I remember our maths teacher once brought to school a mechanical calculator to impress us, and we were all like "uhh, sir? what is this even"

I can't remember his reaction to our lack of enthusiasm at the time, but I often think about that marvel of engineering and what he tried to share with us

binarytobis@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 2d (2 replies)

One of my teachers brought in a slide rule but didn’t teach us how it actually worked, just talked about its history for a while. It got to me because I actually was excited, and I wanted to see it in action.

hamFoilHat@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 2d

If anyone is wondering, slide rules use logarithms to turn addition into multiplication and subtraction into division. So think about how you would do addition with two rulers, if you were adding 2+3 you would line up the rulers so that the 0 on one was at the 2 on the other. Then you would see that the 3 on that one would be lined up with the 5 in the first ruler. If you follow that procedure in a slide rule then you will have done multiplication instead.

I'm just old enough that one of my high school teachers had a giant slide rule mounted at the top of the chalkboard. He was as quick with that as we were with our calculators.

He did show us how to use it, but we never practiced.

Dunno how I'd have reacted during my teenage years, but today I'd sit down and listen with full attention if he explained the inner workings of a mechanical calculator... Which I might have to watch a video of now. Fuck you for instigating my curiosity!

tetris11@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 1d

Looking online it looks like it might have been a Curta mechanic calculator, because I remember he said it could add, multiply, and subtract, but not divide

It really is sad I had to grow up having only the boring 7353 available as a meaningful calculator prank... :-(

Halt die Klappe Alter sonst du bekommst mein knuckle sandwich!

(I forget what "knuckle" is in German. I want to say "knochen" but know it's not true)

Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de · 10 pts · 2d (3 replies)

I think the correct German expression would be "sonst werde ich dir die Fresse polieren", which I again have no idea on how to translate to English (what's the English word for "Fresse"?? - Important stuff you don't learn in language class...).

I like "knuckle sandwich", though! :-) The word for "knuckle" would be "Knöchel", but that usually is not used when talking about fighting.

But we interestingly also have a backery-themed expression for hitting someone: "ich semmel dir eine" (Semmel being the Southern German name for a kind of backed breakfast roll, and for some reason used as a verb here...)

tetris11@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Fresse polieren

had to look that up: 'polish your mouth'
which is pretty colorful hahaha

I'll update my threat to a bread-based one, since bread is life

"Ich fuetter dir ein Knoechel Broetchen!" (yep, common expression, yep....)

yetAnotherUser@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 2d

That's quite the... "friendly" translation. I'd translate it as "polish your fucking mouth" instead.

You will likely get your mouth polished if you call someone's mouth a "Fresse".

GandalftheBlack@feddit.org · 3 pts · 2d

I think gob is a decent translation for Fresse

And 707 + 707 = 1414

Akasazh@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d

That one used to be Dutch only, as 'lol' meant 'funny' long before the internet.

But had since become useable worldwide, in the anglosphere at least

Apparently "4" is a stand-in for "h", but it's hard to tell with a lot of fonts.

That beins said, I don't get why the name of an oil company is supposed to be funny

village604@adultswim.fan · 0 pts · 2d (5 replies)

Shouldn't there just be one 5 at the end?

P1k1e@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d (4 replies)

Nah, I mean I wrote the number backwards for the ease of reading but if you must see the math

6922251x8= 55378008

Edit: fat fingers

village604@adultswim.fan · 1 pts · 2d (3 replies)

But mirrored that would spell "boobiess" with an extra S at the end.

SLVRDRGN@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Where'd you get an E from? And why is it before the 1?

ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1d

E is just the exponential marker (80081 x 10^5), placing it before the 1 is a typo

Real life calculators are, what, 50 years old? They're just as much a relic of our time as the abacus was once.

mriormro@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1d

You probably live inside of and use buildings that are just as old or older.

Magnum@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 1d (2 replies)

What are you talking about, I have two calculators...

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

I only have one abacus. Not even sure if it's the latest version, as I haven't been keeping up with abacus advancements lately.

Randelung@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

my point is, things pass. they fade out over time. i used to program TI Voyage 200 in class, too, but it's naive to think the separate calculator will stick around forever.

They've found an actual calculator. They're just calling it a "live action app", similar to saying "3d printed save icon" for a floppy disc.

Uhh… teaching your kids is mainly your own responsibility…

Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works · 61 pts · 2d (5 replies)

There were things you learned at school, but not from teachers. Like how Marilyn Manson removed a rib to suck his own penis, or that Mew was hiding under the truck, that you could unlock Sonic in Super Smash Bros., or how a random string of numbers turned to "Boobies" if you flip a calculator upside-down. Parents don't normally teach you that stuff.

plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works · -15 pts · 2d (4 replies)

No, but it’s their responsibility to fill any gaps in what they’re not taught, can’t grasp or struggle with.

Too many people think schools teach you everything. No it’s what they WANT to teach, there’s a lot missing that the parents need to know from reading the kids curriculum.

Large portion of parents are lazy and/or assume the schools teach everything. They never have and here will, it’s always curated, the parents fill the gaps.

Vincent@feddit.nl · 27 pts · 2d

Those damn lazy parents not teaching their children how to spell boobies on calculators are ruining our society!

Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de · 20 pts · 2d

DisasterTransport@startrek.website · 15 pts · 2d

you are having an entirely different conversation than the one you are in. The point of all these little things is that kids teach them to other kids. I assume theres still kid-lore, its just about... idk, how to unlock the Freddy fazbear skin in fortnite or whatever

Yeah I'm not showing my boy Blue Waffle. I would be surprised if he isn't aware, but I'm not sitting him down and teaching it.
