That might be the same person, just at work vs at home.

The Linux to Transfem pipeline is real!

Ziglin@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 1y

Hmmm that can't be right, did I use the wrong terminal? Why can I only sometimes be a girl?

Apparently the pipe goes both ways. I started by coming out as trans when I was 18 and now I use Linux

evidences@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1y

It must feel so good to get home, take of your slacks, and let your programming socks out after a long day in the computer mines.

Lvdwsn@lemmy.world · 49 pts · 1y (3 replies)

My company just went under and let us keep our laptops, day after they wiped it I got Ubuntu on it. So I'm a little bit of column A, little bit of column B!

PieMePlenty@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Dont have the socks yet huh?

smee@poeng.link · 6 pts · 1y

Programming socks.

Lvdwsn@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

Not yet but they look comfy

hddsx@lemmy.ca · 40 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Ugh. I hope the current owner has new keycaps for all the sock colors because matching socks + keyboard is cool, but well… when you change your socks that goes out the window

thejml@lemm.ee · 43 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Judging by that picture, I think they’re all in on that color scheme and likely just bought multiple pairs of the same socks.

hddsx@lemmy.ca · 19 pts · 1y

That’s baller

Bryllyg@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 24 pts · 1y

Redundant socks is essential for this setup.

boonhet@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 1y

Look, I have a suggestion that will change your life. You can never live another way again.

Go buy 10-20 pairs of socks, all same. When you get a hole in one sock, you only throw away the one sock. You never have to worry about mixing and matching. If you've got two socks, they count as a pair.

I'm not even matching my keycaps to socks, nor wearing anything special, I just found a specific pair of socks I liked and I've bought heaps over the years.

Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 39 pts · 1y (9 replies)

I've worked with a bunch of hardcore Linux users in my career, some of whom even knew about Lemmy. Not one of them have ever worn striped socks though.

Dragonstaff@leminal.space · 37 pts · 1y (3 replies)

The number of trans people is very small. Only a small percentage of people who work in tech are trans. But a relatively huge percentage of trans people work in tech.

I respect cis people's right to wear whatever they want...but if I see striped thigh high socks, I will continue to make assumptions until told otherwise.

JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 1y

I don't work in tech but literally just put stickers and opensuse on a refurbished Thinkpad I bought a few days ago 🫡

Petter1@lemm.ee · 32 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I guess the important thing is Arch 🤭🫠

Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 9 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Gentoo was mentioned more actually.

NeilBru@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 1y (5 replies)

I've reached the acceptance stage of possibly being a pariah in the community for not wanting to wear the socks.

I'm also a cis-gendered heterosexual married male, so I guess that tracks.

janus2@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 1y (4 replies)

ok but have you tried the long socks? they're comfortable. also you can get manly hockey player style ones

NeilBru@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I used to play ice hockey as a preteen/teen, so I've worn 'em in that context.

As far as the fem-boy/"girly" ones, I'm just not into it. Any socks above mid-achilles tendon make me itch. I have hairy legs.

janus2@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

what about striped ankle socks 😂

NeilBru@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Well! My wife is Dutch and she bought me a pair of Dutch HappySocksâ„¢ with stripes a few birthdays ago.

I suppose I'm not that much of a pariah after all!

janus2@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 1y

those are awesome and they definitely count as programming socks 11/10

Same for old Dell, the $2000 laptop can be grabbed at $300 after 3 years, this is really cool. I installed Linux on mine too of course.

Now I just gotta replace my battery so it can be a laptop again!

rcbrk@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The replacement battery you bought in 2017 was the last of the genuine stock for that 2012 Thinkpad model. Now it's only poor quality aftermarket. Maybe just stick with the existing genuine battery -- its 47 second runtime should be enough time for AC loss to trigger a custom script to make it hibernate.

Nalivai@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

You can get lucky, some of the aftermarket stuff works

A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

I'm cis and not into anime tho

I hate it when my gender takes ages to compile, but I'm running a slow CPU

boonhet@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 1y

Unfortunately the solution is to use a binary package for your gender, which puts you in one of a few common configurations, rather than letting you customize.

It is similar to this meme too.

Luffy879@lemmy.ml · 9 pts · 1y

What do computers have to do with it anyway?

Gemini24601@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I’ve wondered that myself, but I’ve come to the conclusion that transgender individuals seem to value their privacy more than the average person. This is all due to increased cyber bullying to them online. Linux is well known for being free from data collection (except Ubuntu) and corporate greed, so it would make sense if this was an operating system of choice.
