Hopefully more hosts follow and point out the major hypocrisy from MAGA. The fact that ABC/Disney flinched from such a small jab really shows how stupid this entire thing is.

I fear one big problem with them flinching so quickly is that it gives the Trump cult plausible deniability to not blame the dictatorship for doing the things that they are doing.
I mean, the government did not censor Kimmel, it was a business decision made by a private entity. Right? RIGHT??
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 331d
It was actually a Trump supporter who owns ABC affiliate stations.
floofloof@lemmy.ca · 27 pts · 333d
That will do nothing. They enjoy their own hypocrisy. They don't care about consistency of principles and are quite happy to just want everything their way while no one else gets anything. They're quite happy to abuse language by saying whatever suits them in the moment. It drives their opponents crazy as they try to point out how inconsistent and irrational they're being. The fascists don't care, but they do love to see you get frustrated. It's just part of their sadistic fun: messing with people, playing with their prey until they are ready to exterminate them.
To complain that fascists are hypocritical or inconsistent is to miss the point of fascism, at least if your hope is to shock them into being more reasonable. I know this quote from Sartre is everywhere but he said it well:
FishFace@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 333d
Pointing out the hypocrisy is not supposed to suddenly convince the actual fascists that they're wrong, it's to convince the people they've duped into following them that they're both wrong and evil.
Triasha@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 333d
I wish I had your faith that there is a large group of followers that don't realize they are doing evil.
WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 333d
Nobody's duped. They don't believe it. They pretend to because doing so hurts you.
FishFace@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 330d
Fascists depend in large part on vast numbers of naive people who take them at their word and don't follow politics closely. Maybe it's hard to imagine, but it really shouldn't be: vast numbers of people only interact with politics through biased sources, or in very small amounts. You should easily be able to work out there are literally millions of people in the US who don't draw any connection between republicans today talking about suppressing disrespectful speech, and democrats talking about similar things for the last several years which those same republicans vehemently criticised.
mitch@piefed.mitch.science · 8 pts · 333d
you know what the worst part about the creeping nature of murderous, paranoid fascism is? the hypocrisy!

I really want someone to chime in with the legal ramifications of ABC being a publicly broadcast station that licenses radio spectrum from the federal government.
Corrupt or not, the feds revoking a license is a lot more plausible than them somehow pulling a private cable station or streaming service out of people's homes.

Eufalconimorph@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 329d
It's tomato soup in a bread bowl with cheese. Delicious. Since the one of the first recorded uses of the word "pizza" is for a round bread flavored with rose water & sugar as the toppings, I think "tomato soup in a bread bowl with cheese" is close enough to qualify.
NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip · -23 pts · 333d
I wouldn't count on it. Stewart has done a LOT of tone policing of the left over the years and just a few days ago (?) criticized people for cheering over the death of a nazi.
Which lines up. Stewart has ALWAYS been a "both sides" kind of guy. His coverage tends to involve facts which means it leans left but there is a reason he had carlson and the like on his show back in the day. So his politics are very much going to disappoint. Just going to be a question of if his hatred of censoring comedians (no matter how shitty) takes precedence.
I think Oliver is more likely to go off on Saturday/Sunday. But you can bet that Business Daddy is talking to him constantly and he does have a whole team he needs to provide for so...
Archangel1313@lemmy.ca · 45 pts · 333d
Lol! Wut? Jon Stewart got Tucker Carlson cancelled back when he was still in his bow tie phase. And the reason he occasionally knocks the left, is because those "facts" he covers, indicate the left needs to occasionally reflect on some shit, too.
Veedem@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 333d
Yeah. He got a lot of shit, upon his return, for criticizing the left’s unwillingness to even engage about conversation about Biden’s age.
Turns out he was right.
NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip · -7 pts · 333d
Which kind of sums up a lot of the pundits "on the left". They are focused on being right, not on being a party (in large part because the Democrats have increasingly been "We are not republicans" for decades now but...).
I don't think there is anyone who wasn't concerned about Biden's age. But we were past the point for a real primary and he was the candidate. So you support his senile ass. Because he is the candidate and we need to win. And when he finally got kicked out and it was Kamala's turn? You support fucking Kamala. There is plenty of time to do after actions after we lose. NOBODY was going to win a presidential campaign in, what was it, like four months? But they sure as hell weren't going to win if they were the third candidate in three weeks. You keep that kind of shit behind closed doors until we know one way or another.
Contrast that with the chuds where they all click their heels and start goose stepping once the primaries are over.
The "shit" isn't about pointing out very real concerns. The "shit" is about doing the republican's jobs for them.
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 331d
Jon Stewart did not get Carlson cancelled. Carlson got fired because he was belligerent to his bosses at Fox.
Archangel1313@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 331d
You never saw the time Stewart went on his show and absolutely skewered his ass, in front of his entire audience? It was brutal. After that he started hemorrhaging viewers. Whatever drama that resulted was the direct result of that take-down, and he got canceled shortly after that. It took years for Carlson to reestablish his reputation.
dellish@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 333d

Quill7513@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 333d
i both agree with you and with him. he also expressed that there's plenty of other people calling this a turn to fascism and he doesn't want to dismiss any of them because he thinks there wrong, but he also doesn't want to give the fascists what they want by feeding hopelessness. like. it's not the path i would take, but i don't see it as a wrong path
bear@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 333d
Same reason people are shy to admit this is now a dictatorship.
ech@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 333d
He flat out chastised those doing so. I don't know if he's finally come around, but that seriously diminished him in my eyes forever more. When his country desperately needed a unified voice to react the infant stages of a fascist government, he chose to rebuke the criticisms and take the side of "wait until it's too late". Now that his buddies are feeling the heat, now he decides it's too much. Fuck that.

spongebue@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 333d
It's not sustainable to just run politicians because their entertainment background makes them electable. Sometimes they need to make difficult decisions. It's gotta stop some time
Maybe I would have supported Stewart running in 2024 against Trump, particularly with hindsight advantage. Fight fire with fire.
Of course I would also vote Stewart over any modern Republican, because those guys can do some damage
But with Trump not running in 2028, I don't see a similar celebrity on the Republican ticket. I'm still dealing with a bad hangover from Kamala Harris 2024, but I would rather see her in office and making those tough decisions than Stewart, because she has the experience doing so.
