Disney deleted a Thread because people kept putting anti-fascist quotes from its movies in the replies

https://www.theverge.com/news/863980/disney-deleted-anti-fascist-thread

”Share a Disney quote that sums up how you’re feeling right now!”

That’s what Disney posted on Threads the other day, and people immediately replied with lines from Star Wars, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and even Mary Poppins. The throughline between all the quotes: they were pretty pointedly anti-fascist and clearly aimed at the current administration

Disney are also really shitty at removing any context in their movies. An interesting scene at the beginning of the movie Encanto a flashback references an unknown conflict in Colombia resulting in the death of the grandmother’s husband. What conflict Disney? Who were the bad guys Disney? Further research by an interested viewer will reveal that it was a civil war involving a right wing of rebels backed by the US, rose up against a leftist government.

FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 27 pts · 222d (2 replies)

Encanto isn’t about the conflict, though.

It would seriously break the flow of the story if they took time to explain the geopolitics of the area.

sukhmel@programming.dev · 16 pts · 222d (1 reply)

The original comment reads more like: they could've used an abstract conflict without specifics allowing to identify it

I would add: maybe that was intentional, also maybe they thought that the US were on the side of good in that case

FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -3 pts · 222d

It’s war, there is no side of good.

Ironic for a company that recently made Andor.

You might have already heard its praise, but I wanted to add that it’s not just a political thriller, it’s about fascism. More specifically, it’s about the dilemma of doing nothing and pretending everything is fine or doing something even if it means using the tools of your enemy.

Senator Mothma’s speech at the end was creepily relevant, you just need to replace palpatine for another name.

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 44 pts · 222d (7 replies)

Isn't all of Star Wars about fascism?

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 28 pts · 222d (2 replies)

The rest is pretty cartoonish Bad Guys Bad, Good Guys Good.

Andor was way more nouanced.

Further Andor showed the machinery of Fascism from the inside and had various different kinds of people with different levels of commitement and reasons for participating in it.

You could really feel the machinery of Fascism slowly closing its maw on people who were just pro-Obbey-The-Rules rather than pro-Fascism and either coopted them or crushed them. Meanwhile in the rest of Star Wars the Empire was pretty much just is Big Powerful Evil For The Sake Of Evil Guys + Mindless obedient human puppets.

For the Empire side Andor showed people under Fascism, the rest Star Wars just shows the symbology of Fascism (down to the detail that all the members of the Empire are human, never other species) but not the human side of it or the machinery influencing and even forcing them to behave as they do.

7101334@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 222d (1 reply)

If you think Star Wars does it bad - which I'm not entirely disagreeing with you on - dear god never watch Rebel Moon

Single worst piece of scifi I've ever seen in my life, and I've seen so much scifi. I watched all of Dark Matter for some reason, and Rebel Moon is so much worse. Why did they give the Big Evil Fascist a Fascist Shillelagh? I don't fuckin know man it's the worst movie ever.

Slow. Motion. Corn. Harvest

saimen@feddit.org · 15 pts · 222d (2 replies)

Andor is much more about anti-fascism than other Star Wars pieces. But in a more adult and realistic way. That one has to get their hands dirty and give up some ideals.

On the other hand it shows good people meaning good things are still doing bad things simply because they are part of a fascist regime of which they might not even be aware of (because fascism is about manipulation and propaganda).

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · -2 pts · 221d (1 reply)

Yeah I'm not into that kind of thing. Rogue One was weird enough trying to be Saving Private Ryan while having the toys I played with as a kid on the screen. And I find it kinda find it boring when shows spell out what they're about instead of having a deep subtext so I tend just get annoyed by plot holes since there's nothing else to think about.

Ashtear@piefed.social · 4 pts · 221d

Andor isn't nearly that straightforward about it. It's complicated and messy, with self-interested people juxtaposed against the idealists. Most of it is character-centered, soul-sucking spycraft tension like The Lives of Others or Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, but then also exasperating bureaucracy as in Chernobyl--and Stellan Skarsgard is equally phenomenal in Andor. Your toys aren't here either; no lightsabers, few scenes with the old droids, very little time in space. Most of the time you need the architecture and the stormtroopers and Imperial dress whites to recognize it as a Star Wars setting.

It's completely different than any Star Wars screen production before it.

angrystego@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 222d

To add to what Aceticon said, Andor also shows the random evil of fascism, where people who just want to live their life and have no motivation to rebel are easily sucked into the insanity and given no chance to live their lives under the radar.

bytesonbike@discuss.online · 7 pts · 222d (1 reply)

Watching Succession (which is based on the lives of media families like the Murdochs, the Redstones, the Maxwells, and the Sulzbergers) made me realize how little they care about the message their entertainment wing gives.

They will play both sides if it pays off. They don't care.

Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 222d

I agree. That show was a very good insight into rich people and their mentality.

Even though it was hard to watch at times, it was worth the watch cause of the insight.

They truly live in their own bubble that ensures only like minded people stay there

::: spoiler Tap for spoiler In fact the whole point of the show was how ruthless Logan was and that his children were stuck between a rock and a hard place. They could never leave that life cause they are so used to the luxury, although Connor gave a decent try.

They could also never be as ruthless since they had a decent amount of humanity left.

So even with all their money and luxury, they ended up feeling very unfulfilled and like a failure. :::

mad_djinn@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 222d (2 replies)

Andor was a pacification tool meant to supplicate the weak liberals who refuse to actually, I don't know, DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE CURRENT REAL LIFE SITUATION. You too can resist, by watching Andor from your couch! Thinking is just as good as doing!

GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 222d

I saw Andor as a blaring, screaming, raging wakeup-call for anyone who thinks that sitting and thinking about doing something is the same as doing something.

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 221d

Ok now apply the same kind of criticism to the anti-liberal memes you're consuming on the internet. Who do those benefit? Who benefits from dividing people?

Where does this stuff originate from? Some millionaire trust fund baby influencers on youtube or twitch? Why is this Hasan guy on the front page of a website owned by Jeff Bezos?

Keep on repeating the bullshit that Jeff Bezos wants you to about liberals being the real enemy. You're soooo much smarter than everyone else LOL. You're really "fighting the power" when you consume the content the billionaires want you to consume.

[With the help of an LLM] Here's a few worthy quotes:

[Edit: Thanks Susaga for pointing out the LLM lied. Hah. LLMs. Can't trust 'em. Good lines, pity they're not true quotes.]

"To be my own master. Such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in all the world." — Genie, Aladdin (1992)

"You think you’re so clever, but you’re just a cowardly, backstabbing, murderous lizard!" — Simba, The Lion King (1994)

"A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart." — Zeus, Hercules (1997)

"I won’t be a pawn in someone else’s game!" — Pinocchio, Pinocchio (1940)

"You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." — Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh (1966–1977)

"I’d rather die tomorrow than live a hundred years without knowing freedom." — John Smith, Pocahontas (1995)

"You can’t own a human being!" — Dr. David Q. Dawson, The Aristocats (1970)

Susaga@sh.itjust.works · 62 pts · 223d (1 reply)

The LLM lied. Those aren't quotes from Lion King, Pinocchio, Pocahontas, Aristocats, or Winnie the Pooh. (Christopher Robin did say that, but not in that specific movie. And it's not particularly antifa either)

Also, Dr Dawson isn't from the Aristocats. He's from Great Mouse Detective, and didn't say the line there either.
