Yo dawg, we heard you like suitcases! So I put on a suitcase on your ride so that when you put your suitcase on the plane it’s actually considered an e-scooter not a suitcase and you get banned from plane, so then you can ride your suitcase more!

Now open up that suitcase, it’s actually a speaker!

rmuk@feddit.uk · 56 pts · 2d (1 reply)

From the product description:

Too big to be included in your free allowance and self-defeating as a checked bag, this mandatory carry-on item includes an unfamiliar-looking battery (which is either too small to be useful or too big to be safe) that will cause both in-flight staff that are sick of life and TSA agents looking for an excuse, any excuse, alike to giggle with glee. The space demanded by the retractable handles and motor ensure that not only will you need to be selective with your packing but also with your gym workout in preparation for lugging this thing into an overhead bin. In the departures lounge it comes into it's own: instead of having to walk for arduous minutes at a time from security to the gate - often along treacherous perfectly flat carpeted concrete floors, and with mere hours to spare - you can now inexpertly weave your top-heavy assemblage through the delighted thorngs of your fellow travellers who will surely be as obliging as can be of enduring the occasional shin injury or will graciously bow out of your way as soon as their self-preservation instincts sense your approach.

Must be kept bone dry at all times. The homeopathic torque output of the motor makes the product utterly useless on asphalt, gravel, uneven paving slabs, grass and even the gentlest inclines, meaning it becomes an unrelenting burden the moment it leaves the terminal.

...probably

Janx@piefed.social · 4 pts · 2d

Did you just come up with that!? It's perfect. (Aside from the "thorngs" typo.) Do you write for a living?

papalonian@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 3d (11 replies)

FWIW I've never had my carry-on weighed

proudblond@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d (7 replies)

They do in Europe. It’s annoying. I had to rearrange stuff amongst four carry-ons while standing in front of the check-in counter because one of them was too heavy. It would have all evened out and they knew that because they weighed all of them, but they still made me do it.

Jason@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I live in the UK and regularly travel to and from the rest of Europe. Never had my carry on luggage weighed. Not on the way out or the returning journey.

I check in online and rarely travel with hold luggage, usually only a big rucksack to carry on, so maybe that is part of the reason. Though one would think that would make them want to check the weight of my bag more??

I dont even know where they would weigh my carry on luggage as I don't use the check in desks. Unless they discretly do it while at the security scanners?? That would be news to me.

Maybe I've just been lucky.

proudblond@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Maybe they only check the rollers? I don’t think they checked my backpack (personal item) either.

arrow74@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I've only flown maybe 6 times from Europe, 2 domestic/Schengen and the rest international. I'm only counting the times I started at an airport within Europe.

So far never had my carry on weighed. France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, and Portugal.

Not saying it doesn't happen just curious how common it is

proudblond@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Maybe it’s recent? My understanding is that it has to do with overall weight and fuel costs, but I could be totally wrong. I went to Spain in 2023 and I’m pretty sure they weighed them then, but not 100% positive. This summer was to Scandinavia and they did both ways.

Taldan@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Considering how many aviation disasters are a result of incorrectly weighing passengers and luggage, in addition to incorrect weight distribution, I can understand the caution

proudblond@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

Okay that’s fair, I hadn’t really considered distribution on a plane. Still a bit silly when my carry-on was going to end up right next to my kid’s much lighter carry-on in the overhead bin, but whatever! I also know that policy is easy to lean on when consistently enforced. I did it in any case, even if I grumbled about it. (I was still nice to the agents though!)

skeezix@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d (1 reply)

The thing in the image is too big to be a carry on

papalonian@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d

At the risk of sounding like an ad, the "Elala Pro Rideable Carry-On" is 21.3 x 9.1 x 20.5 inches

Edit: the one in the larger top image is the "Master" model at 24.5 x 11.1 x 23.3 inches

It's technically a little wide but the carryon I use is technically wider than allowed and they don't care unless you're in the last boarding groups of a full flight

psud@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2d

America doesn't seem to care, but the rest of the world often limits you to 8 to 10kg

SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3d

YSK: If you have mobility problems, you can call ahead or just ask for assistance and the airline will provide a wheelchair and an escort to/ from the gate.

Edit: this is a free service AFAIK, but handing your escort a five or ten bucks is polite.

Great for jousting on those moving walkways (not absolutely necessary but more speed, more fun) if you find another traveler with one and come up with something to use as a lance. Really helps pass the time on a long layover.

Based off the product pictures that were on the actual listing, I think it's more aimed at older people with mobility issues.

Aneb@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

The airport offers a free service to court the elderly around the terminals and brings them to there gate. I dropped my gran off with no hassle 2 yrs ago. She had a lovely experience, tip is suggested but x50 times cheaper than the e suitcase.

zikzak025@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

A lot of old people hate being helped, in my experience. I could see this product appealing to someone who hates the idea of being carted around by someone else, even if they genuinely need it.
