Asses of the North

You mean the right wing demagogues on the ascendancy in Nordic countries including my native Denmark?

Obnomus@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 5d (4 replies)

Is it true that if you're single on your 25th birthday, your friends and family will throw cinnamon on you?

Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 5d (3 replies)

It's one of our weirder traditions, yeah, but some of us choose not to do it. I personally had a standing agreement with all my friends, relatives, and neighbors that I'd not participate in doing it to them and they'd not do it to me 😁

They do the same with pepper at 30 btw

Obnomus@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 5d (2 replies)

So its true. I thought it was rumor.

Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 5d (1 reply)

Nope, totally true. It's one of our many bizarre traditions that most people don't know WHY we do 🤷🏻

Obnomus@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 4d

This is what I found upon looking up.

The Danish tradition of covering a 25-year-old in cinnamon (and a 30-year-old in pepper) if they're still unmarried traces back to the 15th–16th century pebersvend — a wandering spice merchant whose itinerant trade kept him from settling down and marrying. The cinnamon-specific custom is much younger: the earliest documented cases come from the 1960s in Northern Jutland, with the folk explanation that friends simply didn't want to wait five more years before "spicing up" their single peer, and cinnamon was a gentler substitute for pepper. It spread nationally by the 1980s and remains strongest in Jutland and Fyn. In practice, friends surprise the birthday person, tie them to a tree or lamppost, wet them down, and shower them in spice — a playful, consensual ritual rather than a law, though popularly dubbed the "Age 25 Rule." The 25-year-old earns the title kanelsvend (or kanelmø for women); at 30, pebersvend (or pebermø).

Okay so an earlier version of this script...you can tell what it is, it's a firstname, prefix, suffix generator. As an in-joke to the show I programmed in "Bob" "Johnson" and "Oh Wait" as the zeroth entry in the lists. It would occasionally pick up the parts in normal entries though, so my favorite one it printed was Slam Johnsonmeat which....please don't.

I wrote this thing at least ten years ago and I've been laughing at it ever since.

Ham is actually a veritable biblical name (as in Ham, Shem and Japhet), and was more common in puritanical times. A chimpanzee sent into space by NASA was named Ham, probably after the scriptural figure rather than importentiously the meat.
