Logically it doesn't make any sense, they nominate people that aren't popular that can't win, or if they do win like Joe Biden they're going to do nothing with it and hand it right back.

Well I mean what do you expect? it's a fascist country, that's what facists do.
you think Nazi Germany allowed anti-party rhetoric or even anything that they could consider remotely offensive to them? no. they got rid of those people.
Americans, please don't allow yourselves to become more Nazi than you already are.
Ulrich@feddit.org · 14 pts · 349d
What are we supposed to do? I always imagined in Nazi Germany that the govt was working against the wishes of the people and they just didn't fight back but Americans seem to constantly celebrate being stepped on and now I'm thinking maybe the Germans did too. I just never could have imagined humanity was capable of ignorance of this scale.
Geth@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 10 pts · 348d
Germans did in fact like being stepped on just the same and when the war was over one of the biggest immediate issues of the allies was the de-nazification of the remaining population. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denazification
Leaders like these tend to be a symptom of a deeper systemic issue, rather than a pesky bug you could just squash and move on.
Cataphract@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 348d
I think it's just not how people feel and this illusion is one of the ways the Nazi party was so effective. You have bot's, paid-pundits, and controlled social spaces just like the propagandist's and silencing of the dissenters before. Look at any poll, local action, or how people around you actually feel. I live in deep red country and everyone who was so pro-maga before kinda are just silent at this point on the actions of the administration but can still focus in on the "them" like they're told. Only takes a few questions to break it down though with reality.
The breaking up of communities is one of the most effective tactics they have, it should be a focus of progressive factions to double down on keeping open communication between neighbors.
Ulrich@feddit.org · 6 pts · 348d
There are lots and lots of people around me who feel this way. That's what makes it so difficult and so hopeless to fight back. We're not just fighting authorities, we're fighting our families and friends, everyone of of them so dug in that they will hate and insult you if you so much as try to have a conversation about it.
Cataphract@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 348d
I think I understand your situation, a lot of the times I feel the same way. I think it's more realistic to focus on those close to us versus trying to solve the countries problems by ourselves. Everything I read or hear is just a study in what are good arguments to bring up and positions that make sense while reaching across the aisle. I consume conservative media and engage in online debates with conservatives for this very reason. It's all just a preamble to understand and try to reach someone on a topic.
There are definitely times and places where it's not welcomed (like in group settings), but if you continue educating yourself and understanding what fallacy they've indoctrinated within themselves, you can find those good times to engage. For example a recent immigration conversation I had with a relative, didn't go so well. Afterwords I reflected and found a good response asking them, "If masked armed people showed up to your neighbors house and started dragging people out, would you intervene or sit there watching?" It put them into the perspective of actually being there during a raid of someone they knew and benefited from, also allowed them to feel the fear and hopelessness when authoritarians come crashing into your reality. It's not much but it's a start and you just gotta go from there one step at a time.

parody@lemmings.world · 17 pts · 349d
Colbert cancellation was more clever. There are numbers that they could point to (though others that paint him well). They gave him a few months to finish things out. It was temporally too close to the merger talks but besides that the façade could’ve been worse.

Wild watching free speech crash and burn in American. This isn't a company pulling him for his speech, this comes as a direct threat from the government regarding his speech.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr:
“Frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean, we can do this the easy way, or these companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
One's opinion on Kirk's murder is the litmus test. You one of us or one of them? The administration is excelling at not letting a tragedy go to waste. Where were the Democrats when the Minnesota legislators were murdered? Nope. Seems the left is too fair to spin propaganda. And that's why the fascists have won. It's over. They've won.
Get armed, learn and train, defend yourselves even if it means your personal extinction, not an easy path. In any case, hunker down and wait for history to eat them. Gonna take some time, always does, and evil always eats itself in the end.

Colbert is the one well placed, to dust off his satire schtick after a maga conversion on his own channel.
He should quit the network early and start, the colbert reported.
Kimmel idk, but these networks will find conservatives have no sense of humor and cannot drive ratings. If they censor things the right cries about no one will subscribe to their dogshit streaming platforms.
explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 348d
The satire schtick won't get Colbert elected. Kimmel is charismatic and likeable with his own personality. No point in chasing conservative votes; just get liberals excited and showing up.
Hector@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 348d
I'm not saying for Colbert to run for office, I just want him to dust off his satire bit, I think he has way more effective at that than he has been as a establishment Democrat cheerleader.
But since we are on the subject, I do want to see Jon Stewart as the Presidential nominee in 2028, at the head of a host of Reform minded candidates be there Progressive or other flavor of candidate matching their constituencies, that do not think people should be as fucked by the super rich without their consent.
Because that is almost everybody electorally. Red State and blue. And the only way to win here now is with a massive electoral Landslide and even then it might be hard to overcome the Party Machine fixing the elections every way they can.

We need to stop thinking that catching right-wingers in their hypocrisy and exposing it is actually going to achieve something. They know they have a double standard and that they get the clean end of the stick from it. They like that, and want more of it. They know they're doing cancel culture and are anti-freedom of expression. The belief that they might suddenly have a dawning realisation that they've been hypocritical and two-faced and will thereafter either shut up or change their ways is leftist 'pornography plot' daydreaming. We need to accept that they're unashamedly cunts who want non-MAGAs to be second-class citizens in every way possible. So trading blows with them on Twitter and posting gotcha "this you?" screenshots of them saying the opposite shit about George Floyd or whoever is just wasting everyone's time.
Voting is all there is, and that's not a good state of affairs to be in. But it's something you can actually work towards, at least. If you don't intend to vote against them, there's really not much use in complaining when they do their usual reprehensible shit like cost people their livelihoods because they weren't adequately-deferential towards a dead bigot.

You can't win by playing nice is there are no rules for the other side. There is no democracy left in America, and there will be no fair election in 2028 whether Trump is still alive or not.
Anyway, Tyler Robinson showed there is another way. Am I saying Robinson specifically is a good guy? No. But realistically, evil leaders and administrations have been stopped by good guys fighting back with violence, and then stopping when the goal has been achieved and returning to peace. The difference between good and bad isn't non-violence and violence, but restrained violence to achieve the goal of peace and violence as the goal itself.
