What community would you like to see more active on Lemmy?

I suspect most people aren't subbing/following communities on Lemmy. So post the community or topic you want to see pop off. And reader(that's you) if you are interested in that community click the link and follow it.

👏Let's 👏 start 👏 coordinating 👏 people.

Not one community specifically, but I really wish that communities about sports - specifically American football - were more active. I really miss that from the other place.

IWW4@lemmy.zip · 23 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I am doing my best to get activity going on the nfl and lacrosse instances.

Nusm@piefed.zip · 9 pts · 1y

I’ll try to start contributing to the NFL community.

GiuseppeAndTheYeti@midwest.social · 3 pts · 1y

Keep it up. I don't much care about off-season news or anything, but I'll probably join the discussion when it comes to highlights and game threads. These upcoming seasons for each sport will play a big part in how active the community will be going forward I think. Unfortunately a bunch of traffic was dominated by the presidential election last year so other niche topics should gain more traction this year.

scytale@piefed.zip · 16 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The NBA community (!nba@lemmy.world) is small but decently active. We had live game threads for the playoffs but it was like 5 people commenting lol. It was still fun though, and hopefully it grows more.

phonics@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 1y

That's how we get it started. 5 people active on live game thread leads people to see 'oh, when it's live there is a group hanging out here' next time you'll have 7 then 12 then 30. Keep it up!

lectricleopard@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

That's the one sub I'll still peek in now and then. Especially since my guys won it this year. Lol.

reactionality@lemmy.sdf.org · -10 pts · 1y (5 replies)

American exceptionalism strikes once again.

theherk@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (4 replies)

How? Because somebody likes something? That isn’t American exceptionalism.

reactionality@lemmy.sdf.org · -2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I highlighted it because obviously you're extremely stupid:

theherk@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

How does liking gridiron football equate to believing the US is exemplary or better than other nations? Or maybe you think the definition of American exceptionalism is, “Likes something American”. Calling people dumb because you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about isn’t a good look.

reactionality@lemmy.sdf.org · 0 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Saying you want sports communities then hyper-focusing on American sports is exceptionalism.

There is a small percentage of the Lemmy population that is American, the great majority is European.

No one here cares for American football or the NFL. So why create a community? Because they think we care. Simple as. It's believing that Americans are at the centre of the universe once again 🙄.

theherk@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

I assume you aren't engaging in good faith dialog here, given the immediate reach for disparaging remarks, but on the off chance you are, let me ask you this. If you asked somebody what their favorite whisky was, and they replied "Laphroaig", would that be a sign of Scottish nationalism or exceptionalism? Or if you asked their favorite cheese, and they gave "Gouda", a sign of Dutch exceptionalism?

Just because one's answer to "What community would you like to see more active..." is something that is from the US, this is not American Exceptionalism. The question wasn't, "What community do you think every Lemmy user should be required to participate in?" Nor was is, "What community is the best and most important on Lemmy?"

Clearly, at least one person here cares about it. Clearly that person isn't you. Everything you have written here is incorrect, and if you had any shame, you'd be embarrassed to have said it in public.

!lightnovels@ani.social

I think we need to get away from the short format brain rot media that is so popular today, like TikTok and Twitter/X. And light novels are familiar and approachable. Often, people have already seen the anime or seen the manga.

For that matter, even !manga@ani.social could use more activity, and manga is even more approachable than light novels.

I recently started reading a lot of the LNs that are on "catch up" at a website called j-novel club, and it's gotten me to enjoy reading novels more.

Also, the Ascendance of a Bookworm light novel is one of my favorite things I've ever read. It's a pretty long one at 33 volumes, though.

Landless2029@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1y (4 replies)

!lightnovels@ani.social

I went there hoping to discuss korean web novels and they don't allow it.

No idea why

NineSwords@ani.social · 2 pts · 1y (3 replies)

No idea why

Because they are by definition different things. Close in style, sure, but so are YA novels.

Coming as a reddit refugee I just replicated their definition when creating the community. And I still feel the same way since it's not a general "novel" community. If there's a popular demand I'll loose the restrictions.

Landless2029@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Thanks for the response.

Considering that Lemmy is still growing I'd hope there would be a place to discuss all light novels in one place.

About a year ago maybe I made a post and it was taken down due to not being a japanese web novel.

Regardless of style "web novel" and "light novel" aren't specific to a source country like manga and manwha are. So as a community restricting !lightnovels@ani.social to just japanese ones didn't make sense. You could've done jnovels instead.

You're doing it based off of writing style. You can make that call as a moderator but I just let it go and don't discuss my reading with anyone still after leaving reddit.

One day maybe enough people break the rule in a month to open it up.

NineSwords@ani.social · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Regardless of style “web novel” and “light novel” aren’t specific to a source country like manga and manwha are.

Both Wikipedia and Wiktionary define them as Japanese. The same goes for the original Reddit community or the database the bot (Myne) gets her info from. I did not take down your comment (it's still up) but pointed out that it's the wrong community for that reason. I didn't do it on a whim.

I'm not categorically against Korean (or Chinese) novels, but they're by every definition I know simply not "light novels". I believe that a general book community would be a better place to discuss other translated works. For reference, the place on Reddit to post Korean Webnovels would be r/noveltranslations instead of r/lightnovels.

Landless2029@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Thank you for the clarification. I've always just searched TITLE light novel and it just comes right up when looking for the source of a graphic novel.
If I had the bandwidth I would start up novel translations myself, but alas my life is too busy to moderate and maintain it.
Thank you for your own efforts as a moderator and taking the time to clarify.

Edit:
I'm not good at using Lemmy search, but I figured out how to find my post here: Link
I found a discord server that was dedicated to the series I was talking about, but left it since I don't like my discord cluttered.
I read like 20 different stories across Korean and Japanese authors. The bulk keeps me distracted enough to not have spare time to chat. Although I miss having people to converse with.

NineSwords@ani.social · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I think we need to get away from the short format brain rot media that is so popular today, like TikTok and Twitter/X.

As Myne in the sidebar states: "Y'all better start reading more books!" :)

logicbomb@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

And she is noticeably not snobby about books. Myne would love to read light novels.

One problem that got me away from novels for a while was that I'd get ambitious and try to read something that was recommended but really wasn't for me.

NineSwords@ani.social · 2 pts · 1y

One problem that got me away from novels for a while was that I’d get ambitious and try to read something that was recommended but really wasn’t for me.

I would recommend to go with series that you liked the anime of and want to know how the story continues. It's not a 100% surefire way to find something you like, but at least you remove other people's taste from the equation.

Liberal gun owners. (Don't know how to link properly.)

https://old.lemmy.world/c/liberalgunowners

Such a great reddit community, or used to be. No toxic right-wing shit, just people showing off their builds and buys, asking questions, getting solid advice with no bullshit, talking laws and legal repercussions, linking timely news, loads of trans people posting. No judging! A new person could come in with the same damned question we'd covered 500 times. No problem! We'd all jump in and help.

Fuck I miss that place. It's dead here. Also, I think there are a few people that go in there solely to downvote. Don't know how to check logs, not interested enough to try, but it looks like assholes are trying to spoil it.

And FFS, NOW is the time left-minded Americans should be getting armed! Blacks, LGBTs and women have been the largest gun buying demographic for several years. They need help and they need a judgement free space to get it.

I kinda wish we’d merge them… which I know goes against the grain of how the fediverse is supposed to operate.

Not necessarily:

One of the advantages of a decentralized platform like Lemmy is the ability to create parallel communities on the same topic. “You don’t like how a community is being moderated? Go to another instance and start your own community!” (with or without blackjack and hookers)

However, this is a double-edged sword. The creation of multiple communities on the same (or similar) topics can also fragment the userbase, leading to very sparsely populated communities.

I think it only makes sense to have multiple communities on the same topic if each version serves a specific niche or has a unique moderation style. I think most of the examples you've given would be suitable for consolidation into two or three communities.

More info on consolidating communities in the pinned thread on !fedigrow@lemmy.zip.

You'll probably see it there, but there are only a few people who will persistently try to grow a community, week after week.

Reading the comments here, it seems like a lot of people would like their niche community to be active, but we have to acknowledge that with our current userbase, more general communities are already struggling to stay active, so niche ones are even harder.

Example: !movies@piefed.social is kept up active by less than 5 active posters, and that's a generic community about movies.

!cooking@lemmy.world is probably good enough for all types of cooking, you get the idea.

Yeah it's pretty wild. But if we ask people to join niche stuff. Odds are they're gonna half as it (at least) and just sub to the bigger ones which... I'm taking as a win.

if you want to make posts that regularly get over 50 and sometimes over 100 upvotes, start posting to !truecomics@midwest.social. Look here to find new comics to post: https://lemmy.world/post/17836648/12653544

Guitars. Reddit has numerous active, friendly, supportive guitar forums. Lemmy doesn't have a single one.

phonics@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y (3 replies)

Guitars@lemmy.world is good. I just asked about fretboard oil yesterday and got like 30 comments.

That's a pretty good one, but your post was three days ago, and there's only been one new post since. That's pretty quiet compared to Reddit, with hundreds of posts a day, over multiple forums.

phonics@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

We gotta start somewhere

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

whatis this thing communities, certain online games still has a community on reddit but not lemmy(not the generalized game discussion).

location specific communities, but that doesnt seem to be large here lemmy, and ones that arnt overtaken by conservatives, gatekeeper and astroturfers.

phonics@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

I suspect there are a decent amount of people from major cities on here. If you start one of these asklemmy threads saying 'hey any people from tokyo here' and then in the text field just out a tokyo specific community address in there and say let's congregate here. You'll prolly get 20 people. This community has 11k MAU which is large enough to get a lil something going I'd think.

emb@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y (2 replies)

I'm a fan of these kinds of games, especially Smash Melee. Since leaving Reddit and Twitter, I feel pretty disconnected from them.

I'm trying to learn Japanese as a hobby, and it's slightly unfortunate that there's not much of a community for it here. I think the first two kinda split the userbase by having slightly different focus, preventing a definitive one spot. The third one is decently active though, mostly thanks to just a handful of people. The effort makes a big difference.

emb@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1y

And I wanted to add, in general, I think communities here often work better at higher levels. Like in the examples from my post, smashbros is better than just the ssbm community. fgc, more realistic than communities for individual fighting games. Languagelearning > individual language communities, to an extent.

Since the Lemmy user base is small, I think zooming out is helpful. This place isn't Reddit and it doesn't work to try and replicate it 1-to1.

I really think so.

I miss the From Software fanbase on reddit. there's a few here but they're spread thin and horribly inactive

SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

I used to be a big fan of videogame subs, it doesn't seem like there are many communities here focused on specific games.

Minecraft and rimworld had some great community content.

The dropout community would be nice to circle jerk with. But I really miss my knock off cheap Chinese fake watch sub. I tried to post to it here but my post got deleted and the sublemmy shut down soon after.

phonics@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

The new Jakob ep of gamechanger was a good time. That being said, I also don't appreciate how they pushed a player(jess?) to tears(happy tears) in her emotional episode in a way earlier season. Weird lil grey zone I haven't seen explored elsewhere.

I'm very conflicted. But I keep watching.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 1y

You wanna feel conflicted? Watch the Greg O'Brien and Aly Beardsley show about paying off their student loans. That was legit reality TV.

I also would like to see less bots reposting reddit. Like the Formula 1 and PC Master Race ones are just reddit posts.
