"Machine learning" or "heuristics"-driven maybe. But they've got to milk their new garbage marketing terms by releasing the same old stuff under a new name unoe.
It's been bad for me ever since they wanted to "use" more of my data including relating to keyboard (like the fucking don't already) and if you "rejected" then it wouldn't use your history LOL.
Auto-complete keyboard suggestions pretend to no longer even know my name when I sign emails or complete some web forms...
It's been doing it more and more for me on Futo as well as time has gone on, but I keep the app disconnected from the internet (GrapheneOS setting) so it shouldn't be impacted by anything other than training.
It was happening even when I went a while without updating it.
Something makes me think it might be a little self-reinforcing. You get a bad suggestion, you don't instantly correct it (e.g you press space and then go back to correct it), the app originally assumes you wanted the faulty change, doesn't backtrack after since you already pressed space)
Maybe I should just turn down the effect or just disable training entirely and see if that changes anything.
It's intentional, and it's censorship. Someone ought to make a comms app with inbuilt autocorrect that does the opposite and makes all your typos offensive instead.
It's supposed to learn on how you adopt spellings you type. On iOS, it's seemingly impossible to "teach" the OS you actually want to use profanity instead of birds.
really? on Android i almost have the opposite problem. because my keyboard does learn from me, I have come close to using profanity (and straight up vulgarity) in very inappropriate situations.
I decide where my fucks belong, not my app. We can talk about implicit bias here because I just don't trust giant corporations anymore, but the app telling me I didn't mean what I did, whether we want to assert innocence and good will on behalf of the designer, is still censorious. That's my point.
the whole point of having autocorrect is for it to correct your mistakes. but definition you're delegating decision making to your app. with that delegation the app maker would rather not get in trouble for not correcting someone's intended duck and leaving it as a swearword. if you don't want your app to decide where your fucks belong, turn off autocorrect.
or use something other than iOS. if anything my keyboard guesses I'm trying to swear too frequently now.
Look I KNOW the point of it, stated and unstated, laregly it's a mechanic to avoid liability in, well liable; It's sold to us as some convenient buddy to make our lives easier, I'm not new, I'm just cynically rejecting it. It would be just as easy for the makers to include in the contract that your own consequential fuckups are exclusively yours and using the app assumes that condition. I turned it off wherever applicable long ago and never looked back. I am also the type to review my message before hitting send to see if I made mistakes and correct them manually anyway. I think it's better to stay mindful than to get complacent and just let the app pilot your conversations, it really gives that added authenticity to the swearing too ;].
I find autocorrect to be the stupid thing sometimes, I text my wife's name often enough and its not a common name but you'd think that since I type it so often, that autocorrect would assume that I am typing it again but nope, it never guesses correctly. It can never autocorrect my last name either... EVEN WHEN I ADDED IT TO THE DICTIONARY
I already have Shit head fucking fuckface (old boss) but I still get the duck. Voice to text is worse than typing it but both are ducking useless most times.
I switched to the monstrosity in the photo a while back and while it sure took a bit to get used too, i prefer fighting my own dyslexia and fat fingers thumps over fighting autocorrect.
a self-modified quertz layout, yes. I type in english and german. This layout is better suited to writing german, but works well enough with english (for me).
Yes. All three are in a lot of these stock pictures, which are often variations on a theme or on each other.
Someone once took a lot of them and made a story out of it. The guy ends up dead and the two women end up married, IIRC.
FWIW, every time I’ve seen the most common meme where she’s getting jealous of the guy looking at the other woman my first immediate thought is “…but the brunette’s much hotter!” Maybe it’s just me.
I saw this recently and all of my frustrations with the keyboard were suddenly justified. I knew it was getting measurably worse over time, but then someone went and measured it: https://youtu.be/hksVvXONrIo

I've been wondering if Google fucked something with Gboard recently. The autocorrections have been abysmal. Like 'dust' becoming 'dustDust'.
I wouldn't be surprised if they've intentionally regressed it to pave the way for some "AI-enhanced" bullshit that's just the original stuff.

My brother in Christ, autocorrect & glide typing was AI-driven before all the genAI/LLM hype.

Tbh more chances they just started vibecoding and broke some legacy shit nobody knew how it functions and why it's there.
jaybone@lemmy.zip · 21 pts · 311d
Or they are already doing the AI bullshit, which is why it sucks more than usual.

It has been autocorrecting valid words into other random words lately. It is incredibly frustrating. I know what I typed. Stop trying to change it.

Futo keyboard does it too, I think its an issue in android itself as a result, either that or they've similar implementations

I went to Gboard and cleared my cache/data (was like 1.4gb or some shit.). Curious to see how much different it is.
tja@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 311d
I mean they've already added AI functionality to gboard to eg make the text more or less formal or as more emojis.
I just tried it out and it deleted this text...

i don't think it's censorship so much as it is erring on the side of not inserting a fuck where it doesn't belong.

The way to fix this is to add shortcuts so all of your curse words are shortcuts to the curse word. So you put "shit" as the shortcut to "shit"
