I did a studio session with them about 20 years ago, when they were still pretty popular and before they were widely considered to be a joke, but I was not a fan. When the studio I was working for called me to do the session, my wife said, “Watch - they will end up being really nice guys and you will end up liking them more because of it.” In reality, they were arrogant dickheads, and I hated them all the more ever since.
People at the height of their own popularity tend to be dicks. My mom organized some event with Neil degrasse Tyson during his hay day and said he was pretty insufferable.
He uhh always has been and still is as far as I'm aware. He talks down to everyone, even the camera. And him tearing apart movies was the most obnoxious thing. We know Neil, we know.
That was really what gave everyone the ick. But I defy anybody to say they can't name at least 2 songs of theirs they liked. My mom liked chocolate starfish so much when I was listening to it that she went out and bought her own copy.
I think the whole hating on Nickelback started with people who thought Nickelback was the best band in the world. They're like the most average band in the world. They're not bad, but they aren't particularly good either.
I read somewhere once that their agent would book them at any festival that would accept them. That lead to them getting booed a lot where they didn't match the rest of the lineup. People began to anticipate them and became a heel type character to avid concert goers.
Comedy Central destroyed Nickleback. There was a comedy special or show, I don't remember. Anyway, they promoted the show with a clip from a stand-up bit that was at Nickleback's expense. I you watched The Daily Show, or South Park, you would have seen that ad a hundred times. After that, liking Nickleback was an embarrassment.
What follows is my bad recollection of the joke.
People say that music can incite violence and I think that's true because every time I listen to Nickleback I want to hurt.... Nickleback.
For me it's "Photograph." Such an aggressively sappy and mediocre song. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of an essay I would have written on the bus on the way to school in 6th grade.
I kind of like "Never Again", it's a bit heavy-handed but it's got crunchy guitar and the message is good, don't put up with abusive shit.
Imagine Dragons. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is:
They picked up hate for being marketed like they're some kind of super hard rock, even though they're not. But their music is good for the genre it is. The lead singer was raised Mormon, but is now an activist for LGBT youth.
i think they picked up the hate for being played everywhere and a lot of their songs sound the same. Interesting lore on the lead singer, that does make me like them more
I can guarantee with as corporate and overproduced as that shit is they 100% use autotune. When you do it right you can't tell. I use it in my home studio even, most songs use it across all genres.
It's difficult to autotune screaming and sound that good. As a Windmill scene fan, the problem with Imagine Dragons is not the vocals (the lead has awesome technical abilities); it's the lack of a point.
I swear I ninja-edited it to "point". "Windmill scene" you can search up; it's not too easy to describe. Some call it "crank wave"? Some call it art punk.
I like the song "do anything for love" because it is a core memory of my mama singing her heart out to it while we were driving to the beach in Clearwater. I was like 5 or 6.
I can close my eyes and see her now.
Boy, am I glad I'm moving my family back in with my ma. Being she got stage 4. Thank you for reminding me of this memory.
I don't think being pro-Trump and then realising he was a sack of shit and then becoming anti-Trump necessarily counts as being a terrible human being.
His only other controversial stuff seems to be being a climate change denier and anti-vaxxer but I put that down to stupidity over any malice on his part.
Plus you can argue that Jim Steinman was a bigger part of Loafs music than Loaf himself.
Gotcha. Ghost is a metal pop concept band, where the front man is an ongoing chain of satanic antipopes (while still being the same dude in face paint). Only they are all really bad at converting the world to Satan worship on account of doing the actual work is no fun, and what's the point of being the satanic antipope if you aren't gonna have fun.
Sounds great! Only...
Metalheads are like "this isn't metal" and they're kinda right. Its pop music, but metal and satanic.
Also, the front man may have fucked over his bandmates, or maybe not, depends really. I'm inclined to say his behavior may have been shitty, but that's something you should work out beforehand.
As a metal head, I didn't understand Ghost for the longest time. I didn't hate it, but "this isn't metal" was my exact thought, lol. Took me a few tries before I finally thought they were "okay". Then I went to see them live, and now they're probably in my top 15 bands.
A lot of fellow metal heads out there don't like it when music is fun enough to be enjoyed by people who don't keep a closet full of long-sleeved band shirts. A couple years ago I ran into an old coworker at a Fleshgod Apocalypse show and they got angry when I asked if they were interested in tagging along to an upcoming Dethklok show.
I love that it sounds like dark 80s pop. I have a friend that I told square hammer was about Freemasonry because he's a mason. Took like 2 years of listening to it before he really caught the lyrics.
I'm sure "most hated" has already been covered, so I'll go farther down the list and pick one that's a little hated and IMHO more than "not bad": Crash Test Dummies.
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm gets clowned on by people who remember it, but (1) it's pretty good, and (2) CTD's first three albums are full of super catchy folk-pop-rock with decent lyrics. Some of the third album, and then subsequent stuff gets deeper and deeper into Brad Roberts' then-current interests and generally doesn't grab me, but more power to him.
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm itself was undoubtedly picked to be sonically polarizing and grab more attention than some of the slightly less "Crash Test Dummyish" tracks.
Honestly, I like CTD, but with just a few more songs, Superman's Song, The Ghosts that Haunt Me, and Afternoons & Coffeespoons, you should probably have enough for a lifetime, LOL. Superman's Song may even be vaguely familiar if you were reading comics in those days, as it came out not too long before the (in)famous Death of Superman arc.
Hanson. Their curse was that Mmmbop became THE hit early in their career. Their later stuff is in fact alright and with a lot more skill involved than a single repeated hook.
I mean people like Chris Brown and Kanye both make themselves hated for things outside their music. Then there are people like Prince who would act like they were all high and mighty and have his staff tell everyone to not look him in the eye or even look at him. Was his music good, sure... But if someone told me not to look at him I'd mark it as a red flag and not buy his shit.
The "Don't look them in the eye" rule is as misunderstood as Van Halen's removal of brown M&Ms.
When famous people have to navigate through hallways, etc., they have to pass others, and many people try to get their attention, so they can say Hi, tell them how much they love the artist, etc. Perhaps they just want to catch their attention and smile.
That artist is a person, like anyone else. They have a lot on their mind, and they are probably trying to get somewhere, to do something, and they are concentrating on that. They don't want to have to stop for every person, smile, say Hi, hear about how important they are, yadda yadda. They just want to get on with their thing.
Think about how you would feel if you had something important on your mind, with other people counting on you, and waiting for you, and you have to stop and act polite with every random stranger who wants to interact with you, so they can go home and tell everybody. Is it any wonder why celebrities are late to everything?
So they tell their staff to keep people from bothering them, and the easiest way to do that is to simply prohibit anyone from trying to look them in the eye. Obviously, if the VIP approaches you, asks you questions, looks you in the eye, that rule is off.
The M&M thing was because VanHalen had the biggest stage rig ever at the time, and they needed specific electric, lighting, etc. qualifications. They would arrive, and find venues inadequate because the venue didn't bother to read the contract. So they started adding the M&M thing so they knew as soon as they walked in the door if the venue had read the contract. If there were brown M&Ms, then it meant that the venue either hadn't read the contract, or had decided to ignore whatever clauses they felt like. Either way was a broken contract problem.
Dudes staff would message everyone who would would be in his vacinity at award shows to tell them not to look him in the eye. He's not performing, he's sitting in the stands. Sounds more like he was on the spectrum and couldn't cope with people well.
Taylor Swift, the modern version. She used to be a genuinely talented singer songwriter but has gone way too far into the popstar life. I remember her playing solo songs on an acoustic guitar, and she was good.
At least in the thrash scene, Anthrax gets shit on a lot for being part of the Big 4, however I fucking love them, even though they had a period where every release was dogshit. Their early stuff is peak thrash, which is good because nowadays they mainly stick to playing their early stuff. Still deserving of their position. Though sometimes I wonder if it should be a Big 5, including Exodus, who were one of the first.
Anthrax has some really great stuff. But as you said, you have too tread carefully through their catalog. When they are good, they are amazing... When they are bad, they are really bad.
Top comment on the vid hits the nail on the head.:
"Big 4 summary
Slayer: Fastest and Heaviest
Megadeth: Most technical
Metallica: Largest impact
Anthrax: Thrash that makes you want to grab a beer and have a party."
Years ago I went to the Slayer farewell tour. There were a lot of bands that I had wanted to see for a long time: Testament, Behemoth, Lamb of God, and Anthrax.
In my opinion, Anthrax stole the show. I hadn't listened to them much before that show, but on my way back home I played a lot from their catalog and realized I had been missing out.
Probably my all time favourite band. Apart from the era where Fat Mike decided to dedicate entire albums to explain how hilarious it was to him that he is a kinky fuck who wear dresses and drink pee, while also having teenage children. One song would've sufficed. We got it.
People really really hate him. I remember when I was a kid, e,g pre 2020s, everyone seemed to love him. Now he's like a kind of Hitler. Interesting how people literally only tune into the mainstream stuff, i.e refused to accept he was dodgy until the evidence became overwhelming around this year
Eh, everyone does that to some degree. Not enough time in the day to keep up with everything. I've gone years without knowing an artist I liked did something bad. Even longer if it's an artist I don't like!
Smash Mouth wound up getting overplayed with "All Star", but their debut Fush Yu Mang is excellent. Way better than you'd expect, and it's worth a listen if just for their first radio hit, "Walkin On The Sun".

Totally agree.
Top comment on the vid hits the nail on the head.: "Big 4 summary Slayer: Fastest and Heaviest Megadeth: Most technical Metallica: Largest impact Anthrax: Thrash that makes you want to grab a beer and have a party."

NOFX gets a lot of flack, I love their music.

Probably my all time favourite band. Apart from the era where Fat Mike decided to dedicate entire albums to explain how hilarious it was to him that he is a kinky fuck who wear dresses and drink pee, while also having teenage children. One song would've sufficed. We got it.

Curious, what kind of flack do they get? I always thought they were well regarded

Maybe Michael Jackson for being pedo.
Jhex@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 9h
I think it's clear now that, at least in America, everybody pretends to hate pedophiles when in reality they could not give less of a fuck

Calling Michael Jackson "not that bad" is a bit of an understatement, though.

Lana Del Rey?
I think her music is OK but she got a lot of hate for pretending she was raised poor when in reality she is a trust fund nepo baby (I think?)

Smash Mouth wound up getting overplayed with "All Star", but their debut Fush Yu Mang is excellent. Way better than you'd expect, and it's worth a listen if just for their first radio hit, "Walkin On The Sun".
