have newer cars, and can afford to fix any code violations, but broke people are just trying to get to work. If I had lost my janky car when I was just starting out, I wouldn't have been able to ever save up for a nicer safer car. Now I'm broke as fuck again and I hope my car would pass but it's getting older.
I dream of getting a speeding ticket on my bicycle some day. I would frame that thing so fucking hard. It's not often that I can actually legitimately get up to a speed above the limit, but it does happen once in a while.

Okay a funny, where I went to high school, a kid got pulled over for biking too fast. He was going like 20+, had nice road bike and strong legs, in a school zone. He didn't get a ticket but it was funny.
Yup, where I am e-mopeds are a hazard more than the ebike riders. Fat tire e-bike riders aren't around as much as they used to be because I'm guessing they figured out they're not easy to pedal if the battery dies.
The scooters are around they're chill.
The e-mopeds riders I've seen are all impatient and go full throttle on the trail.
It's 15mph on the trail. Usually 5mph on the turns.
15 mph here. And now there's E-Bikes, which I like but they go up to 40 mph, so essentially motorcycles. And nobody wears the appropriate protective gear either.
Most places i feel you can get away with riding drunk. Not swervey drunk, but more intoxicated than you should drive in a car. I don't feel cops really care too much for drunk cyclists.
I mention this, because some people drive drunk in a 2 ton vehicle capable for killing or maiming others. Those same drivers on a bicycle would be better (though there's still a chance for injury and death, more of that risk is to the rider than others)
I personally know more people who've gotten somewhat badly injured biking drunk (clipless pedals...) than who have hurt themselves or others driving... (1 vs 0)
Actually now that i think about it, the car accident people i know are dead, that's why i didn't remember... (2 fatalities that i can think of, not sure if alcohol was even involved).
Agreed. Most people think that biking drunk is harmless, and it mostly is. My friend got badly hurt but she's still alive; and that was part of her turning her life around. Unlike the people i know who were killed by cars.
Even then, another bonus with biking vs drinking and driving, you can get off your bike and walk home with your bike. With cars you can't do the same, and, at least in my area, there a lot of times you can leave your car overnight at places. So there's a huge incentive to drive it or pay for a ticket (which of course, pay the ticket over a DUI, but still).
The utility of attaching your feet to the pedals, either with clipless, or flats with the long pegs, is so your feet don't fly off in rock gardens. Having a strong stance is more important, but clipless helps. It also helps doing bunny hops and things.
The kind of pedal and shoe you use is a personal preference.
That said, she wouldn't have been hurt as bad if she had been riding normal pedals
In the Netherlands, it's technically illegal to ride a bike while drunk (or operate any other vehicle). But they pretty much never test or ticket anyone, because if people start getting tickets for cycling drunk, they're just going to drive instead.

I remember at school they used it as a threat before, the fact that we could get points on our license before we even had one for stuff on a bike. I laughed in too poor to learn to drive.
Florida used to use these sort of overturned metal soup bowl things as turning lane dividers. It was a way of giving a tactile warning to drivers of lane departures without damaging the cars. It was also a way of landing drunks riding their bikes at night flat on their fucking faces. You can guess how I know.

Humans also didnt evolve to live in such SUPER-individualiistic societies annd thats why so many people's mental healths are failing them and we have increased deaths of despair . In fact the countries with the lowest population desnsities and with lower allocation of resources to mental health care have the highest suicide rates

In a car there is a specific blood alcohol limit and that doesn't exist for cycling. They need to show you are unfit to ride. So I guess if you are not swerving all over the place.

FYI, it means "týden", or week in Czech, not a ton. If any major countries except English-speaking ones adopted imperial units, the world would be like this. We would have "pc" meaning "palec" (inch) or 25.4 mm in Czech texts or parsec (3.09 × 10¹⁹ mm) in English texts.
I just don't think children should be using them and I think anyone whose uses them should be wearing a helmet. I think law enforcement should ask people to dismount their escooter or ebike if they're not wearing a helmet and issue warnings or citations. I'm not usually in favor of making rules and stuff but it's just like, we got one thing to protect our skulls if we're on things that can go 28mph which is fucking fast and requires time to slow down then, maybe making the helmet mandatory isn't bad.

Always wear a helmet. Always. I’ve had more people die in my life because of no helmet or non safety approved helmet then any drugs or alcohol issues. Same with my high school class. At our 20 year anniversary most people died from accidents and some related to helmets

Yeah true but you're not exposed to the environment going over 20mph in a car vs on a moped or motorcycle. Like if you're riding a moped or a motorcycle, you should be wearing a helmet. Then again, the only place on Earth where having a vending machine that's hooked up to city water and a tank in a locked box that has a sterilizing agent and sprays helmets in a vending machine for blue bike users, would be Japan. - Someone take this idea.

You think that you're playing an unrigged game, for some reason, maybe because thats a comforting thing to hold onto, that democracy is inevitable and rules and norms are just and eternal, because they seem nice and fair to you.

We got 1/3 of the country that effectively gets 1/2 the voting power.
The game isn't fair, the rules are always changing, and this 1/3 of people would and literally has willingly voted to destroy democracy itself and replace it with tyranny.
You gotta change the rules you are willing to play by... if the real game is how you rig the apparent game, you need to think outside your comfort zone, or just admit defeat right now.

I usually look up how to maintain bits on my bike as they become necessary rather than all in one go. Same with buying tools for it.
First get a few cleaning bits. Then a few tools to split a chain and some quick links along with the tool to connect/disconnect quick links. Tools to fix an inner tube puncture. Disc brake bleeding kit and mineral oil.
Tempted to get a proper disc brake alignment tool, pretty cheap but last time I just cut a shim from a cider can and placed those either side of the rotor.

Yeah never heard anything like that, my bike was £600. Cheap bikes are the ones under £200. Once you are in the multiple thousands you are getting to pro athlete levels.

Don't know about too much, but more than necessary perhaps. Mine was £600, probably didn't need to go that expensive but I use it a lot so its hardly a bad choice either.
Then again, got over £200 in accessories with just the ortlieb XL pannier bags. I cycle to work every day, so arguably its pretty easy to justify spending a fair bit. If I took the bus that would cost over £1k a year. So even that €1.5k bike is fairly easy to justify compared to bus prices if you want a decent bike.

Disc brakes aren't fancy any more, or insanely expensive -- and they can be way easier to work on than truing a wheel perfectly to get your rim brakes working just right.
Maybe I've been lucky but only once did i need to get my brake lines bled. Otherwise, just replace the pads when they wear out, and the thing is self-adjusting.
Miss me with that electronic shifting though. We're not airplanes. We don't need fly by wire.

Electric shifting has pretty much 0 maintenance these days, there are no adjustments on the electric derailleurs that bolt on to the frame. Charging it once a month is mildly annoying though and I wish they put bigger density batteries in.

Either that, or make it easier to just hook up whenever I park my bike, or some kind of alarm when it's under 20% or something. Because what happens is that I grab my bike, leave home, shift three times, and then when i'm too far out, find that it's actually empty.
My regular city bike has manual hub gears, which I have maintained once in 25 years, and they're fine.

I'm going to need a source on the fat ass part. I cycled for years when I was younger and I certainly have glutes of steel, but they're not big. I do however find myself very much attracted to a big ass on the opposite sex so if that's true in any way shape or form, I should start cycling to meet more women who cycle perhaps lol

Actually, bikes really are far left and a tool for liberty. They were especially significant in the US movements for feminism and women's suffrage, as bicycles allowed women to scootle around on their own, where before they were restricted by access to horses and male escort. (Yes, I used the verb to scootle.)
Also bicycles encouraged women's fashion to allow for pants, which were utilitarian for bicycling sooner than they were for equestrian riding.
(Bicycles also encouraged the paving of roads before automobiles dominated them.)
Many opponents to women's suffrage (to women's rights and women's autonomy) also opposed bicycles. Including the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy See asserted that bicycles, especially tandem bikes, were an instrument of the devil.
So bikes are Satan-approved!

For a long time Vermont allowed people living out-of-state to register their vehicles in Vermont and get a VT license plate. They do require inspections but if you were out of state and never actually went to Vermont, the inspection requirement was irrelevant. This was often used by the skoolie (school bus converted to motorhome) community to get a bus registered and legal before it was converted to a motorhome (at which point you can register it normally in most states). And it was used generally by people with shitty old cars that couldn't pass an inspection and didn't have a valid title. However, they closed this loophole three years ago and now you can't newly register an out-of-state vehicle there any more.

I live in an emissions check only state. My car is an EV and I admit I take enjoyment in knowing ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car drivers have an inconvenience that I do not.
That said, I'd rather we had regular mandatory inspections. Cars are already dangerous. We should be productively trying to catch issues that could suddenly cause them to behave unexpectedly.

I mean good to make cars less dangerous but doesn't this disproportionately hurt the poor? Like well off people have newer cars, and can afford to fix any code violations, but broke people are just trying to get to work. If I had lost my janky car when I was just starting out, I wouldn't have been able to ever save up for a nicer safer car. Now I'm broke as fuck again and I hope my car would pass but it's getting older.

Yup, where I am e-mopeds are a hazard more than the ebike riders. Fat tire e-bike riders aren't around as much as they used to be because I'm guessing they figured out they're not easy to pedal if the battery dies.
The scooters are around they're chill.
The e-mopeds riders I've seen are all impatient and go full throttle on the trail.
It's 15mph on the trail. Usually 5mph on the turns.

Most places i feel you can get away with riding drunk. Not swervey drunk, but more intoxicated than you should drive in a car. I don't feel cops really care too much for drunk cyclists.
I mention this, because some people drive drunk in a 2 ton vehicle capable for killing or maiming others. Those same drivers on a bicycle would be better (though there's still a chance for injury and death, more of that risk is to the rider than others)

I personally know more people who've gotten somewhat badly injured biking drunk (clipless pedals...) than who have hurt themselves or others driving... (1 vs 0)
Actually now that i think about it, the car accident people i know are dead, that's why i didn't remember... (2 fatalities that i can think of, not sure if alcohol was even involved).

Agreed. Most people think that biking drunk is harmless, and it mostly is. My friend got badly hurt but she's still alive; and that was part of her turning her life around. Unlike the people i know who were killed by cars.

Even then, another bonus with biking vs drinking and driving, you can get off your bike and walk home with your bike. With cars you can't do the same, and, at least in my area, there a lot of times you can leave your car overnight at places. So there's a huge incentive to drive it or pay for a ticket (which of course, pay the ticket over a DUI, but still).

My friends are mountain bikers.
The utility of attaching your feet to the pedals, either with clipless, or flats with the long pegs, is so your feet don't fly off in rock gardens. Having a strong stance is more important, but clipless helps. It also helps doing bunny hops and things.
The kind of pedal and shoe you use is a personal preference.
That said, she wouldn't have been hurt as bad if she had been riding normal pedals

In the Netherlands, it's technically illegal to ride a bike while drunk (or operate any other vehicle). But they pretty much never test or ticket anyone, because if people start getting tickets for cycling drunk, they're just going to drive instead.

I remember at school they used it as a threat before, the fact that we could get points on our license before we even had one for stuff on a bike. I laughed in too poor to learn to drive.

Florida used to use these sort of overturned metal soup bowl things as turning lane dividers. It was a way of giving a tactile warning to drivers of lane departures without damaging the cars. It was also a way of landing drunks riding their bikes at night flat on their fucking faces. You can guess how I know.

ya something I dont get is why humanity is OK with this 'opting in' to getting rid of all other forms of transit JUST to sit in a car and get unhealthy and probably die quicker.
Our ancestors have been walking , running, or riding on animals or walking beside tired animals for thousands upon thousands of years....and ....humanity has simply chosen to opt out of our ability to do so without examining the risks that this may pose?I feel that huanity has evolved to walk large distance or rather to expend energy when we go large distances (that includes biking and walking beside our tired animals) . So certainly humanity will be having to face some sort of 'issue' cause we have evolved to expend our energy when moving large distances rather than take an automobile , right?
Like humans didnt evolve to survive repeated harsh blows to the head and we see that humans who keep on getting hit in the head from war training, or foot ball or hocckey or soccer have higher rates of being diagnosed with ALS and CTE.
Humans also didnt evolve to live in such SUPER-individualiistic societies annd thats why so many people's mental healths are failing them and we have increased deaths of despair . In fact the countries with the lowest population desnsities and with lower allocation of resources to mental health care have the highest suicide rates
Humans also didnt evolve to take in large amounts of junk food but then not do cardiovascular exercise at all. Thats why heart diseases are the leading killer of people globally.
There's no 'cost' for us giving up walking? Certainly there muust be something. I guess heart diseases is one of those costs

In germany you can actually lose your drivers license for riding a bike drunk (iirc upwards of 1.5 promil)
Once that happened your free to go, but likely liable if you're involved in an accident

In Virginia it's the same but at or above 0.08% (0.8 promil). It's also an automatic license suspension if you refuse to take a breath test.

But I don't want a driving license. Also just looked it up and interestingly while it can be illegal its not like it is in a car. In a car there is a specific blood alcohol limit and that doesn't exist for cycling. They need to show you are unfit to ride. So I guess if you are not swerving all over the place.
Then again, they would provably use the same test result if they did test you. I wonder if you can just refuse to provide a sample... Its illegal not to with a car, but unsure if that still applies with a bike.

Our ancestors have been walking , running, or riding on animals or walking beside tired animals for thousands upon thousands of years....and ....humanity has simply chosen to opt out of our ability to do so without examining the risks that this may pose?I feel that huanity has evolved to walk large distance or rather to expend energy when we go large distances (that includes biking and walking beside our tired animals) . So certainly humanity will be having to face some sort of 'issue' cause we have evolved to expend our energy when moving large distances rather than take an automobile , right?
Like humans didnt evolve to survive repeated harsh blows to the head and we see that humans who keep on getting hit in the head from war training, domestic violence, american foot ball , hocckey or soccer have higher rates of being diagnosed with ALS and CTE.
Humans also didnt evolve to live in such SUPER-individualiistic societies annd thats why so many people's mental healths are failing them and we have increased deaths of despair . In fact the countries with the lowest population desnsities and with lower allocation of resources to mental health care have the highest suicide rates
Humans also didnt evolve to take in large amounts of junk food but then not do cardiovascular exercise at all. Thats why heart diseases are the leading killer of people globally.
There's no 'cost' for us giving up walking? Certainly there muust be something. I guess increased severity and instances of heart diseases is one of those costs

FYI, it means "týden", or week in Czech, not a ton. If any major countries except English-speaking ones adopted imperial units, the world would be like this. We would have "pc" meaning "palec" (inch) or 25.4 mm in Czech texts or parsec (3.09 × 10¹⁹ mm) in English texts.

I just don't think children should be using them and I think anyone whose uses them should be wearing a helmet. I think law enforcement should ask people to dismount their escooter or ebike if they're not wearing a helmet and issue warnings or citations. I'm not usually in favor of making rules and stuff but it's just like, we got one thing to protect our skulls if we're on things that can go 28mph which is fucking fast and requires time to slow down then, maybe making the helmet mandatory isn't bad.

I meant the ebikes or ecycles but I guess times have changed. Back when I was a kid we didn't have ebikes only the pedal bikes. Those aren't any safer, I guess I'm just not with the times.

E-bikes can go much faster, though. Kids on pedal bikes are inherently speed limited.

Are you talking about ebikes specifically or any kind of bikes?
There is more danger with ebikes. They're heavier and they accelerate faster than conventional bikes. I'd be ok with restricting their availability for kids.
Helmets I'm more ambiguous on. They're usually a good idea, but you could say the same for people walking or driving.

Always wear a helmet. Always. I’ve had more people die in my life because of no helmet or non safety approved helmet then any drugs or alcohol issues. Same with my high school class. At our 20 year anniversary most people died from accidents and some related to helmets

Yeah true but you're not exposed to the environment going over 20mph in a car vs on a moped or motorcycle. Like if you're riding a moped or a motorcycle, you should be wearing a helmet. You may not come out looking the same if you fall on your face but your odds of surviving without a brain injury are higher, than if you didn't wear a helmet.
Then again, the only place on Earth where having a vending machine that's hooked up to city water and a tank in a locked box that has a sterilizing agent and sprays helmets in a vending machine for blue bike users, would be Japan. - Someone take this idea.
