Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to resign in January

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-resign-january-rcna245278

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., announced on Friday that she is resigning from her seat, following weeks of clashing with Donald Trump.

“If I am cast aside by MAGA Inc and replaced by Neocons, Big Pharma, Big Tech, Military Industrial War Complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class that can't even relate to real Americans, then many common Americans have been cast aside and replaced as well,” Greene said in a statement posted to social media.

When you suddenly realize how disposable you are to the cult if you dispute the word of their deity...

I’m sure it’s to go make more money being awful elsewhere.

You thinking Fox or our America news?

danc4498@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 271d (1 reply)

I was thinking consultant for some shit corporation that she helped give tax breaks to while in office.

anomnom@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 270d

Yeah, she has superpac evil energy is spades.

mirshafie@europe.pub · 6 pts · 271d

She'll just go independent on YouTube trying to ride the same wave Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens are cruising.

WindyRebel@lemmy.world · 102 pts · 271d (9 replies)

The suddenness, her “excuse” about not being liked, and feuding with Trump?

I dunno. I smell one of two scenarios:

  1. She was in it for the grift and can’t go any further for the work it takes.
  2. Her life is being threatened.

Edit: if someone was in her position and TRULY cared about the American people, she would fight for them and against Trump’s team. That’s why I think choice 2 is what is really happening.

WindyRebel@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 271d

Yes, exactly. The whole spending more time with family line seems like she’s trying to hint at this.

robocall@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 271d (1 reply)

She could be running for president, or getting a job as a pundit somewhere.

Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 271d

We're still 3 years out from a presidential election. Her current position goes through the end of next year. Leaving a public position in the middle of a term this far out is not a helpful move for a presidential run. She had wanted to run for Senate, but PEDOnald said no

Triumph@fedia.io · 21 pts · 271d

Por que no los dos

FuglyDuck@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 271d

it could be both, really.

That she's in it for the grift AND is being threatened.

Dragomus@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 271d

I have the impression she either realized or was told/shown how the Trump admin plans to stay in power forever, plus all the economic lies, and this disheartened her to a great extent.

On top of that the pushback from trump, and most likely her receiving covert threats to stay out of the way, is what also made her come to this decision.

I am curious if her stepping down will stick in the long run.

neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 271d (1 reply)

It's number 1.

She's ridden the ride long enough to do speaking engagements and political commentary for as long as she can remain entertaining. Also book deals, but that depends if she can scare up a ghostwriter who's willing to attach their name to her.

Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 271d

The whole point of ghost writing is the don't need to have the name attached lol

robocall@lemmy.world · 65 pts · 271d (6 replies)

There's more to this story. There is some information we don't know about yet.

spongebue@lemmy.world · 46 pts · 271d (3 replies)

Or she's going to try to run for Senate and wants to lie low for a bit to cool down emotions

Gates9@sh.itjust.works · 27 pts · 271d (2 replies)

She’s definitely angling for something bigger, maybe president.

mojofrododojo@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 271d

maybe president.

jesus h that would be a bad timeline

Wait til she realizes MAGA was always a grift by elites to get votes and support and they never cared for the "Real Americans™."

Redditsux@lemmy.world · 34 pts · 271d (3 replies)

LOL I think this is MTG playing the game like Trump - this is a tantrum, a threat, like a girlfriend who threatens to break up with you. It gets your attention - that is the true objective of this. She ain't done with politics. She's making a move here.

krooklochurm@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 271d (2 replies)

She's got that BPD cunning, like a ferret or a raccoon. Dumb as a bag of hammers but with an innate knack for manipulation and scheming nature, willing to shred or set fire to anything in her path to get whatever shiny trinket she wants.

Xero@infosec.pub · 7 pts · 271d (1 reply)

What does 'BPD cunning' mean? Are you referring to bipolar disorder?

krooklochurm@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 271d

How are the chances that Trump pissed off enough people in Georgia that a Democrat could take over?

frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 18 pts · 271d (2 replies)

Georgia's 14th district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index is R+19. That means that if the Republican candidate for President gets 45% nationwide, then the vote is expected to be 64% in that district.

Normally, an R+19 district would be untouchable for Democrats. Probably wouldn't even run a candidate, and if they do, it'd be a strategic move to force the GOP to spend money on what should be a gimme. I met a woman once who ran in a race like that, and it ain't a fun job.

That said, Democrats overperformed in the recent elections to close to that number, so it's not out of reach.

ayyy@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 270d (1 reply)

And then the democrats lost every single shred of support by caving on the shutdown.

turdcollector69@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 270d

And here we have the bitter core of American politics. We have a party that's overtly pro-ghoul and a party that pretends that be anti-ghoul until it's time to act meaningfully.

ohulancutash@feddit.uk · 15 pts · 271d (3 replies)

A bit of a performative flounce this. If resigning, resign. Instead she gets to play the martyr role just in time for the religious season.

Yeah, this smells

andros_rex@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 271d (1 reply)

From elsewhere, I’ve heard she’ll be fully vested in congressional retirement at the exact date she’s resigning.

Asidonhopo@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 271d

2 days before her resignation date she becomes eligible.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Hits Out at Net Worth Claims: ‘Go to Hell’

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, pushed back on Sunday against a report that said her personal wealth has skyrocketed since she entered Congress, calling the claims "outright slander and lies."

In an X post, the congresswoman owed her wealth to her family's construction business and private investment, and said her net worth today, valued at $22.51 million per public records, has nothing to do with her government role since 2021, which comes with a salary of $174,000.

She was responding to an article by financial news outlet Benzinga published on June 8, titled: "Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's Net Worth Jumped $21 Million Since Joining Congress—Top 6 Stocks She Was Buying Amid Tariff Chaos."

I feel like this is more a subset of the party is asking for her to back out so people will forget hating her as they plan on trying to pass her as Diet Trump, to republican voters as a backup plan in 2029.

MagicShel@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 271d

Trump called her big donors and told them to cut her off. They told her she was out. She resigned rather than lose.

leadore@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 271d

One thing I know by now, no one in power in the House or Senate (or SCOTUS, etc) ever willingly relinquishes that power, only leaves by death or threat of death -- there are very very few cases for other reasons and those only by people who have the ability to overcome their ego and see it as the right thing to do, which is not the case here.

A lot of the old-school repubs who were driven out when MAGA took over the GOP, pretended like they chose to not run again for various reasons, but some of them later revealed they feared for their lives. This regime doesn't fuck around, cross the Don(ald) and you're out, try to defy that order and you're told what will happen to you and/or your family if you do.
