Life's too short to learn german. -- Mark Twain
Das Leben ist zu kurz um Deutsch zu lernen. -- Oscar Wilde

lugal@sopuli.xyz · 15 pts · 1y (6 replies)

Wait, Oscar Wilde spoke German?

Novocirab@feddit.org · 26 pts · 1y (4 replies)

From their early childhood the Wilde boys had a French nanny and a German governess, so that they grew up speaking German as well as French.

neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 20 pts · 1y (2 replies)

You can't always figure it out, but German is so similar to English you can sometimes get the gist of it.

tetris11@feddit.uk · 17 pts · 1y

Exactly, for example, "ich bin laden" pretty transparently translates roughly to "I am loaded with accusations of lying underground with an air pipe and a fan"

OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de · 6 pts · 1y

I should learn it. I spent a few hours there on my way to Afghanistan. Beautiful country.

Thats why I blocked the whole community.

Landless2029@lemmy.world · 50 pts · 1y (9 replies)

If I did that I'd have missed this gem.

No idea what it says but Lego meme!

Ephera@lemmy.ml · 54 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The meme is a reference to a popular German YouTube channel, called "Held der Steine" (basically translates as "Hero of Bricks").

On the channel, a guy shows off building block sets which you can then also buy in his accompanying shop. Up until a few years ago, it was almost exclusively Lego sets. Then Lego sent him a mail that his channel logo, which contained a Lego-like brick shape, violated the Lego trademark.
At a later point, they also demanded videos of him to be taken down where he had colloquially referred to building block sets from other manufacturers as "lego", as we often do in German.

And yeah, this did not go down well, so now the guy mostly shows off building block sets from other manufacturers and frequently highlights how insanely expensive Lego is in comparison.

Flipper@feddit.org · 21 pts · 1y

Don't forget he also highlights the bad quality in comparison to the price.

RedSnt@feddit.dk · 7 pts · 1y (6 replies)

It's not like translation is hard these days, but I will say it's rare I do it for ich_iel myself as well. In this case the meme says:

  1. I'm suing you!
  2. World, greetings. I'm the hero of the stones, in Frankfurt am Main (a city), in the heart of Europe, in my wonderful little shop, on a fantastic day, and look what I've brought you.
Landless2029@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (5 replies)

But the lazy in me doesn't want to type it out on another site. Especially on mobile where I can't pull it up side by side.

RedSnt@feddit.dk · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

And then there's the ß and ü ö ä and so on. Glad I have most of the keys on my keyboard, but on a mobile device? That does sound like too much effort indeed.

Enkrod@feddit.org · 5 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Unexpected Keyboard is best!

RedSnt@feddit.dk · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I should look into that. Is it on f-droid or play store? The way I'd write German letters on my android now is just swiping to the side to switch keyboard layout from Danish or English to German as I have that set up, but that keyboard does look interesting.
EDIT: Ok, found it both places. And it's very cool. I should've been using that for ages instead of the default Samsung keyboard, it's so much easier to get special characters. Only gripe is the movement key being right next to send, a risky position.

squaresinger@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Most android keyboards just allow you to long-press on characters to type similar characters. So for example, on my Samsung keyboard, if I hold "O" for a second I get a popup with 15 o-like characters. You can do that with all characters that have similar characters. "ß" is under "s", "ä" under "a", and so on.

Xerxos@lemmy.ml · -1 pts · 1y

You can just use Google Lens? No typing involved.

Not_mikey@slrpnk.net · 7 pts · 1y (5 replies)

On android you can hold the bottom gesture area and it brings up Google ai "what's on my screen" mode and it has a translate function that will replace all the German text on the screen with English, seems to work pretty well at least on the German memes.

OpticalMoose@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 1y

I'm a dinosaur, still browsing on a desktop PC. But I'm going to see if there's a similar plugin I can use. Thanks for the tip.

Landless2029@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Nice... Seems to work. Thanks!

cows_are_underrated@feddit.org · 12 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Anecdote: This isn't guaranteed to work, since in ich_iel we somet8mes use "Zangendeutsch" which means, that we forcefully translate words, or parts of word, that are somewhat normalised, but are not native German words, back into German in the dumbest most confusing way possible.

Dunstabzugshaubitze@feddit.org · 10 pts · 1y

no, we translate as accurate as possible, word by word!

SpatchyIsOnline@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Sure, while simultaneously sending everything on your screen to Google for them to build up a profile of all the content you're looking at, even when it's not on their platform...

Anyone got good German learning resources? I took courses on it a decade ago and would love to get back into it. Tried Duolingo a while ago but I find it sucks with actual mechanics and just sprays and prays sayings.

Allemaniac@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

Babbel is pretty good, it's a german company and they offer a lot of free courses aswell. Good luck on your journey! Just skip the articles, we native germans sometimes have trouble remembering the correct form lol

Zacryon@feddit.org · 5 pts · 1y (7 replies)

Translators are a thing, you know?

mostNONheinous@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y (6 replies)

On iOS you can select the text in the meme itself and get a translation in seconds. Not sure about android cause I just don’t use it, don’t hate me.

lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 1y

It's the same on Android

Zacryon@feddit.org · 0 pts · 1y (4 replies)

Besides character recognition in images, most people are also able to type.

mostNONheinous@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

This was a conversation about convenience, not typing in a language that you aren’t native too.

Zacryon@feddit.org · 1 pts · 1y (2 replies)

As long as the language of the respective post shares the same or a similar alphabet as those you know, that's not very difficult to do. Especially German-English isn't hard to type. The worst thing might be Umlaute (ä, ö, ü) or the "sharp s" (ß). But that's about the all of the difficulty there is.

Less convenient, sure. But not very much more effort either.

Boakes@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It still requires some effort. If I was in the mood to invest effort into something I wouldn’t be doom scrolling on Lemmy.

Zacryon@feddit.org · 2 pts · 1y

Fair enough. If lazy scrolling > desire to know the translation, I'm doing the same.

SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y
