ChicoSuave@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 255d (1 reply)

He's ordered a fully equipped makeup studio installed in the Pentagon. If a dressing room is not the sign of an entertainer, what is?

I remember back when I was young, there was one of them country guys who did stand up, and he always had either scotch or whiskey during his routines. He belonged to the you might be a redneck...group.

Ron white. Huh I thought he was dead.

Ron White. The only funny one in blue collar comedy

burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 255d (1 reply)

I don't know. I may not have liked all of the stuff he did, but the larry the cable guy bit had some good ones, and foxworthy's bit about drug side effects was well done.

LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 254d

Larry and Foxworthy had a couple good bits but that was about it for me. I found White at least was consistently funny.

My high school music teacher went to a Dragonforce concert circa 2008. He said they were completely wasted, didn’t sound anything like the album, and barely knew where they were. Just an absolute waste of time. He got an autograph from one of them (must’ve paid for a VIP ticket or something) and they wrote “wish I didn’t have to meet you, asshole.”

He liked them a lot less after that

shalafi@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 255d (4 replies)

Guns and Roses pulled that shit on me on '91. Couldn't even tell what song Axle was on he was so fucking wasted. And the acoustics were awful.

We were tripping acid and got turned around on the road trip to OKC, missed some opening band called Smashing Pumpkins.

mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 253d (2 replies)

For what it’s worth, Axl Rose is basically the poster child for diva musicians. There are entire AV companies that specifically refuse to work with GnR because Axl is such a renowned asshole in the music industry. Basically every person who has met him for longer than 15 seconds has some sort of horror story. He’s basically the reason the “musician trashes hotel room” stereotype exists. He has like 30 or 40 arrests on record, largely for asshole behavior like drunkenly grabbing women in public, throwing things at people, etc… But the record label treats him like a golden child because the band still draws crowds.

Source: I work in the music industry.

Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 253d

Axl Rose is...the reason the “musician trashes hotel room” stereotype exists.

Heh. Sweet summer child.

Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones, Keith Moon and the Who, and Led Zeppelin would all like a word.

CaptainBlinky@lemmy.myserv.one · 2 pts · 253d

He’s basically the reason the “musician trashes hotel room” stereotype exists.

OK that's just bullshit. Bands have been trashing hotel rooms since the 70's. The Who were the most famous for this.

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 253d

I went in 2007 and they sounded exactly like their album, they out on an incredibly show, and I got high-fives from a couple of them as they were running through the crowd. I’m sorry his experience wasn’t good, but I can provide another perspective. My friends and I all had a wonderful time.

Semester3383@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 255d (1 reply)

Thing is, he might be a mostly-functional alcoholic, but he pulls it off. Is he drunk during his routine? Maybe, probably. But goddamn, is he on point the whole show. I've had the chance to see him a few times, and would absolutely do it again if he ever came anywhere within a four hour drive of me.

TwoBeeSan@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 254d

Will always remember him talking about it with phony aa boy jim Norton. On jim quitting drinking at 18 Doug said "oh so you didn't even flesh it out"

Never seen any of his routines ever be messy. Absolute functional.

Joe Cocker is famous for being pretty fucked up almost all the time. I watched a documentary, going to a concert of his was like maybe he'll be able to do more than one song.

Random quote from the interwebz

I saw JC twice during the 70s & 1 of those performances Cocker was sooo fn drunk he went behind the drummer & puked, then passed out!

I'm an 80's boy, and a documentary was made about my rock stars and their drinking habits (among other things).

The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years

As an extra aside, I can't imagine that Lemmy spent any day sober since leaving Hawkwind until the day he died. When he was told he was sick and needed to stop drinking, he gave up whiskey and started drinking a case or more of wine every day. God, I miss Lemmy. 😁

Alestorm. They play pirate drinking metal, so it's pretty on brand

SchwertImStein@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 6 pts · 255d (2 replies)

I'm pretty sure they are not drunk during shows. IIRC they got rid of one guy who couldn't hold his drink.

fistac0rpse@fedia.io · 1 pts · 254d (1 reply)

I've seen them live a few times, and the singer at least was hammered every time. This was 10+ years ago though, so they might have calmed down a bit since then

SchwertImStein@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 254d

I see them every year and have talked with them 5+ times, while they are totally hammered at meet and greets and get drunk with fans after the show they seem sober enough before starting to drink.

EponymousBosh@awful.systems · 13 pts · 254d (3 replies)

He got sober in the 90s, but Elton John was notorious for using shit-tons of cocaine back in the day and was an alcoholic as well.

Bizzy Bone from Bone-Thugs-n-Harmony. Dude was a serious alcoholic. Saw his show back in like 2012 or 13, I forget the exact date, and he was completely shitfaced. He carried a handle of vodka and a bucket up onto the stage with him and alternated between drinking straight out of the bottle and then coughing/spitting/possibly puking into the bucket between songs. People in the crowd were like wtf man. It was disgusting. He had a fucked up childhood, so I'm not surprised he hit the bottle hard, but damn.

Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 255d (1 reply)

Dylan Moran, maybe not drunk necessarily but he is always drinking wine on the stage during his sets from memory.

fistac0rpse@fedia.io · 5 pts · 255d

Moran quit smoking in 2014 and became teetotal in 2018, but has since resumed drinking.

As a kid I didn't get the drunk Dean Martin jokes on Bugs Bunny. Watching him on old roast videos, yeah, he was fucking hammered 24/7.

Go check some Don Rickels roasts! The man was fucking brutal, thought Sinatra was going to cap his ass on the spot when Don joked about Frank's mob ties. Kissing Sammy Davis Jr., "Did I get any black on me?"

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 255d (3 replies)

Dean Martin was faking it. He barely drank, and was not a partier. It was all an act.

Krudler@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 254d

I remember an interview, where he broke kayfabe and hinted to the interviewer something to the effect of "do you think I could be as successful as I am if I drank that heavily?"

shalafi@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 254d (1 reply)

No way! And all these years later I learn this.

Krudler@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 252d

When you think about it, that just demonstrates such a true mastery of the craft, and a commitment to protecting his business.

I too, was convinced for decades that he was a massive booze bag! It was my father that dispelled my illusion, when he told me that the man was actually a teetotaler!

Man, I so very much wish I could locate that interview again, because I specifically remember researching it and laughing so hard. I got fooled, but I did appreciate it!

Eddie Vedder drinks his share of wine on stage but I'm not sure if he's shitfaced. I think it would be hard to tell given his style of singing(i very much like his singing, not bashing him).

Didn't know about that but checks out with those early albums that's for sure.

Why is that something enjoyable as a show? Sounds awful to me.

SlamWich@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 254d (1 reply)

It was still solid musically, just had more edge and agony to it. Matched the tone of the music. Now the show is just so sterile and spot on. I guess as a degenerate, it was nice to see them rage a bit

I saw Shane MacGowan (and the Popes) at some festival or other. The dude was clearly shit-faced, hardly able to stand, and slurring like crazy as he babbled at the crowd. But, once the music kicked in, he sang like he always sings. I guess that probably means he's always shit-faced.
